I watched it but I couldn't tell you for the life of me what the plot was.

      Anonymous

I remember when they aired this on Disney XD around 2012, which shocked me because I had a single DVD of 3 episodes and that alone told me "this is some powerfully bad shit." I figured the only reason why it was being aired was because Sonic Generations was hot shit at the time, and it was Sonic singing in a band and DIsney was all about musical stuff back then, so it cheaper to just air this old series than to commission a new one (like Sonic Boom would end up being)

ANYWAY. So I'd catch some episode descriptions on my Dish Network channel guide, right? And I'd read them and go 'Holy shit, this show sounds mature as frick. Episodes about corrupt aristocrats, tax collectors, and wicked mystics in my Sonic cartoon? Hell yeah, I'm an edgyboi who didn't hate the Adventure or Storybook games, give me more of that."
Then I watched it and good fricking b***hshitc**t lord, it was SHOCKINGLY bad. I couldn't actually believe what I was seeing.
Not to mention that the writing was pigshit. It had all these "mature" themes that made even SatAM look like a kiddy show, but the writing itself was more juvenile than SatAM ever was. Embarrassingly bad on every conceivable level, and that was on second viewing once my eyes stopped boggling at the pisspoor animation.

I too couldn't tell you what the plot was because it wasn't anything. It was trying to create something deep and epic, and I respect Ben Hurst's passion for American Sonic, but he clearly was not given a fifth of the budget he needed or the best writers DiC had on hand.

      Mindbogglingly bad show.

        >'Holy shit, this show sounds mature as frick. Episodes about corrupt aristocrats, tax collectors, and wicked mystics in my Sonic cartoon? Hell yeah, I'm an edgyboi who didn't hate the Adventure or Storybook games, give me more of that."
That's what hurts. Sonic Underground could conceivably have been good or at least a hidden gem. Its artstyle was so bleak by Sonic standards (I don't even hesitate to say Shadow the Hedgehog in 2005 was as "gritty" as Sonic Underground felt) and the stories it tried to tell were definitely not what you'd expect from a kiddy show about Sonic. The execution definitely was gimped out the ass.
Imagine a Sonic show with an actual budget that tried Sonic Underground's shtick again (except without the shitty musical numbers). With a proper direction and an overarching narrative that builds itself up competent, you could have something really solid on your hands. It might make some Genesis purists angry for being "too dark," but frick it, I want to see Sonic Underground done right.

          Anonymous

          >genesis purists would complain it's "too dark"

what does it mean to be a genesis purist? i plays every sonic sega game except 3D blast and prefer SatAM because it was dark. also the concept of a polluter turning animals in to mindless slaves is already dark, so i don't get why someone would think sonic games didn't have conflict

            Anonymous

Genesis purist just means you want Sonic to only be the way he was on the Sega Genesis. Even that has several shades to it, because a lot of Genesis purists or Classicgays loved SatAM. But some of them are ultra-strict "Sonic 1, 2, 3, CD, Mania, and that's it."
Thanks to the "Dark Age" of Sonic in the 2000s, a lot of Genesis purists over romanticized the Genesis games because they were so light on story and relatively cheerful and colorful. Sonic Team took the wrong lesson from that and gave us all the games that felt like they belonged on Nick Jr (the "Baldy McNosehair" stuff), and that's also when the sentiment that Sonic should NEVER be serious or story-heavy because he's a taking rodent took off. Like some people buy into that so hard that they get legitimately angry when they discover that Sonic had longrunning comic series because they're ULTRA damn sure "Sonic doesn't need to be anything more than running fast to Genesis tunes" because Sonic 06 buckbroke the fandom that hard.
So yeah, a redone Sonic Underground (despite technically being Classic Sonic) would definitely get shit for being too dark just by way of having a story at all, let alone one that's fairly grim

          >except without the shitty musical numbers
Funny thing is, those music numbers are the only reason the show got made. They got the greenlight to make another show but had virtually no budget. They came up with the music thing as a plan for making money from the show to pay for it. Music numbers they could produce in house and charge royalties on.

You could ditch Underground and just mix SatAM and SatAM and it would be about two orphans on the run from a genocidal dictator while also fighting back against his empire.
Or it could just be like the early Archie comics.

they showed an ep of satam to a new group of writers and they plotted out their own thing based on what they saw. there was probably some lack of communication between those writers and the artists too, because how they chose to represent robotisization was very strange. like i don't think the sonic underground writing staff intended for them to just look like cyborgs, because the scripts don't refer to them as such.

Blame Ken Penders. Ben Hurst was going to pitch to Sega for a full blown movie to conclude SatAM, only for Ken to backstab him and make his own pitch to Sega which included a ridiculously awful looking PowerPoint presentation.

Sega went frick no, and didn’t want to hear it from Ben.

To this day, Ken still lies about what happens and still disrespects Ben even though the dude is dead now.

Nah, that was in 2003, years after Underground. Underground came about because Sega wanted a Sonic Adventure, but DiC threw together some random shit with some SATAM assets instead.

I feel like that is something I probably would have been addressed in the cartoon if it continued longer. He might have had some industrial nobility back at him in the early stages or he might have some lieutenants and certain places who are higher up doubles who got the other Nobles outside the story with the fox girl and her dad so it's not all of the doubles are better off working with him and the only other Noble we see for like more than what episode is sonic sisters arrange marriage husband(I am horrible with names)

            Not sure about Sega tears.
All I know about is how Penders royally fricked over Ben Hurst's efforts to make a Sonic SatAM movie by forcefully inserting himself into Ben's plans and then trying to stab him in the back by stealing his pitch opportunity at SEGA to demand they hire him (Penders) instead. Whatever he said to the SEGA execs pissed SEGA off so much they not only threw him out but cut off Ben Hurst as well by association thus destroying his efforts.

Or perhaps it served as an inspiration for the israeli people…?

    >join a stream Cinemaphile made that played every Sonic Underground episode
    >legitimately one of the most fetishistic shows I’ve ever seen
I’m still scarred by the sea sponge captain

It's funny, you watch the episode, Sonic Tonic, and not only does it have feet expansion due to a superspeed tonic the characters use, it has only Sleet and Dingo's feet bursting out of their shoes, while Sonia and Manic's shoes stay intact, showing that the writer is specifically into Sleet and Dingo's big feet

        >the writer is specifically into Sleet and Dingo's big feet
        I'm telling you man

        >Dingo, aside from being the obligatory dumb muscle, has the uncanny ability to shapeshift into virtually anything
        >but he can't actually control his power, it's only via a remote control and Sleet operates
        >Sleet for his part is the "brains" of the duo and doesn't really do anything himself
What a fricking bizarre team. Everything about them just looks like something out of a Deviantart transformation fetish page.
Who comes up with this shit?

Sleet and Dingo were made to be fetish characters. It's right there from conception.

I knew Sleet was the same VA as Brain as soon as I heard him.

Well, Maurice Lamarche is pretty distinctive. If you watched The Real Ghostbusters as a kid, you'll be able to pick him out anywhere, even if you don't learn his name until your 30's.

I remember everyone in chat screaming the fetish writer’s name whenever it would appear in the opening credits. It’s amazing just how insane SU actually is, and Tamers isn’t cranking anything up to 11.

IIRC that writer also worked on TMNT, so I'm wondering if he tried to funnel all the kinky fantasies he had about Bebop and Rocksteady into Sleet and Dingo

There was a Cinemaphile stream for Sonic Underground? Dammit, wish I could've seen it too. I actually had a lot of fun with the series thanks to the fact that I saw its annotated version. The show is perfect for watching with a group and mocking all the stupid stuff in it.
Also, I remember that sea sponge captain. The show had a lot of strange designs but that one was particularly memorable.

There’s a reason the French (and German) dub is noted as being superior.

It's "Urkel". And his name is Jaleel White. I found his first video appearance on youtube...the entire thing is cringe. Camp Cucamonga. *shudder*
