The people agreeing with the show here aren't looking at his character and what makes sense for the character to want or feel. They may want Hughie to be a sweet and cute gentleman in distress who gets saved by and greatly admires his super girlfriend. So they don't want Hughie to be anything near "more powerful or equal" even temporarily to the character they're inserting into.
Or they want to say something about it being okay for men to be weak... and not even risk themselves or try to help apparently. It is okay for people to be weak sometimes, not everyone is going to be a hero all the time. No one should have to shoulder all burdens and face all evils alone. People can have value even if they're weak. But that should be said and conveyed with some intelligence and sense, where we also admit that strengths are good and helpful and we should try to grow and help ourselves and each other.

The "racist's heart in a black superhero's body" stuff is EXACTLY the kind of philosophical topics they should tackle. Any time they try this season, or the whole show for the most part, to tackle any sort of nuanced take on politics, it is so laughably on the nose that it's a surprise more people do not genuinely think it's bad.
They should go all out with the fun, experimental type of morality like Star Trek but with butthole superheroes. A show that refuses to let go of its edgy humour cannot cross the threshold into serious drama unless it makes some drastic improvements in writing.
