Why the frick was Snowden such a big deal? Bet this James Bamford was like 'hey, why is Snowden getting all the credit' until he saw the guy had to end up in Russia as a Twitter troll lol. I guess Snowden was simply about breaching security protocols more like that troony manning rather than it was a heroic release of novel information. Lame.

He leaked details that people weren't aware of. So, for example, although people knew that the meta data from emails, sms, phone calls etc were being tracked and recorded, nobody really knew that the meta data was going through an elaborate process of social network analysis (creating a database of who knows who and who is linked to who). People knew that the NSA were bypassing American legal framework for spying on its own citizen's but they didn't really know that they were using proxy telecommunication businesses registered in Egypt to do this. I don't think people realised the extent of detailed surveillance of communications of non-american citizens who lived in america or their internet traffic which inevitably travel through america. NSA view the rights of non-americans as a grey area.

But generally most of it wasn't surprising. He did a bit to make normal people aware of America's dubious data collection exploits but then they lost interest.

It's the go-to CIA narrative that people regurgitate whenever anyone brings up Snowden. As if it actually excuses what the intelligence community is doing, not only in America, but all across the "Five Eyes" aparatus in general. It also provides a convenient excuse for the fact that this is happening out in the open and normie npcs are more concerned with celebrity gossip and identity politics than they are with the fact they're being spied on. The last thing the 3 letter organisations want is people thinking deeply about this. They certainly don't want people asking themselves the question "what are they doing with all that data anyway?"

The greatest black-pill is that Snowden was and still is a NSA plant, and all the information he released was a psyop. Literally just think about how moronic his story is and the fact he didn't release anything involving decryption programs and backdoors into cryptographic schemes, besides ones that were already known about like the ECC rng backdoor and logjam. Crazy, the organization with a completely black budget and is the number one employer of number theorists hasn't even attempted any sophisticated attacks or backdoors kek. Fricking morons

As a teenager I sided with Snowden. As an adult? Sometimes you have to do morally shitty things. National security is priority numero uno- anyone who says otherwise is incredibly sheltered.

I don't care if the government spies on me. Not one iota. Watch me jerk off to Nami hentai, who cares? There are millions of endpoints to monitor, logically there isn't a spook watching each of them. when the president has a (D) next to his name, and "trusted" outlets that would actually make a dent in this regard don't report on this. Attacking the government is always seen as far-right/libertarian if it's a dem house, and even other flavors of leftism get mixed-in when they're a threat, see: Berniebros being memed as a totally-real thing from scared DSA/ML-types

This is exactly what happened with Obama-era whistleblowers starting with Snowden, as basic b***h dems and ML leftists alike seeded the idea that because Snowden was some kind of centrist, this was ACTUALLY an attack on Obama, and also why didn't he whistleblow for Bush? This is the playbook all the way to the Twitter files. If it's connected to a dem-centric government, it's doing a libertarian-ism, but more importantly: show's that infighting is happening, ANOTHER reason a significant chunk of the left wanted Bernie fricking gone no matter how

We're so jokerfied that people make memes about corporate advertisers and FBI agents listening in on them. Compared to the sort of healthy paranoia towards surveillance we saw in 00's movies like The Dark Knight... the government basically buck broke us and no one talks about it.

The US really shouldn't have spent 50-60 years virtue signaling to the world about how morally superior they were because it's all just coming back to bite them back in the ass.

There's a difference between having moral superiority and virtue signaling.
The US virtue signals without having moral superiority. In fact the reason it virtue signals so hard is because it knows it doesn't have moral superiority.

They don't care how a foreign country chooses to govern their own country, as long as it doesn't interfere with the investments they've made in those countries.
They're pure business, and leave politics to the sovereignty of the foreign country (as it should be).

China has never engaged in virtue signaling.
The very fact it does business with everyone and doesn't get involved in foreign politics is just ONE example of that.
Show me one example where China says 'we're more moral than you'. You won't find it.
China is a realist, not an idealist. They know every human being engages in the same dirty tactics.

this country became a third world shithole over a decade while conviently ignoring all the trouble we have self imposed on us and the best about it, we even import the customs form the united states of israel like trannification, cancle culture and body positivity.

            >"hey, we fricked up bad in the past, let's not make the same mistake again"

As a teenager I sided with Snowden. As an adult? Sometimes you have to do morally shitty things. National security is priority numero uno- anyone who says otherwise is incredibly sheltered.

I don't care if the government spies on me. Not one iota. Watch me jerk off to Nami hentai, who cares? There are millions of endpoints to monitor, logically there isn't a spook watching each of them. You'd have to be pretty far up your own ass to think the NSA is watching you go about your miserable dead end life.

If the "shady" shit they did saved even one life or stopped a single bad foreign actor, then it was worth.

The founding fathers were building a country, not maintaining the most powerful global hegemony ever to exist. They did what they had to do, now we'll do what we need to do. There's no sense clinging to constitutional ideals like some kind of ideological life preserver.

would you also not care if a government killed you to justify some foreign invasion to earn some money?

                >we need to sacrifice the uniquely american ideals that built the nation for the sake of preserving something else instead

The USA is not number 1 because the founding fathers are godlike entities who could do no wrong. We're number 1 because we're enormous, in an incredibly defensible position geographically, and because the events of ww1 and ww2 put us into a unique position economically and geopolitically to outpace our neighbors and project our culture globally.
Ideals do not make us great. Force makes us great, and with that force we can protect (and project) our ideals.

Just look at this thread, why do they need to when the average normalgay thinks like this [...]
