>In "Supernatural Horror In Literature" (written 1926–27, revised 1933, published in The Recluse in 1927), when telling about "The Yellow Sign" by Chambers, H. P. Lovecraft wrote: >...after stumbling queerly upon the hellish and forbidden book of horrors the two learn, among other hideous things which no sane mortal should know, that this talisman is indeed the nameless Yellow Sign handed down from the accursed cult of Hastur—from primordial Carcosa, whereof the volume treats... >Hastur is amorphous, but he is said to appear as a vast, vaguely octopoid being, similar to his half-niece Cthylla. In the mythos, Hastur is presented as having "a strange effect on artists and playwrights.
Basically his true form is more like pic related. Tentacles might've been a bit on the nose for the climax though.
Hastur = Esther/Ishtar sometimes Astor (meaning Star, hence "Movie Star", a"Star of the Stage" etc).
Meaning The Eastern Star. The feminine version of The Morning Star (Lucifer/Satan).
It's the spooky way of describing "The Spirit of Inspiration" or The Muse.
This is why it's so resonant within stories like this, because it's related to the act of creativity itself (and the perceived sacrifices required of creatives to properly harness it - being lock-ins, drunks, buttholes, incels, autists etc)
I think "Yellow King" is playing a further linguistic game in that the word "Yoke" is mixed into it. Meaning "The Yoke of Time" as OP already mentioned (deadlines are the bane of creatives, but a necessity otherwise they'd never finish anything) but also another reference to the Muse imprisoning (via a Yoke/Yoking) the creator in a kind of hell.
Possibly also implying that writing itself is a form of demonic conjuring. Demons being memetic constructs (rather than little ooga-booga imps hanging out in a burning lakeside gated community) and their full impact on the world (and the writer) not really being knowable.
TD1 is structured like the story of what happened is morphing while they're telling it. Like it's a living thing that went dormant then comes back to life, and greater power, as they retell in in the present time-period. It was still lingering because the story hadn't been completed yet (like an old half-written novel haunting it's author) and a final sacrifice hadn't been made (Rust or the Big Guy - who bares the Yoke going forward? Clearly Big Guy was carrying it all those years). So, Rust becomes the Yellow King or "The Yoked King". The master/slave of the story (the Muse/Hastur).
Im from where this show takes place and I watched it recently and was shocked by how actually accurate it was. They got everything right from the scenery to the constant plants in the background to the level of poverty, especially in the flashback scenes in the 90s.
The basic case of the show was based on a real incident of a group of satanist operating a daycare of molesting the children in rituals.
Outside of that I do know of incidents of girls from poor white trash families running away at like 16 and working in sleazy truck stop strip clubs to avoid being homeless. Louisiana is a third world country, I dont think Americans really grasp how poor it is.
It was a sex ring operated by rich elites of South Louisiana who filled it with bizarre rituals and the kids of that sex cult started just carrying on that bizarre tradition.
The grandfather guy who fricked everybody on his property and produced illegitimate children and fricked them too. He was dead of old age but the inbred family continued fricking everybody they could.
Don't be stupid, talking about the first season isn't necessarily going to make people want to watch the newest season, which comes out on January 14th exclusively on HBO.
true detective went off a cliff when they revealed the killer was some fat moronic manbaby. the whole time he was on screen i was thinking of windom earle from twin peaks

it's half-baked reference of a book
Sadly, worse things have happened in Louisiana

is the prostitution thing really as widespread as the show portrays?

TALK ABOUT TRUE DETECTIVE SO YOURE MORE LIKELY TO WATCH OUR NEW SLOP JUST DO IT
Don't be stupid, talking about the first season isn't necessarily going to make people want to watch the newest season, which comes out on January 14th exclusively on HBO.

true detective went off a cliff when they revealed the killer was some fat moronic manbaby. the whole time he was on screen i was thinking of windom earle from twin peaks
iirc it was still very much a group effort and he was just a grunt, albeit one with more status
he wasn't all that different from the other bozos the pair killed and then covered up
>i was thinking of windom earle from twin peaks
So what's the problem, you're thinking about peak.
no i'm thinking about the sub-par part of an otherwise 10/10 show
Is that an edited Hardy Boys cover?
