The (first) editor was the one saving it until he went to prison for murdering his wife. I believe the author had the ending and various other plot points broadly envisioned from the start, but I think he didn't quite know how to get there. He supposedly mentioned wanting to draw the "rumbling" (major plot point in the final arc) since he was 19 or something.

Anon this was the explanation for Falco turning into a bird. Annie copied other powers by drinking their spinal fluid. Falco drank Zeke's spinal fluid so he was able to add beastlike features to the Jaw. If you look at the historical titans they were fighting in the final battle, many of them look completely different from the modern versions and there were even other animals like an okapi.

What Eren did is so moronic it's hard to explain.
He destroyed all leadership on the island, caused many deaths, put his entire society in chaos all for the illusion directed only at the viewer so they think ''wow, this guy means business.''
He then threw it all away, leaving his destroyed society to go take all the titans and kill precisely 80% of the world population. While he has the powers of a god and can literally just snap his fingers and kill everyone coming after him, he lets them cut off his head. So Mikasa makes out with his head and a little girl responsible for all the titans looks at it and slimes, and then BOOM, no more titans. Did Eren of course didn't intend for that to happen, his plan was to kill 80% of the world's population, for some reason. Then the rest of the world population that survives just kills everyone on the island.
Oh and also Eren goes back in time and kills his mother and mindrapes his dad showing him that he will destroy the world to his dad, and then mindraped him into giving the titan powers to him anyway. And to kill Eren one of the titans turned into a fricking titan bird. And when Eren died he turned into real bird for no reason.
Another huge thing I forgot. The afterlife is real in AoT and everyone who ever died turns into an actual force ghost like Star Wars. The dead just stand around and can project their image. Everything is kind of pointless because everyone who dies will live forever as a ghost.

I'm not sure. The way I see it there are two possibilities:
1. He knows he's about to use the nuclear option on the entire world and is trying to push Mikasa (and Armin) away so they don't get caught up in this. Especially because they wouldn't agree with this solution.
But the problem is at the end he actually wanted his friends to stop him, which brings us to the second possibility.
2. In order to eradicate titans from the world, Ymir needs to see that it is possible for her to defy King Fritz. This was accomplished in the end by Mikasa killing Eren. But if Eren were nice to Mikasa all the time this wouldn't prove anything to Ymir. He has to act like a jerk so Mikasa overcomes that, because Ymir's problem was continuing to be in love with Fritz no matter how terrible he was. Ever since he touched Historia's hand and saw those memories of the future, Eren had been doing fricked up shit Mikasa doesn't approve of, like killing children in Marley (pic related), but Mikasa continued to stick by him like Ymir did with Fritz. Telling her she's a slave and he hates her could be part of this. Even right up until the end Mikasa wanted to save Eren, so when she finally resolves to kill him it proves that Ymir could have done the same to Fritz even though she loved him.
I still think overall the ending robbed the character of agency because he's doing what he saw himself doing because he saw himself doing it... or something like that. But within the context of having seen the future his actions "seem" somewhat consistent.
it's just nonsensical, there's a big write up that suggests hackyama was flip flopping back and forth in the final arc presumably due to editor instructions. the part about mikasa not being able to hit eren is even contradicted in season 1.

We get multiple scenes where it's just you, the reader, and Eren's internal monologue and it's him thinking about killing all of the non-Eldians and why he has to do what he is going to do because le freedom man, which is fine, but then later it is revealed that this was all a lie. It is objectively bad writing to let only the reader in on something that is privately going on in a character's brain, only to turn around and say that was all a trick. It was okay a trick to the reader, it makes no sense for the plot. You can maybe get away with this one small time in a wacky fighting shounen or something like Dragon Ball as a gag, but not like this where it's a "mature" story and the entirety of its second half hinges on a guy autistically pushing himself to commit a genocide because it's the only way, but also it's a joke or something. Tranime has always been like this. It's common to blow the budget into the first episode. Japs and weebs usually get attached at the first episode and then stick through it defending every decision made.
The companies making anime don't even get paid a percentage of the profits. They get a flat fee and tight deadlines so they shit out something as soon as possible for as cheap as possible.
The first season of AoT was different because it was the thing they wanted to use to put their studio on the map. It had many talented animators spending months on specific scenes. As far as seasonal anime goes its quality was right there near the top, yet it was still plagued with issues, some bad looking scenes, fricked up faces in backgrounds. Some of the mistakes in production are still not fixed, like there is still a scene in season 1 where you hear this loud noise like something is falling and then two faces crash through a wall. Whoever added the sound effect didn't understand that those titans were not falling into the wall.
