Back in the 19th century there was a movement of Christians in Americans called ”adventism.” Advent refers to the arrival of Christ, which is why the season before Christmas is called advent. Adventists had a lot of unique beliefs, but the biggest one was the belief that the Bible was encoded with clues giving an exact date for the second coming. They had a day picked out, and it came and went without Jesus returning from Heaven. This is called “the Great Disappointment.” Afterwards, they splintered into several groups, the Seventh Day Adventists are one, who ditched the belief that the Bible was encoded with a specific date for Christ’s return. Another group is the Jehovah’s Witnesses, who retained the belief that, but said the original date was calculated wrong. They gave new dates for the second coming seven times. In 1914, after it happened again, they changed the belief and said Jesus did return to earth in 1914, but invisibly. The original belief, of course, is that Jesus is returning in the sky for the entire world to see, not an invisible return to prepare the world for the last days, but whatever. In the mid-20th century, they used the slogan “millions now living will never die,” but dropped it after it became clear that it wasn’t happening then either. This is why their current doctrine is just “any day now, it will happen soon.”
