It's alright for background viewing but the further the show goes on, the more evident it becomes that the supposedly evil religious folks who wants the vamps exterminated are completely in the right. It clearly uses vamp as a metaphor for being gay, but in this case the "gays" are literally killing people indiscriminately and with zero remorse. Even the so called "good" vampires.
The show is only decent until the third season because the subplots still connect and all characters are relevant, more or less. it focuses on the people living in that southern town in luisiana after vampires become public, usually it's structured like >sookie, bill, eric and pam subplot >jason getting in trouble and fricking some girl >lafayette being based but suffering >jessica and hoyt soap opera >sam and werewolves/shapeshifters >the rest of the town people and their dumb problems
After season 3, the subplots disconnect almost completely and the show drags hard when it focuses on the townspeople, and you can tell they don't know what to do with certain characters but just keep them around to fill the running time
