He was abusive and wanted to get into his grandson's life. Pete saw a way out of having Darwin grow up with a drink violent grandfather and took it.
Pete's not a 'good' guy. He's they guy we deserve. He's willing to do bad shit for the greater good.
Also, the supernatural will not be explained (it's Alaska!). Clark killed Annie because he thought she was using him but found her phone and she had recorded a message to her friend saying that she truly loved him. That made him go insane and imagine a J-Horror version of Annie in his dreams and later irl as he went more and more insane,
The mine only found the body and made Hank cut it,s tongue to send a message. Hank thought he was doing something good as it appeared to be an accident (the mine fricked with the crime scene). He thought he was protecting the protesters from themselves since Annie a^eared to have died in a machinery accident when sneaking in the mine.
The season 1 hints are just red herring and won't be explained.
The mine is dumping their shit in Night Country. It's why the water is black/polluted and may or may not be the reason for the hallucinations. But they say the hallucinations predates the dumping in the last episode, so it's left to you imagination.
And the sscientists were forced at gunpoint to get naked by crazy Clark and go into the tunnels where they got frozen by a localized weather event as Clark was doing this as a sacrifice to ghost!Annie so she would leave him alone.
And Pete kills Dr Who in the end, the real bad guy, and gets away with it. Danvers suspects it, but doesn't say anything.
        Yeah. I'm serious. Yahoo Serious.

Never explained or even brought up as a plot point.
Oh, and Clark kidnaps Leah in E6 because she looks like Annie. He bring her in the Night Country tunnels as a sacrifice. Shit goes down, Danvers gets hurt taking a blow meant for Leah, Navarro kills Clark.

The scene read more like Hank wanted Pete to kill him because he hated what he had become. The look they exchanged, the fact he didn't even have his finger on the trigger, Pete going for a head shot. The whole Hank saving Pete's life is a dark mirror of this. Pete is saving his dad's soul by killing him.
HAHAHA like the show would be this deep. Nah, it's just moronic and the actors are trying their best to save it. They all rewrote the scene because it didn't make sense at all. Read Hank's actor's interview. He's all Issa is great but then he tells all the shit that went down during filing and you realize it would have been 20X worst, the only reason it's at least kind of watchable is that the actors (even the newbies) rewrote their scenes. Frick, ALL the actors wrote their own death scenes. They suck, but the original ones were worst.

It was a very different scene. It was the problem scene out of the five episodes that I was in, and Issa agreed. We met—Jodie and Kali Reis and Isabella Star LaBlanc and Finn Bennett and I. We had a couple of weeks to have all-day meetings where we would read the episodes, discuss, rewrite together. We rewrote that scene piece by piece to try to make it more believable, more subtle, and just more in service to the story as a whole.
The strokes were much broader originally. And there were things that strained credibility. So it was all about making it believable. Even up until we were shooting—I came in to shoot on that day and an idea had come up about how if Jodie's somehow unarmed, it can all work. If she's got a weapon on her, it's probably not going to work. So the idea that she takes her sidearm off and lays it on a table, and then I pick up that weapon—that was something that was decided at the last moment.

        >I certainly made up a very extensive backstory for Hank, and part of that was done with Issa. I normally would do that kind of prep work alone, but because the Hank that I first read when I was offered the show, one of my concerns was…Issa is an incredible writer. But I just felt like he could be a lot more shaded and subtle and nuanced and more of a complex human being. And she agreed. And so we began to speak about that and I realized quickly that I would just muse about an idea sometimes to her, and the next draft of the script, that would be there.

        >It was a very different scene. It was the problem scene out of the five episodes that I was in, and Issa agreed. We met—Jodie and Kali Reis and Isabella Star LaBlanc and Finn Bennett and I. There's women, but the characters are good and their arcs are good. It's not just woke for the sake of woke, it's plot related. Unlike season 4. But season 4 isn't really woke. The writing is so bad that the woke themes don't even make sense. There was some interesting shit to explore that you would have seen as woke, but it's not even surface level. I mean, shows like Supergirl had one the nose sledgehammer woke writing. This show (Season 4) is so bad it makes Supergirl looks like fricking Hamlet if you compare them. There's no, and I mean NO exploration of any of the woke themes. The daughter wants to reconnects to her native culture. You see her put fake chin tats. That's all. Nothing else. No explanation, no actual native culture showned, nothing. You see a birthhouse. That's it. No explanation, not exploration, nothing. The writers think it's enough native culture. Frick, season 4 makes exploitation movies look good. At least they use the actual culture. I guess Alaska has asian ghost and not their own supernatural lore now. Frick season 4. Frick it in it's fake native ass.

Nah. They'r efor women and are called kakiniit. It's a big deal because it was illegal to have them some decades ago during the forced assimilation of our people. Up until the early 70s or late 60s. I'm not an expert, I don't know much about my own culture except for what my grandad taught me. It was mostly hunting/fishing related.
I'm mostly a fedora tipping atheist, but some people, older, see them as religious. Most younger people see them as social activism or just 'cool' (pun intended). Some moronic wiccan-tier bullshitter see them as healing/healer magic. They were in the past, but it predates the meeting of the white people so it's mostly LARPing since these traditions were almost already gone by the time whitey came here.

Men going for weeks at a time is usual since there's a lot of fishing industries. Even if you work other jobs, if the town is small enough you may work in a bigger town nearby and only come back during the week-ends. It's actually weird to see Prior's wife acting like that.

At least they talk and have experiences about the culture they claim to be from.
The show can't even do that. Why use natives as characters and talk about using native lore if you're not gonna use natives and native lore in any way, shape or form except for made up bullshit like the spiral symbol and J-Horror ghosts? OMG we see native looking people paint tats on each other! So powerful and deep!
Issa is the worst kind of racist since she doesn't seem to be aware that she is one. We wanted to see REAL native lore and learn about the town/it's people/the native population! So that we can care about their plight. But all we got was Danvers having sex, Navarro being angry, Leah whining, some protesters being angry because.. dirty water and babies, and Prior investigating off-screen.
Frick, Danvers doesn't even talk about the dead babies after her daughter writes murderer on the mine. Really? The writing is such a pile of shit.

we had the exact same talk with S2 and S3. I can't wait for you contrarian homosexuals try to tell me Night Country was the last season just because they released S5

I don't remember my exact thoughts on S2 and S3. I think I was slightly disappointed by S2 and for some reason I don't think I developed a lot of thoughts on S3 even though I finished it.

Maybe I'm just blocking my memories as a coping mechanism.

      >should
One of Danvers/Navarro murdered. The other one injured and forced to drop the case at gunpoint.
They go to the media and leak everything even though it results in them copping a murder charge for that case from years prior. We see a montage all the bad guys seething and shouting before getting legal slaps on the wrist/fired but no real consequences.
      >will happen
They'll find crystal clear evidence in the cave and go above the chief's head and get a complete admission of guilt from the main perpetrators but it will be implied that the real network of bad guys still exists in the shadows.

Remove the pop songs and use Inuit chants as the soundtrack. Some are creepy, some are sad, some are happy.
Remove Sadako/Kayako and use things from inuit lore. Antlers. Whatever. Anything would be less cliché than Ju-On On Ice.
Remove jump scares and use creepiness instead.
      Less drama, more investigation.
More flashbacks of Annie so we can actually care.
More info on the scientists. More info on the mines.
Less out of nowhere unexplained/never talked about again events like the Navarro ear bleed and fight in the ER.
More Leah, but actually make her explain herself and learn about her native culture. The angry teen bit is shit. She can be the character we learn about the town from. Her POV as an outsider getting in touch with the native part of town could have worked wonders.
Less moronation. You call a vet when you have people able to amputate next door and you fricking meet them face to face like an hour later?
      More Hank. Less hitman Hank.
More wide/distance shots (or ANY SHOT) of Ennis. Let us feel how remote it is.
Use the cold. Show us the cold. Close your fricking doors, wear gloves, protect your ears. It's supposed to be fricking Alaska with -40 to -50 ffs.
And make fricking mist when you talk (but no CGI please)
Less CGI. The caribou were... okay, I guess. The boat looked like it came from a 1992 Sierra PC game.

Depends. The sun can be warm here, but most windows have shutters designed for the climate. Having your windows open to let the sun in is for when you're not at home and only for a small part of the day.
The windows themselves are supposed to be enough to keep the cold out. They never are.

Funnily enough it was the only part of this season I gave a frick about. It’s a nice classic tragedy; Hank saves his son from certain death, raises him by himself after the mother walks out (mirrored by Pete’s prostitute wife throwing him out for doing his fricking job), and then is himself killed by the very life he raised and cultivated, because he sold his soul to the devil.
Put an actual writer and director on this show, make the Priors the two cops working the case, and you’ve got the possibility of kino on your hands.
Unfortunately they end up being the E-plot to a show with enough threads to fill the alphabet.

        Anonymous

True, a cliche noir plot but it could be much better if Hank was full fleshed character. It's funny how he gets all thee backstory few minutes before he gets killed.
I guess that's how actors tried to salvage the script but it didn't work.

last episode towards the end had a few good shots of the snow storm along with the bodies and remaining cops had a shot from above that was good. really not a lot of creativity on display sadly, so the good stuff really stands out. few moments before this shot then this shot.

the obvious choice would be to turn the darkness/storm into their own character. but we didnt really get that.

The most recent episode was actually good. Surprising given the last episode was awful. Finally, they've dropped all the stuff which has nothing to do with the investigation, including most of the lame ghost stuff / flashback sequences. If most of the show was paced like this, then it would have been good in its entirety. The reason the first season works so well is because the family drama is sidelined for the most part, and the mystery is such a major component of what's driving that show. Someone could edit this show to be tighter. I like the casting, and the "woke" stuff is espoused by woke characters so it makes sense. The only misstep they took with that stuff was the scene with the daughter and her girlfriend in that shop. It's so on the periphery that having it felt more like a purposeful decision to depart from the story just to show lesbian romance.

No need to dwell on bitter attitudes like that. Focus on what's in your control. If a woman leaves you then either your prospects are weak, or you didn't select correctly. Either way, if you live a fruitful life, you can better dictate your situation in regard to this.
