That's not entirely wrong. The creators came from Steven Universe. It's more like Recess for modern kids set in a creek. The diversity just is, and is rarely specifically highlighted. Kelsey's gay episode was an exception where a crush was a central plot point.

At this point, lesbianism is the safest and most "accepted" way to shove gender issues into your cartoon without causing a shit storm. Think back and compare how many shows have lesbians or lesbian allegories to those that have homosexuality of two men.
The other factor is that both in cartoons and other fiction as well as in real life it's just not as sexually charged. They often seem like best friends shacking up together, as with Princess Bubblegum and Marceline
This insanity is what you get with a culture giving up its Christian Roots, which teaches that there is no sex in heaven and that our specific means of reproduction comes largely from original sin. Kids naturally care about innocent things like adventure and animals, not the ways of our sinful world.
