see I never watched the 1995 film before this, only "that part" that keeps getting posted everywhere in webm and gif form. and I'm glad that's the way it was because now I can enjoy both 🙂
I remember when a bunch of asian morons I went to highschool with lost their minds over this casting. The casting of a character from a property which has maybe the easiest out for race swapping a lead in a movie in recent memory. One of the primary themes of the entire work is identity, what part of you makes it you, and if any of that really even matters. It's all but explicitly said that there's a ship of theseus thing going on with the major at best, and that she's a 100% artificial construct made by and designed for military use at worst.
There are all sorts of reasons to criticize the casting of the lead in the movie but her not being japanese is maybe the weakest one of all.
I just don't like ScarJo and her being so incredibly famous and identifiable works against the character. She's not able to "disappear" into roles so to speak.
That's a fair criticism and my personal position as well. It's a shame her casting overshadowed so many other aspects of the film. The set dressing and propwork were particularly nice but got overlooked by many due to the controversy surrounding the lead. Also I really liked Michael Pitt's performance as Kuze.
>overlooked by many due to the controversy surrounding the lead.
more like because they forgot to lit the scenes, difficult to discern shit when everything is -90% brightness (like is so common in live actions)
>She's not able to "disappear" into roles so to speak.
This is true for any A-lister. I thought Brad Pitt played a great hick in Kalifornia, because I'd never seen or heard of him before. Then later he just became Brad Pitt in any role he played.
Of course there are exceptions where an actor can dissapear into the part, but those are far and few between. Doesn't mean they're acting bad or doing the character a disservice, it just means you can't unsee their face.

Tom Cruise ‘Tropic Thunder’, and maybe ‘Collateral’
remember when everyone pretended to get mad at the casting for this movie? weird schizo psyop shit going on there
The funny part is that in the manga it's canon that Motoko Kusanagi's body is a popular Eastern European model, she's supposed to look huwite. The animated movie went further and actually made her look Eastern European.
There's a live action Mamoru Oshii movie called "Avalon" that's similar to GiTS style-wise and the Polish actress who plays the lead looks like movie Kusanagi
No. It really isn't.
They took the original story and turned it into robocop but serious, took the visuals that delivered so many deep points so well and dumbed it down to comical levels. >it's the ghost in the shell >you get me? >i mean you mind and your soul >and your hearth >LET ME EXPLAIN THAT TO YOU
and then it's just generic crap. Scarlet acted like shit too.
I wonder why they chose to do a dumbed down version of the movie and not adapt the Standalone Complex TV series storyline instead. The Laughing Man plot is a lot easier to follow and without all the philosophical rambling the movie has, plus the overall tone of the TV series is lighter and the Major is less cold and distant. Seems better suited to Hollywood. The second season of the TV series also gives her a decent backstory.
I never saw that, is that when she was prancing around in a bathing suit?
I haven't watched it. Looks kino. I haven't watched the original GitS either.
All I remember was the "white-washing" shitstorm when it was announced. I wonder if it's worth a watch.
You must watch the original first. The live action remakes some of the best scenes, just not as good, and changes the story into robocop.
>I never saw that, is that when she was prancing around in a bathing suit?
Well, you never know when you might need to go for a swim right?
The show is pretty good, it's a combination of standalone episodes and ones that are part of an overarching plot that gets resolved in the finale. There's also a lot more screen time for the secondary characters who only get one or two lines in the movie, and the adorable Tachikoma tanks. It's definitely better than the sequel movie "Innocence".
I don't get it. If you're doing a live adaptation of an animated film, you need to at least have some practical stuff. When it's a total CG fest like this, it's just a different style of animation with the occasional human thrown into a hybrid shot like Who Framed Roger Rabbit or Song of the South.

>Look it up and find out Ghost in the Shell is a manga and this isn't technically just an adaptation of the anime
I thought Mamoru Oshii wrote and created Ghost in the Shell, what kind of Mandela Effect shit is this
Basically they gut out the plot and characterizations of the manga and do a female remake of Robocop in not-Japan.
Total waste of their money and mine both.
i saw this movie in theaters , it was visually good looking.
Underrated 4 sure
remember when everyone pretended to get mad at the casting for this movie? weird schizo psyop shit going on there
I remember this movie got alot of advertising in normie spheres like snapchat and instagram
ScarJo belongs in drama not in action films.
elaborate a little more, im interested in your opinion
She's actually good in drama movies.
Ghost World, Lost in Translation, Marriage Story, Her, etc.
Did she ever give an interesting or fun performance as "badass action woman"?
No.
I can’t watch this because I love the 1995 one. Even if this one is good it isn’t the same and I just don’t care to see it.
She’s great in JoJo Rabbit.

it's so breathtakingly unoriginal
best performance is probably match point worst is probably lost in translation

Yeah. I really liked it anyway.

uhhhh anon?
post pictures of Scarlett Johansson in the bodysuit please and thank you
I'M GONNA DIRECT

It looks nice but it stinks otherwise tbh senpai
It's very rated. Mediocre

GHOST IN CEL

I thought Mamoru Oshii wrote and created Ghost in the Shell, what kind of Mandela Effect shit is this
>Mamoru Oshii
no, Masamune Shirow created ghost in the shell manga.
but at this point Oshii has probably done more for gits than Shirow.
No it's not. It's an okay watch on theater big screens, absolutely awful otherwise. Scarjo is the worst possible cast.
>Scarjo is the worst possible cast.
could have been a Black person anon.
one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. My expectations may have been sewer level but it was fricking amazing and a fun ride
I thought it was ok and love gits
