They weren't ashamed of the source material. I rewatched it last week and it's still impressive how much it feels like an old comic book brought to life.
I've always thought this as well, idk what it is. It might just be the way Raimi films. Like the spidey scent gets its own unique sound that we all remember, the web slinging gets its own distinctive sound, the camerawork is real fluid. There also isn't some insane powercreep/galatic situation, just Peter fighting his most iconic villain in his city. Every shot could be a comic book panel, and I think it's because of Raimi's choices.
It's a movie. Off course, everybody agrees that the way a painter paints is the most important part of his art. But strangely , in the movies people are not only not really sensitive to direction, but even tend to minimize it's importance.
Raimi being one of the best directors in movie history, no wonder his style oozes from every frame in this beautiful trilogy. Off course, script is important. That's why spidey 3 is the worst of the saga, the script is weaker. But Raimi is at his peak, thus the movie is still fricking great.
yeah it's tge perfect combination of raimi and his team both understanding the appeal of comic book adventures and having the skill to translate that ibto a movie
Exactly this. Both 1 and 2 came off as perfect adaptations true to their souce material. Plus the direction and shot choice was purposeful and CGI was an occasional tool, not an omnipresent crutch. Just rewatched Spiderman 2 with my daughter and even she noted how the web swinging shots seemed so intense compared to the new ones. I think a LOT of the capeshit is because of CGI taking over and the whole thing being a cartoon with nonsense physics a la Dr Strange, scenes lose consequence because we the audience can no longer subconsciously view them as real. In the old days they would use physical stunts as much as possible then use CGI to complete a shot not quite possible, the tool was used to replicate something more practical rather than using it as a glorified game engine. They have to be films first.
>They weren't ashamed of the source material. I rewatched it last week and it's still impressive how much it feels like an old comic book brought to life.
It's also why all the Venom parts in SM3 suck, Raimi didn't grow up with 80's and 90's Spider-Man so he never had any attachment to the character. He cared about Sandman and that's why he's in the best parts of that movie.
It's actually not even that, Raimi hadn't planned or wanted Venom in the movie at all. It was a push by the studio that forced it to happen. Raimi only planned Sandman as the villain in the movie originally. That's why the movie feels like it's 3 different movies jammed together and part of the reason everyone hates Sony (or used to) when it came to films. They were also originally planning on doing 6 films but with all the meddling and bullshit the actors decided to break their contracts and Raimi peaced out.
Imagine a world where we got 6 toby movies concluding with the sinister 6, god it was going to be amazing. Frick Sony.
batman, although he wears a cape, is not a superhero, because he doesn't have super powers, so it's not capeshit, which implies superheros, thanks for reading
2: Peter Parker is the most relatable of all the super heroes, Tony stark/Bruce Wayne are billionaires, Superman/Thor are alien gods hulk mr fantastic we’re scientists, Peter is just a regular guy that got powers, nothing was extraordinary about him so he speaks to the masses
3: his strength of character, those other super “heroes” go around saving the world and stuff but spiderman isn’t above getting an old ladies stolen purse back to her
For real. All the best elements came together and made something timeless. Every rewatch I expect these films to be cringey and aged but it's literally the opposite.
My appreciation for these films never stops expanding. You'd assume once filmmaking technology reached today's status they'd be deemed irrelevant by something greater. Nope.
years old
I remember when I was little through the 90s even I could tell a movie from the 80s or prior looked _old_ it didn't look as good as the then current movies. You could see the green screens and puppets and paintings. Those movies would of been less than 20 years old depending on when in my childhood I saw them, but I always remember think yup this movies was made in the 80s.
I just don't see that same level of disconnect between today and 20 years ago. It's really quite interesting.
It was a blessing in disguise they waited so long to make these films and didn't make them in the 80s or 90s like they wanted to. Technology was just good enough for it to be believable by 2000-2001.
Raimiman 2 is peak capeshit overall. Ironman is the best of the modern films but that's about it. The X-Men tried but the films will never be as iconic as the Raimi trilogy. Keaton had a good run as campy take and the old Superman movies were good for their time but that's about it.
Unbreakable is peak realistic capeshit and takes a fat dump down the throat of the Nolan trilogy.
Chronicle is peak capeshit subversion, Snyder tried with Watchmen but Chronicle is better.
I love the x-men movies but it’s insane how low grossing they were compared to the Spider-Man movies, I don’t think it was until days of future past they even came CLOSE to the gross of one of the Spider-Man movies.
The Raimi trilogy is unbeatable because it cares about its characters. They’re human being first & superheroes second. No other capeshit has worked that out.
>They’re human being first & superheroes second. No other capeshit has worked that out.
But what about muh DC better because it's about gods trying to be human?
The only problem I have with the Raimi movies is MJ. Although that's a problem I have with pretty much every non-pre-00s-comic-MJ other than the Spectacular cartoon.
Is it really that hard to get flighty party girl with a troubled background right?
MJ only exists in the first movie to make Parker an even more relatable character for the male audience. They gutted her but it was a necessity sacrifice
Ironman or captain America was the last good cape shit from marvel.
You can't shit out more than 1 superhero movie a year and expect people to still care.
Marvel should have put a long pause on the genre after endgame.
We’re starting to delve into the more obscure aspects of comic book stories now like space and other dimensions but that’s what comics have always been ridiculous crap
This movie is literally a Christopher Walken movie with Penguin as the sideshow freak, featuring Catwoman as someone he partners with and featuring brief appearances from Batman. There's no real plot, there's no commentary, there's no metaphors or themes, no urgency, it's just Christopher Walken being crazy, Pengiun doing shit, and catwoman briefly mingling with batman until it ends. I watched this shit like 2 months and I don't even remember much of it, it's like a blur
The whole point is him being a gadgeteer hero who supplements his existing 'natural' powers with tech he built with his intellect. If he just Shot Web all by himself, what's the frigging point? The only place his intellect would come in is being a solid outfit maker.
I saw it at the cinema when it was released, and let's just say I felt no compulsion to see it again or any of the sequels once. Meanwhile, I'll see Keaton's Batman any time it is being replayed at a convenient cinema, which has been three times so far. I've also never seen an ad for Spiderman being replayed in any cinema. I'm sure it happens, but the audience would have to be a bunch of morons.
Spiderman isn't capeshit if you exclude crossovers and multiverse bullshit. That's why they force that stuff on him so much, they hate how good Spiderman is on his own. He makes everything else they create look bad.
It was basically the first time a comic book movie felt like a comic book movie. It had spirit and soul. It was filmed and came out before cellphones were huge so it feels timeless. It has that 90s optimism vibe that were the rage up until 9/11. Probably a golden age we took for granted.
They weren't ashamed of the source material. I rewatched it last week and it's still impressive how much it feels like an old comic book brought to life.

Whoever decided to hire Raimi for the spiderman movies earned his yearly bonus that year
Raimi singlehandedly saved Marvel
Don't forget James Cameron for coming up with the organic powers during the first draft of the film.
The president then producer of marvel
"[Indian Summer] made a lasting impression on producer Avi Arad, who loved Raimi in the film"
yeah it's tge perfect combination of raimi and his team both understanding the appeal of comic book adventures and having the skill to translate that ibto a movie
Imagine being a grown man praising capeshit
Imagine being insecure about your manhood on an anonymous board.

There's power in sincere storytelling. These movies are proof of it.
>sincere
i have been thinking this for years and more people are starting to point it out
modern media is no sincere
>sincere
>sincereless

embarrassing

>20 years old
>only superhero movie to surpass it is another Spidey film
kys
>troony gwen surpassing anyone
>ever
It's garbage.
>the best capeshit movie
That's still The Dark Knight and it's not even close.
batman, although he wears a cape, is not a superhero, because he doesn't have super powers, so it's not capeshit, which implies superheros, thanks for reading
The movie where Joker is overpowered and Batman is nerfed because LE REALISMO. Its an ok movie but Spiderman is better and rewatchable.
Not even the best Batman
Okay we get it the old spiderman movies are great you don't you to make this fricking thread every day
The only good capeshit was Batman (1966)
>best capeshit
Funny. That doesn't look X2: X-Men United.
cringe
1: it was made with SOVL
2: Peter Parker is the most relatable of all the super heroes, Tony stark/Bruce Wayne are billionaires, Superman/Thor are alien gods hulk mr fantastic we’re scientists, Peter is just a regular guy that got powers, nothing was extraordinary about him so he speaks to the masses
3: his strength of character, those other super “heroes” go around saving the world and stuff but spiderman isn’t above getting an old ladies stolen purse back to her
Open Matte > all
which model volvo is that in the background, I like it.
Looks like late 240 or early 740
it's a early to mid 1980s 240, based on the quad headlights
>WOW I CAN SEE MORE OF THAT BUILDING IN THE BACKGROUNG SO MUCH BETTER
You can still see more on the sides in the widescreen version. Why is there no perfect version?
fricking hell james franco was statue esque
can see the boom mic in left
>the "i'm something of a moron myself" scene
kek
homie you can see the fricking boom mic
>519
I'm not giving a (you) to that bait, but you're right.
Just erase that 0.
I AM SO HIGH
I CAN HEAR EVEEEEERRRRAH
Where did all the soul go in modern superhero films?
It wasn't specifically superhero stories that got worse, just all of Hollywood in general.
Batman, Batman Returns, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Hulk, Incredible Hulk and Unbreakable are the only cape kino.
1st half of Hanwiener?
I'd throw in Hellboy 2: The Golden Kino
So, are you saying the MCU destroyed Superhero genre?
I hate Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco and I STILL agree.
They’re all pretty terrible in this movie and it’s still just good
Everything good because of Sony. Everything bad because of Raimi.
Darkman and the Crow were better
>With great power, comes great responsibility
Such powerful, clean, and memorable writing. Can't even remember one marvel line half as good.
Also the best musical theme
For real. All the best elements came together and made something timeless. Every rewatch I expect these films to be cringey and aged but it's literally the opposite.

>You could see the green screens
Just like now
>puppets and paintings
Replaced with awful CGI that's even more distracting
It’s true. A lot of things just haven’t improved at the same rate in recent decades. Others have just plateaued naturally.
It was a blessing in disguise they waited so long to make these films and didn't make them in the 80s or 90s like they wanted to. Technology was just good enough for it to be believable by 2000-2001.
That scene where Doc Ock murders the doctors is brutal. They were just trying to save him.
Raimiman 2 is peak capeshit overall. Ironman is the best of the modern films but that's about it. The X-Men tried but the films will never be as iconic as the Raimi trilogy. Keaton had a good run as campy take and the old Superman movies were good for their time but that's about it.

Suspension of disbelief can only be suspended so long anon
man i forget she fricking jilted the astronaut guy and stood him up on the alter. Women just don't care lmao
as good as the movies are mary jane was fricking annoying
Truly, verily
The only problem I have with the Raimi movies is MJ. Although that's a problem I have with pretty much every non-pre-00s-comic-MJ other than the Spectacular cartoon.

It doesn't hold up as well as spiderman. Mostly because of Burton
This movie is literally a Christopher Walken movie with Penguin as the sideshow freak, featuring Catwoman as someone he partners with and featuring brief appearances from Batman. 1. Sam Raimi
2. James Cameron coming up with the organic powers.
Spidey having web shooting machines is so dumb compared to them being part of his body.
FRICK OFF WITH THE ORGANIC WEBS
STICKINESS AND SENSES ARE HIS POWERS, NOT ANYTHING GENUINELY SPIDER-LIKE
Organic webs make way more sense. Spidey having man made Spidey powers is dumb in comparison.
The whole point is him being a gadgeteer hero who supplements his existing 'natural' powers with tech he built with his intellect. If he just Shot Web all by himself, what's the frigging point? The only place his intellect would come in is being a solid outfit maker.
The Incredibles mogs so much of the capeshit genre it's insane.
I saw it at the cinema when it was released, and let's just say I felt no compulsion to see it again or any of the sequels once. alicia silverstone batnipples mr freeze batman
watchmen
devito penguin batman
>the only time sam raimi would direct another spiderman movie is with none other than tobey
He knows the industry is garbage at least.
Nope. Not even the best Spiderman
