Likes to get pampered like he's a little child, she gives him poisonous mushrooms in just small enough doses to make him bedridden, but not kill him and he goes along with it because it reminds him of how his mother used to look after him when he was a kid.
i think it's more about the girl trying to be in control of him for a short time, when he's in control the rest of the time, she feels useless to him.

Without DDL it would have fallen flat on it's face. Cameron Diaz was a terrible casting choice.
It seems like a movie that was supposed to have the feel of a casino/goodfellas movies, but upon editing, scorcese realised it didnt work and had to edit it more conventionally, but didnt have the material for it. And then it ended up like this thing halfway between both. In all honesty, he shouldnt have directed it at all, only produced it.
It's just so oddly edited at times, I remember it even bothered me when I saw it when I was 13. I really enjoyed the setting and performances from DDL, but it felt so disjointed at times, especially towards the climax of the movie.
It was a big Hollywood movie for him and the studio more than likely tampered with his original vision, so he lost focus while making it. It’s a shame

I dont think you're aware how much weight his name carries. That would like making the claim that studios meddle with steve spielberg movies. He made a film that wasnt his best work, I like the film, but it's frustrating as it could have been so much more than it ended up being.
He has spoken about Shutter Island being his last studio film because he couldn't stand working with them anymore. Also, they wanted Departed characters to live for a sequel but he wouldn't do it.

I think that’s one of the big strengths of the movie, she is not especially attractive so his attachment to her comes from other desires. It makes their love feel more authentic and intriguing

Still a mid movie because you don't see any of his autistic obsession with dresses, their relationship is unconvincing, all you see is them eat breakfast and irritate each other for the whole movie.
