About to watch this for the first time, what am I in for? It came out at a time where comedy movies were just painfully unfunny so I never gave it a chance.

That you’ve never seen it certainly explains why you consistently go full moron
It's a shitty movie about shitty people who make shitty movies for other shitty people who hate shitty movies. And morons.
Comedy kino with a surprisingly funny performance by Tom Cruise
it's actually good and the last time someone will be able to do black face and it be accepted.
One of, if not the, greatest comedy of all time
the last comedy movie
you
The last time a movie was made before PC cancel culture had completely taken over Hollywood. Its not great but slightly better than most comedy movies these days mostly due to the performances rather than the jokes themselves.
It’s pretty funny. Not as funny as people make it out to be, but still funny.
It's cheeseball stupid-funny flick but Robert Downey Jr is really good.
Robert Downey jr in blackface and Tom Cruise in israeliteface is worth the watch.
This performance really takes on a whole new meaning when you realize he was playing Harvey Weinstein
It's wonderfully on the nose that his name is Les Grossman
> he was playing Harvey Weinstein
He was playing any number of coked up Hollywood producer
Still so frustrating we never got the Les Grossman spinoff movie.
On it's surface, Tropic Thunder is decent war parody comedy with a few good bits notably Downey in redface and blackface on top and Cruise in a fat suit. On another level though this is Ben Stiller's ultimate frick you to Brett Easton Ellis.
If you're not familiar, Ellis wrote American Psycho. Two more of his books, Rules of Attraction and Less Than Zero had been made into movies but are awful. American Psycho was great though and also one of his better books. He had been hoping that the next film adaptation of his would be Glamorama which is even now one of his best works to date.
Glamorama tells the story of a fashion model who is vaguely manipulated/brainwashed because he's so stupid into being an assassin. Just as Ellis was working on trying to bring it to light Ben Stiller comes out with Zoolander which is a direct parody in enough ways there was a heated lawsuits over it.
There's another major aspect to Glamorama though of a real/fake war which is the basis for Tropic Thunder. Insuring that Glamorama can never be made into a film of any worth because it's already been spoofed twice. So while the movie itself is nothing special, as an epic act of trolling it earns a gold metal. And I like Ellis a frick load more than Stiller but it's still well played.
I mean, that has literally never stopped anybody doing literally anything. Did people have a fricking meltdown when there was Antz at the same time as A Bug's Life? Or Armageddon and Deep Impact? Or This Is The End And The World's End? Or Turner & Hooch And K-9? Or Dante's Peak And Volcano? Or The Cave And The Descent? Or The Illusionist And The Prestige? Or Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down?
Nobody cares. Just make the film.
>b-b-but parody
I doubt the crossover is that great and it isn't like
>Guy is moronic and manipulated into being a bad guy
Hasn't been done to death, either. Hardly 'epic trolling', sounds like Ellis just wants an excuse in case it is shit.
Ohh indeed, and that's why Ellis lost his lawsuit and Stiller made Tropic Thunder just to piss him off even more.
Also, I should say that much as I like Brett Easton Ellis' books, they don't translate into movies well at all. American Psycho is the best there is but the movie is a weak shadow of the book. Glamorama is far more convoluted and was probably never going to.work anyway.
It's one of the funniest movies of all time
it's literally the last real comedy ever made
that black guy on the right looks a lot like robert downey jr
among tom cruise's best performances. great comedy before such was banned
Very funny. I love it purely because they got Steve Coogan to play the director and he just pulls that shit off so well. He pulls of those kind of characters well (which is why after Tropic Thunder, all his Hollywood tier films were him playing rich buttholes).
I am still pissed off Steve Coogan never got to play Bond. Daniel Craig is a charisma vacuum and nearly killed the whole series
The first scene was unironically great war kino. The middle kinda dragged a bit but saved by memorable jokes and Cruise. The end picked up again. Go watch the making of feature afterwards.
Ben Affleck, despite being famous, is actually pretty funny
RDJ does one of the greatest comedic performances of all time.

I guarantee you haven't seen this
i worked at the movies when this came out.
a epileptic went full moron and the ambulance had to come.
i asked for this movie last christmas so i could have a second copy, for the inevitable banning by the woke left of this masterpiece. you NEED to watch this, because they dont want you to.
It's essentially an Alternate Universe where Jack Black is straight up unlikable yet redeems himself anyway..
A decent comedy. It won't make you laugh out loud, but you won't regret watching it.
