We know what went wrong. The question is what the 5th one can do to avoid being shit (besides being cancelled)?

Make an excuse to bring Woody back to Buzz and make it a buddy movie with Buzz and Woody as deuteragonists.

Supposedly Lasseter and Iger's relationship had completely fallen apart over the course of 2010 to 2017 because Iger was blown away by Toy Story 3's success and he kept insisting on Pixar make more sequels. Lasseter shut down Disney's direct-to-video empire that was so prominent from 1994-2007 because he felt that the sequels were making Disney look greedy. While there was enthusiasm for some projects like Finding Dory, Pixar really didn't want to do Toy Story 4 and Brad Bird was more or less forced to do Incredibles 2, which is why that movie was a rehash of the first.

Things finally came to a head with the release of Coco, which infamously had a Frozen tv special screened before it. It's rumored that the reason for it was because Iger didn't think a movie about Mexicans would make much money and used the Frozen special to lure people in. Lasseter was supposedly furious told Iger off, saying he was getting worse than Eisner, so Iger took advantage of the MeToo movement as an excuse to get rid of Lasseter, using Rashida Jones as an accomplice because she was bitter that Lasseter and Pixar didn't like her ideas for Toy Story 4. It's pretty telling that a lot of Disney's big directors/writers/producers (Rich Moore, Chris Williams, Darla K. Anderson, Lee Unkrich, Jim Reardon) left afterwards because they knew it was bullshit and didn't want to put up with Iger or his minions anymore, those who stayed were simply loyal to the Pixar brand name.

Oh, Is that the reason why all of the new sequels are feature animations instead?

Those more or less only got made because of Iger's greed.

I liked Woody's world weariness, Forky, and Gabby Gabby.
The problem I had was Bo Peep. It's fine to bring her back, but I just didn't like how she took over the movie and took screentime away from the more interesting parts of the movie. Also Buzz did frick-all, he had like a 10 second character arc. They have not known what to do with Buzz since the first movie, he's all over the place. Tim Allen was also clearly phoning it in for 4.
Anyways, 1 is still the best one and probably always will be. The sequels just don't hit the same, they're too sanitized.

Third one ended perfectly, to the point where they had to undermine the ending of it to make 4 even happen.

They didn't call it 'Toy 4ry'.

I'm also not expecting them to name the 5th one 'Toy 5tory', either.

The entire conceptualization of this absolute farce. 3 was a great final sendoff and yet they couldn't compel their greedy antics. Unfortunately, the train doesn't seem like it's going to stop anytime soon.

They made a sequel, then another one, then another one.
    The original creators left.
    Indians are now in charge.
It was a boy's franchise for selling toys to boys now turned into a stronk womyn franchise where the plot doesn't make sense, the male characters all serve the female characters, the female characters can't do anything wrong even when they're the villain, and the male characters are all pathetic, girly or both.

It was fundamentally pointless. No matter how good it looked or funny it could be the whole exercise was the same rubbish they pulled during the direct to video sequel era; “They lived happily ever after… until now”.

Then there’s the general sentiment of Woody leaving his child which pissed people off. I’m a little more on the fence about it but it didn’t exactly strike me as the sort of thing he would do.
