I can only assume Genndy had some long epic planned, got funding for a fraction of the eps, and crammed in as much of his story as he could instead of editing it down to something sensible.

It's a show that feels like a stream of consciousness. None of it is hard to understand but a bunch of stuff just happens in a continuous thread and a lot of it just seems like time filler. I also feel they should lean more into the bodysnatching thing as it is by far the most interesting part of the premise. Their mission to kill the generic evil, while necessary to have a plot goal and action, just isn't as compelling in comparison. Integrating the ideas by making the botched soul transfer more of a hindrance to their goal would make everything feel more coherent.

Definitely my main gripe with the show, too much time passes in between the fights and obstacles while new characters are introduced and it keeps piling up but never feels exactly resolved. Otto's dead but they're in the cosmic realm now, Scotland Yard pursues unicorn, tipped off and they find June.
It doesn'tcome together cohesively and in a way it's a bit disappointing because I'm enjoying the show otherwise.
With the finale only getting 22 minutes it's obvious shit like what happened with Otto is being saved as a hook for season 2.
Probably, I don't see them resolving whatever's happening in the cosmic realm until s2 either. I just wish we got more scotland yard shenanigans while they were still London.

The finale's going to be about The Evil trying to erase time itself or something, but that's a problem that arose from The Evil cramming itself into Seng's eyes in episode 9; it's a brand-new situation that doesn't really have anything to do with anything that came before.
It's a brand new situation because Unicorn never fricked up as hard as they've done now by letting it get into Seng.
But it has nothing to do with Otto or what The Evil was doing in that jungle, or what the fox lady was doing or why she was doing it. The only thing we know about her is that she isn't The Evil.
I view the situation and events like this:

He wants a Rakshasa so one just shows up and becomes an important side character.
It worked with his more episodic shows but you need to keep things coherent in a longer narrative or things will seem jarring and out of place

I'm of the opinion genndy should stick to action/comedy and not bother trying to juggle romance/family style plots. They're clearly not his forte and feelings are something a lot of media fricks up in general. He should have stuck to his strengths. Adding emotional beats without committing proper time to them is just bogging down the content. None of the themes get enough devotion as a result. It seems like he struggles to be coherent enough as it is just with action and adventure themes. I have some experience in the field and I think a story like this would be absolute torture to try and write in 9 episodes. I wouldn't willingly subject myself to trying that.
He sometimes seems to lose interest in doing series plots and starts doing jokes. After the excessive "this is the worst possible threat ever for all time" line from Merlin, the muscial crash reaction shots went on so long they became comical, especially since it ended on Copernicus, who does not have a facial expression.
The same thing happened in one of the pirate ship epsiodes in Primal season 2; it suddenly started doing comedy beats.
He seems heavily distracted in general. We spent an entire flashback about a cool fight in the jungle vs ottos forces, with no apparent rhyme or reason. Only to find that the evil, which had been almost defeated already, possessed Merlin for the first time ever somehow. The logic is bizarre at best and nonexistent at worst. Then juggle that with the intersecting subplots of romance love triangles, flashbacks about characters trying to develop them. And now the cosmic realm, where original Seng was seen running off into the distance in like episode 2 never to be seen again. It's all just loose ends and being distracted. Unicorn Loose Ends Eternal.

It's not the most empty, shallow and edgy show ever but generally shows become like that after we got to meet the characters and grow comfortable with them
Last episode they showed how legolass met phoenix and I feel better about them after watching it, why did they wait 9 episodes for that? It was 9 episodes of watching them fight non stop

I think the intention was the viewer was supposed to question Edred's word and see him as an entitled prig at the start of the series. He's in denial that Melinda's changed, he let her fall into dangerous situations because she's supposed to be capable of handling them herself, he yells at her when she gets things wrong, etc. But then he just gets sadder as the season progresses when Emmelinda really doesn't remember/doesn't want to talk about it when she does, he has to see her prefer another man, and then FINALLY in ep 9 he's like "yeah this isn't Melinda this is someone else entirely". He's finally, reluctantly, acknowleding that whatever this change is it's likely permanent. And then you get the flashback (which is probably going to continue in the next episode) and you see he was (probably) telling the truth and that they really did love each other.
But they're lovey-dovey in the prologue.
Ok yeah I forgot about the prologue. Then the flashback is about turning up the angst. Now the viewer actually feels bad for him as he sexily angsts without a shirt on. Edred's reflecting on their relationship for what could be a few different reasons.

Right it feels like they've crammed quite a lot into the last few episodes, including some development and interactions between the characters that probably would helped if introduced a bit earlier throughout the show.
The first two episodes are way too sluggish, and then the next two cover the same beats as each other for the most part.
I don't mind the first two starting off slow as it's setting some of the story but out of the two I think ep1 desperately needed some better pacing.

I like the show, the art and concepts are really cool, but the pacing is all over the place and the story doesn't even really make sense.
Why do they all need to "reincarnate throughout time" when they're all shown to be immortal/long lived anyway? Merlin was chillin in a basement for 1000 years so we can assume Melinda wouldn't age either, the elves act like no time at all has passed, Copernicus is a robot and Seng is a monk that exists outside of time and space.
It just seems like they did it for the forced plot element of them taking over other people's bodies and getting stuck, which is arguably one of the weakest parts of the show. It just seems so weird they took an oath to keep body swapping throughout the ages and yet literally everyone from their OG times is still just around and completely fine.

It reminds me of Boo Boo Goes Wild or Thief and the Cobbler, a masterwork done by an extremely talented artisan that's at the peak of their field but it is ultimately ONLY for the guy making it and we're all just along for the ride.

I can only speak for myself but I think it spent too much time on episodic monster of the week fights and generic John Hughes high school cloches and not enough time with the much more interesting myth arc. Like, in the time Lana is spending crying about how there isn't a vegan option for school lunch a few more thousand people on her homeworld probably died. Genndy set up an interesting premise and then couldn't get away from that premise fast enough.
As a fish-out-of-water premise I think the stuff done in the "exile" setting (earth) is going to predominate, and the alien planet stuff is the main plot for the whole series which will only see a handful of major movements in the whole series. Since there was only one season it doesn't spend much time on it.
If anything I think UWE is an unsatisfying jumble at least partly because it isn't (can't?) take the time to let the characters "stretch" in danger-of-the-week style episodes.

I understand that. I merely disagree that it was a good decision. Like, there used to be this old image about shows that got their endings cut prematurely and SBT was on it as "galaluna will never be freed" and to me it always rang hollow because the point of the show never actually seemed to be to free galalaluna, it was to do 1980s school dance nonsense.
And for the record this isn't just a Genndy thing. I think Young Justice suffers from this problem as well where they seem to want to have their cake of a myth arc with deep lore and a looming but then also want to faff about doing teenage relationship drama bullshit.

People say this but then when I ask if they remember anything about the show it's just the redhead with the square ass twerking for the square robot.
I remember the robot character being surprisingly full of personality in general when I thought he'd be a "bleep bloop this action will result in a 12% increased chance of success for our mission" kind of thing.
Lance is a edgy grump played straight but that's fine it didn't become cringy.
Octus and Kimmy's weird relationship was a highlight, but the show had a lot of awesome things going for it. It just had a fun-in-general pastiche on High School life, with things like the the dorky-but-fun kids that were into Ilana and Lance, the "but I was meant to be the main character!" ex-boyfriend of kimmy, the jocks, etc.
The giant robot battles were kino more often than not.
The villains were interesting and fun to watch - you WANTED to know what had happened to the main villain to make him turn evil. It seemed pretty clear that the Earth Force was linked to Lance's dad, possibly run by him, and you wanted to know more.
It was fun, and it seemed like all the parts fit together and there was some larger picture.
Unicorn is a stream of consciousness in comparison. I no longer feel like there's a big picture where everything we've seen is a piece of a puzzle. Stuff like "Otto, the dude that built all the robots in this steampunk setting" don't matter for more than an ep. I'll watch it through to the end for the animation, but it's not in the same league as Titan for writing... and Titan was well-written enough but hardly a 10/10 in that category either. It's just that Unicorn is down at like a 3/10 (with those few points entirely in terms of some characters being enjoyable as long as you don't want things to make sense).
Both Titan and Unicorn suck shit for different reasons.

Before the final blow is struck, the Evil makes a gamble to release Morgan to use her as bait. While Unicorn is distracted, the Evil tries to kidnap Melinda and become one with her again. Morgan intervenes, and it manages to capture only Emma instead.

I'm pretty sure the actual show they're writing for isn't that good, which tells you everything you need to know about the fanfiction.
The show not being rather cohesive is one of the main criticism about the show here actually.

Helluva Boss is far more coherent than Unicorn, and holy shit that's a weird thing to say. HB has some rough edges and there are bits where you go "oh, changed your mind a couple eps later, huh?"
Unicorn is stream of consciousness where all sorts of things show up abruptly or terminate in an unsatisfactory way.
That's kind of why I said there's slightly different reasons behind why they're both wastes of potential, writing wise.

I thought they did, just that their writers/boarders stuck too much 'to the motions' of everything else to get any real mileage off their ideas. At least HB's art direction/designs is what keeps me watching it.

I wouldn't call HB a waste. It's an indy production very much driven by a relative newbie to the industry. The lack of polish is to be expected. With Genndy finally getting to air something he's apparently been working on for ages... well you expect coherency from a pro being given free rein with a dream project he's been dabbling with for a while.
Most of his projects never have coherency; it's always throwing shit to the wall and seeing what sticks.
Also Viv isn't indie anymore so she has no excuse either. They're both just hacks.

A24 is covering Hazbin I thought, with HB still funded through advertising, crowdfunding and merch
Taking that into account, I'd say she's still kinda indie. I'm still happy she's found success, even if her work became less and less my thing from a writing standpoint (which I could say about a lot of creators, tbf).

You should get used to hearing all sorts of things get listed as being more coherent than Unicorn. It's pretty much as much a collection of half-baked ideas as most of Shirow's lesser-known works. Reminds me a bit of Jodorowsky.
