Transformers/GI JOE: Energon Universe

You guys enjoying the reboot/crossover comics? I'm really liking the world they're establishing with both. Do you think any of the Transformers character deaths will stick? JOES/COBRA characters you're anticipating? Thoughts on Void Rivals?

        >Which by the way, how the frick is GI JOE struggling to make a decent movie? All the material is there.
They're not spending tentpole blockbuster money on making GI Joe movies, so they're not making tentpole blockbuster money from them either. The first one was an adequately-performing lower-budget action movie, the second one made more money on a lower budget, but since then GI Joe movies have been insanely mismanaged. They delayed making a third movie for years because they wanted to use it as a launchpad for a Hasbro Cinematic Universe instead of just doing GI Joe 3. By the time they finally dropped that plan it was more than six years since Retaliation, so they just rebooted, and released the Snake Eyes movie during Covid lockdowns, sending it out to die. Then Transformers Rise of the Beasts ended on a GI Joe teaser that contained zero recognizable elements or characters of GI Joe, just the name being dropped. They just have no idea what they're doing.

I found the second movie better but incredibly frustrating. You finally get a decent Cobra Commander, yet axe Baroness and Destro? Zartan is just in disguise the whole time? Frick that

            Anonymous

"Destro, you're out of the band" was a cool line, but writing him out like that was one of the sequel's mistakes. Zartan staying in his disguise was at least for plot reasons, but they should've had him revert to his true form for the fight at the end. But after the first movie, I'm not sure how they'd even bring back the Baroness and make her part of Cobra.

They should have just rebooted and moved on. For some reason the films can't seem to find the right balance of absurd and edgy. CGI wasn't great either

Baroness was fricked over by the first movie making her Duke's brainwashed ex. I agree about Destro though.

It's so long since I've seen Rise of Cobra I didn't even notice the resemblance, and let's keep in mind that those things were very controversial and unpopular with the GI Joe fanbase, not really something that would be anyone's "first thing you think of when you think of GI Joe", and not something they'd be able to make more of without a lot of dead Transformers.

But I was talking about the secret base scene at the end of the movie. That scene introduces GI Joe into the Transformers movie universe, but does it without showing us any recognizable GI Joe characters or vehicles that would get people hyped, it's just a name drop and a logo.

Seems like a hassle since Rise of the Beasts is set in the 90s. Also might be doing another reboot because of Snake Eye's poor sales.

These comics provide a good template for a shared universe but given the track record of the producers of these movies it will be a half-assed attempt to combine the two properties.

The tacked on ending of Rise of the Beasts was laughably bad, probably the lamest way you could set it up and makes sense that they added it just weeks before release.

They already attempted a Joes reboot with Snake Eyes and it fell flat, so not sure what they think will happen here.

I do wonder if it was some existing ninja movie script that got GI Joe characters grafted onto it, that would explain a lot.

Movie Bumblebee was probably just a cute gimmick that Hasbro kept going back to because it seemed to work.
With Snake Eyes, I assume it went something like 'Snake Eyes is known for being mute, so an origin movie about him has to explain why he's mute'.

            >Snake Eyes is known for being mute, so an origin movie about him has to explain why he's mute
....only they never actually get to that point in the origin story.

It sucks dude. The Entire movie is Snake Eyes betraying the people who took him in and getting rewarded for it while Storm Shadow is basically excommunicated from the Arashikage because of one mistake that wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Snake Eyes betraying everyone in the first place

              >wonder if it was some existing ninja movie script that got GI Joe characters grafted onto it

Very possible Id say. Most of the GI Joe elements (namely the inclusion of Scarlet and Baroness) could easily be removed. The rest of the movie is not really accurate to Snake Eye's story/origin so it really could be its on thing.

Really? Never watched Snake Eyes, seems like a waste not to do it.

Yup. At the end, like very last shot, he gets his costume but is still not mute. And even tho it was billed as 'GI Joe Origins' the Joes/Cobra stuff factor very little into the plot

Given the nature of Cybertronian biology and the tech/mystical stuff at their disposal, I'm not counting any of the deaths being permanent. Energon is a hell of a power source that can bring back bots from extreme circumstances, and even if their spark is extinguished, for all we know theyll bring them all back with Vector Sigma

        >Given the nature of Cybertronian biology and the tech/mystical stuff at their disposal, I'm not counting any of the deaths being permanent.
It looked like they were teasing Jetfire coming back already, and Bumblebee is probably just a matter of time, even if it takes a later change of writer before it happens, though they may rebuild him as Goldbug. The most recent issue killed off a lot of popular Autobots as soon as they were introduced, so hopefully we are getting them back eventually.

Reflector might be a different case just because of how little is left of him, while the last issue made a point of telling us only part of Skywarp's brain is left, and it's broken. He really would need a magic plot device to bring him back.

Well like I said, Vector Sigma. Energon is the lifeblood of Primus, and the spark itself is mystical. Would really sell the endless stalemate war if they've established a means to keep bringing back bots.

          Anonymous

With Reflector the issue is really what a wasted opportunity this was. He's one of the few really early G1 characters who's still largely a blank slate, in the cartoon his powers and his having three bodies was all vague and undefined. This could have been his chance to shine but instead he got killed immediately. As fun as the comic is, and as much of a "safe" kill as he is because he doesn't have many fans, this just seems like a waste.

From memory: Bumblebee, Kup, Warpath, Jetfire, Beachcomber, Huffer and Reflector got killed. We don't actually know if Ultra Magnus can be repaired.

We're told Ultra Magnus is dead, and we're led to believe the dead body we saw was him. I just hope they don't copy IDW1 and have someone else impersonating him again.

The writer isn't interested in exploring blank slates. Few writers are in favor of working with ones they like. If one seems to happen, it likely is a result of either the character they wanted to use originally being unavailable or having a concept first and sticking an identity to it.

The two standout examples are Swerve (originally planned to be Bluestreak, and adapted his personality to being Bluestreak-like) and Tailgate (Nothing is informed from Tailgate's original characterization. Works from being an ancient guy who missed his original job and works as an audience surrogate). You could probably claim Whirl as an example of rando being intentional at least.

The only times Bumblebee was mute outside of the movies was in Prime, seasons 1-3 of Rescue Bots, and season 1 of Cyberverse. And for that season of Cyberverse, he was only mute in the real world, he talked normally while mind linked with Windblade.

It's my first time really reading any comics of either and I'm having a blast.
While TF has already blown up a few characters that I like, but I'm mostly just happy that I don't actively dislike any of the main cast. The Autobots are all good, the Decepticons are all evil, but there's still enough variation in their personalities without having to turn any of them into something insufferable.
As far as Joes go, I mostly liked the funnier ones form the 80's cartoon, so I'm not sure how I'll feel if/when guys like Shipwreck or Quick Kick make it into the book. I may be alone on this one, but I'd like to see the rivalry between Storm Shadow and Spirit from the old show rather than the usual thing with Snake Eyes.
I'm still liking Void Rivals, but it really needs to pick up the pace ASAP. I don't know if it's because they need the other comics to catch up before it can go farther plot-wise, but it needs to do something or it may end up being one of those books that I only occasionally skim online just to see if anything important to the other books happened.

We know Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are on their way, it sounds like they're probably getting introduced in the Scarlett mini, but I think a new GI Joe continuity needs to walk the line between keeping them recognizable as the characters people know, while also doing something new and interesting with them so it's not just a retread of the things Hama's already done with them in his book. Working in Storm Shadow's Sunbow cartoon feuds with Spirit and Quick Kick could be a start, at least.

Post and mark spoilers. I'll read what you have to say, and the validity is up to opinion

He's got a ways to go before he can really do anything about it, but the character in the book doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would just throw up his hands after what Bat Boy told him. He may still tell others and himself that he's still loyal and devoted to his original cause, but it would just be classic bad guy self-gaslighting.

Personal opinion, but I think Cobra Commander will realize that with Gobulus in power he can never return home. So the answer is to not only beat him to the arms race, but to return home victorious after conquering the surface world. Or maybe Megatron wipes out Cobra-La upon escape, and Commander decides to make a new race of snake people via science after conquering the planet

Let's just say that Jetfire's suffering is only beginning. As for your theory, Megatron gets FRICKED UP in his escape. He gets his other arm back, but trades his good eye for it. Also a good character moment showing his sense of honor.
On the Joe side, Baroness is part of the team.

How the hell does that work considering Prime has it, and they have yet to meet. That wouldn't happen in FCBD issue
          > Baroness is part of the team.
You got that from the last issue of Duke, and we know its temporary

Wasn't he missing both arms back in Cobra Commander 1? When I said "other" I was talking about the one without the gun. I guess Cobra-la removed it sometime between.
            >You got that from the last issue of Duke, and we know its temporary
She's working with him now but will leave before Duke starts forming the Joes. When he does he tracks her down to recruit her. Also the boss guy Duke works for whose name I forget is secretly forming a second team that seems a bit more black-ops.

I feel like the reason Void Rivals has been so dull is because this is Kirkman's first time playing in a shared universe sandbox again since Marvel and his writing style having become so decompressed while having to compete with DWJ and Williamson who both have a lot more experience in writing in shared universes and because they're writing GI Joe and Transformers while he's doing a weird OC comic that is mostly there be a framework for the universe

The Transformers book is probably my favorite Transformers comic of them all so far. A lot of it is familiar, but it's been near-perfectly handled. I'm not a huge fan of G.I. Joe so I've never really cared for the crossover stuff.
    >Do you think any of the Transformers character deaths will stick?
I hope most of them do. I expect Bumblebee to come back and it would perhaps be a shame for Ultra Magnus to be dead, but otherwise it's fine for characters to die. Transformers has a lot of characters.

COBRA was always cool, and I don’t care if it is a HYDRA knockoff. You got Cobra Commander, Destro, Baroness, and a dozen other lackeys part of a b***hing criminal empire

Cobra-La just has a hard time working in series that try to make G.I.Joe more of a serious millitary thing.
It works well enough in the bonkers world of Sunbow G.I.Joe.

Cobra and Hydra don't really have much in common beyond being evil organizations that want to rule the world. Cobra's group of high command characters and their internal rivalries is a big distinct difference from Hydra usually having just one leader. And neither of them are all-caps, Cobra and Hydra are not acronyms.

Unlike most series, GI Joe's comics were the more popular arm of the mixed media.

The cartoon was seen by a much wider audience, but the hardcore fanbase that's kept GI Joe on life support through the years has indeed been predominantly fans of the original comic.

is right that Cobra-La isn't really that weird by the standards of the Sunbow cartoon, but it wouldn't have fit into the comic at all.

        >COBRA itself thematically is a perverse twist on the American dream
That's specifically what Larry Hama was going for in the comics, but it's not really universal across all iterations of GI Joe. A lot of the time they have no real defined ideology at all beyond wanting to rule the world, and intentionally so by the writers, so nobody can accuse them of representing any IRL individuals or groups.

Joe is a bit generic so far but a decent action comic, could get even cooler (or boring) in the future, too early to tell (barely know anything about GI Joe).
Void Rivals has flat characters and suffers from the forced in TF subplots, but I like the setting and I am intrigued by the political conspiracies since I dig that shit.
Cobra feels moronic to me and I cannot take it seriously so I ignore it for now.
TF is the best series so far. Great action and one of the best Optimuses. I have yet to see decent dynamics between any of the characters and robot side characters are basically cardboard cut-outs so far. Can't judge the lore yet.

    >Do you think any of the Transformers character deaths will stick?
Surely and sadly the tertiary deaths like Reflector and Warpath. Hope that Bee's death will have consequences at least (like Bee only returning as altered self or Goldbug) and hope that Magnus isn't dead, that would be huge blunder so early on.

You ever think about how if not for the 2007 movie every Bumblebee appearance from Animated onwards might have used Hot Shot instead? Or that Red Alert would be the default Autobot medic instead of Ratchet?

      Anonymous

Not really. Animated used Bumblebee and Ratchet because DJ Wyatt wanted to use those instead of Hot Shot and Red Alert for the "kid" and "medic" roles. Just made it easier so they wouldn't end up being called Autobot Bumblebee or Autobot Ratchet on the boxes.

        >Animated used Bumblebee and Ratchet because DJ Wyatt wanted to use those instead of Hot Shot and Red Alert for the "kid" and "medic" roles.
Wyatt did that because Hasbro asked them to use them, the original plan was Hot Shot. But Wyatt preferred Bumblebee and Ratchet anyway so he didn't mind.

2007 in general brought back the idea of the core G1 cast for new series. The UT/Aaron Archer era wasn't really set on keeping the G1 names on similar archetypes. We got lots of Prowls and Ironhides
they had also just about given up on "Jazz" and "Ratchet" as names/characters because they were harder to trademark. The movie using them sort of forced them to

Outside of Prime (where he was swapped out for Bulkhead due to DotM), I think Ironhide just got hurt by the fact that he and Ratchet share body designs and every writer just seems to like Ratchet more.

You know what drives me nuts? Why aren't Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow's names inversed? You would think the guy with "snake" in his name would belong to COBRA

      Anonymous

Going by the real life origins of how 80s Joe came about, it's possible Snake Eyes had his name before Cobra was developed as a villain faction, it was in a Hasbro/Marvel meeting for the comic that the idea of even having a villain faction first came up.

Snake Eyes' first figure was a commando, with no mention of being a ninja, Storm Shadow wasn't inherently linked to him at all. Then the comic introduced the idea of Snake Eyes being a ninja who was in the same clan, and his second figure incorporated him being a ninja.
