Before a new series gets the green light, the creators have years to perfect the original script and a lot of time for preproduction. Once season 1 becomes a success, the studio wants another season in a year, so the creators are forced to cut a lot of corners. Pizzolatto was writing the script for TD season 1 for 5 years, then had a few months to churn out another whole season.

Even with that in mind, S2 is still great and better than most TV since. I agree that it really needed atleast 10 episodes or 13 to get it's point across. Had it been given that, I honestly think it would have been better received but it's still a very good season. All of TD, bar season 3, is outstanding television.

I've been meaning to ask but some homosexual got me rangebanned last week. Should I watch S2 of picrel shows?
I finished True Detective S1 last night and it was top shelf kino, and I've also seen Fargo S1 since winter(had already seen the original movie). Now I finally have time to binge, but I've read that the rest of True Detective seasons are subpar milking with extra diversity, and Fargo breaks away from the movie origins and S1 plot "save for filler excuses".
I stopped watching TVseries almost entirely 4 years ago for this exact reason (see Westworld, Flash, ASOUE, The Terror etc), and I'm fully content with remembering these shows as 10-episodes kino miniseries. Should I watch on or drop them at S1?

      Anonymous

S2 of True Detective is very good and not really woke, bar a gay cop detective but it's not like he's a raging homosexual and the show portrays him as stunning and brave but a flawed individual who is deeply ashamed of his past. It's undercooked and the mystery isn't some grand conspiracy like S1 but it's still great television. Fargo S2 and the later seasons just become fricking drivel with the occasional cool character here and there who gets barely any screentime. I wouldn't bother.

The murders aren't related to a grand conspiracy in S1 either

S2 and S3 of Fargo were both kino imo
The Ewan MacGregor characters are hilarious and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a smokeshow

        S1: Characterization > Plot
        S2: Plot > Characterization

The crime aspect of things is better in s2. S1 is carried by Marty and Rust -mostly Rust. Season 2 is a really good show. It's just not as good as S1. If they made s2 as another show, they wouldn't get backlash as much as they get and most people would praise it.

thanks for the input guys. I think I'll try watching TD S2 first, with lowered expectations. It's the same director right?

Same writer but different directors. I beg of you to watch it with as much an open mind and leave whatever opinions about it you've seen on here and the internet in general and not be preconditioned before viewing it. Ideally, every piece of media should be viewed with this clear state of mind but it's doubly true for TD S2. You'll appreciate it on another level and keep coming back to it like I and many other anons have done.

I miss the True Detective threads for S1 and S2. I think it says something about S2 that everyone seemed to hate it because it didn't live up to S1, but everyone still eagerly awaited every new episode and participated in the threads.

      >Should I watch on or drop them at S1?
If I'm being honest, yes. You miss nothing by not watching the other seasons of those shows. I share the sentiment with other anons that they're perfectly fine, enjoyable and even better in retrospect compared with today's shows, but they're just not nearly as memorable as their season 1 counterparts. And ultimately isn't that your question? S1 of shows like True Detective, Fargo, The Terror, Westworld, etc are all in the unmissable category, where they feel like perfectly crafted 10-hour films. Their following seasons however just can't recapture that magic and feel formulaic at best.
Compare these shows to something like Twin Peaks. Even with a completely dull s2, no one will tell you to skip it because s3 is as good - if not better - than s1. You just can't say that about these other shows, so don't feel the need to go out of your way to watch them.

Season 1 of west world was kino. Problem was it was clearly a self contained story they had no idea how to continue, and HBO wanted it to be the new game of thrones

The same reason the vast majority of sequels suck: they're cash-grabs that lack the artistic spark of the original. Most original stories are self-contained and therefore don't require or benefit from a sequel or prequel. True Detective S1 is a great example. The story spans like 20 years and is a fully fleshed out, comprehensive story about 2 detectives tracking down a serial killer. There's no need for a follow-up.

Same thing with The Sopranos and The Wire, in my eyes. There's this weird cult of personality around these shows where people won't admit what is obvious. These shows just stagnated and ended in a shit note and had a lot of shit and fluff to be praised to the high heavens as much as they are. Soi nonsense like BB and BCS are even worse offenders of this.

          >Wire s5 was a disgrace.
It had one moment that reinforces Wire's recurring theme if "everything just goes in circles and nothing changes".
When Lester became "McNulty" and McNulty became "police commissioner" with his scheme. Lester bullshits his newfound boss "just two more week and two more officeers on the case" over and over when McNulty fights kicks and scratches to get more resources for his "department" and there is never enough. Him, all his life blaming bosses that they don't give him enough resources to "solve crime problem once and for all". He was put into shoes of the boss and got taste of his own medicine. Ironic.

hypomania lester was really fun, I agree
            it saved the season
I like the secene when they are driving and Lester brings the fake jaws and tells McNulty something like "Im just teaching you, son", suggesting he had had more really unhinged moments like that in the past
I actually think they wasted Lester as a character by making him just stay behind a computer most of the time

Nah. At a certain point Succession completely runs out of ideas and just carries on via autopilot. They literally start recycling plot points. Logan tries to acquire Pierce again. Kendall betrays Logan again. Roman tries an ambitious business maneuver to impress his dad but sabotages himself. Tom and Shiv argue; Tom is insecure, Shiv is self-serving. Shiv disagrees politically with what ATN is doing. Rinse, repeat. Massive corporations are soulless and dehumanizing! Aren't we witty and astute for noticing that and for pointing it out a hundred and fifteen times? It's also very apparent that the writers aren't nearly as funny as they think they are, and their sense of humor gets more and more grating and tiresome as time goes on. Isn't it hilarious how Roman is talking about jizz again?

It really should have been a miniseries. It wears out its welcome long before it ends.

idk I enjoyed all of it and even the weakest seasons have some memorable episodes (episodes 1, 2 and 10 of season 3, and the kendall's birthday one too).
the acting is also always great
seasons 3 of true detective doesnt really have memorable perfomance's, but 1 and 2 do. And season 3 is just a weak rehash of season 1.
Imo this makes succession better than true detective, at least for now. If seasons 4 happens and its at least as good as season 2, that would make TD better or at least just as good as succession. But for now 33% (season 3) of TD is crap, at least for me.
        Just my humble opinion.

If it was great there’d be people actually discussing this shit show. It was a bad ending and it killed it.

Now the people who claim to love it don’t ever start threads. And when they do post about it, they only post vague “it’s kino” or “filtered” because it’s so lame an ending, its not worth defending
