I didn't read the comics so can't comment on it, but I don't think Ty Lee and Mai outright hate Azula. They just understand what she is like. She's like a boss you don't mind personally but hate professionally, or vice versa.

Yeah, the comics make it out like it was purely a fear thing where they didn't get along with her at all outside of pleasing her. My read is they got along fairly well but the power imbalance and Azula's willingness to use it to get what she wants, or more specifically what her father wants, fricked it all up.
Zuko is literally for any of the other earth girls. All of them are great options.
He really does need that grounded stability and reliability of EARTH.

It wouldn't have made much of a difference. The problem was always the shadow of Azula looming over the relationship. Both Ty Lee and Mai were too connected with his sister for Zuko to fully open up to either of them, which is what he really needed. So you'd just end up with the same situation of Zuko bottling it all up until the eclipse and then running away to join the Avatar. The only real difference would be Zuko groaning at Ty Lee's bubbliness instead of groaning at Mai being repressed in her own right.
If you want to make a real improvement, have Mai/Ty Lee (whichever one you've paired with him up to that point) go with Zuko after the Boiling Rock so we can get them being able to finally open up to one another without the specter of Azula getting in the way.

That would be interesting. You could have some fun moments: Ty Lee sympathizing with Aang not wanting to kill, Ty Lee flirting with Sokka in front of Suki, Mai and Katara snipping at each other and catching Zuko in the cross-fire, Mai and Zuko having a redo of their Ember island date.
Yeah, it wouldn't have been hard to make a little room for Mai/Ty Lee in the last couple episodes. I can easily imagine a little "I expect him back in one piece" moment when Zuko and Katara leave on their field trip.
The main question would be what Zuko's waifu does during the finale. I suppose it wouldn't be too disruptive to have her accompany Zuko and Katara, then help Katara fight Azula in the end. In fact, it could've opened the window for some interactions between full schizo Azula and one of her former friends, which could be neat.
Imagine poor Zuko though, having to deal with the Gaang's ribbing suddenly being supercharged. Ty Lee would tell them every story and bit of gossip she knows, and Mai would chime in with her own barbs.
Yeah it really baffles me why they simply wrote off Mai and Ty Lee until the last five minutes of the show. Them escaping the prison with Zuko and company would've been an excellent opportunity for some more character development but nope.

The issue with TyLee is it feels kind of over the top. She's the absolute antithesis of Zuko, she's bright, cheery, and optimistic, it feels definitely like you just gave Zuko a cute bimbo JUST BECAUSE. Though I remember having an idea that their relationship would always have the shadow of Azula looming about it. Like TyLee is afraid to have too much independent thought outside of Azula, so their relationship is stilted by that. It wouldn't have made much of a difference. The problem was always the shadow of Azula looming over the relationship. Both Ty Lee and Mai were too connected with his sister for Zuko to fully open up to either of them, which is what he really needed. So you'd just end up with the same situation of Zuko bottling it all up until the eclipse and then running away to join the Avatar. The only real difference would be Zuko groaning at Ty Lee's bubbliness instead of groaning at Mai being repressed in her own right.
If you want to make a real improvement, have Mai/Ty Lee (whichever one you've paired with him up to that point) go with Zuko after the Boiling Rock so we can get them being able to finally open up to one another without the specter of Azula getting in the way.

Yeah, it wouldn't have been hard to make a little room for Mai/Ty Lee in the last couple episodes. I can easily imagine a little "I expect him back in one piece" moment when Zuko and Katara leave on their field trip.
The main question would be what Zuko's waifu does during the finale. I suppose it wouldn't be too disruptive to have her accompany Zuko and Katara, then help Katara fight Azula in the end. In fact, it could've opened the window for some interactions between full schizo Azula and one of her former friends, which could be neat.
Imagine poor Zuko though, having to deal with the Gaang's ribbing suddenly being supercharged. Ty Lee would tell them every story and bit of gossip she knows, and Mai would chime in with her own barbs.

The issue with TyLee is it feels kind of over the top. She's the absolute antithesis of Zuko, she's bright, cheery, and optimistic, it feels definitely like you just gave Zuko a cute bimbo JUST BECAUSE.
