>unironically convinces (considerably poorer than her) best friend to go to fricking art school in 2002 just so she can maintain the codependent grasp she has on her
>show depicts this as a good thing
genuinely baffling

What’s wrong with art school?
you have to be 18 or over to post here
Shut up
You've got it wrong, a poster like that is more likely a legit boomer who never clued into the ways the world has changed.
Or a 19 year old who wants to get into art school?
You stupid frick
>a legit boomer who never clued into the ways the world has changed.
Boomers are the ones who tell you not to go. Except for the ones who work at one.
Art school only use is to help you flip burgers faster
How would you get connections in a pre-internet world?
>show takes place in a post-internet world
>the internet existed so it must of been standard for everyone to use
You fricking moron
Seriously you are fricking moronic
That would imply Art School actually has a practical use.
it makes the worst type of rejects
Depends on the artschool.
As someone who went to art school, it's a scam.
Modern art schools are basically expensive babysitting where upper class people can send their kids to keep them distracted for a few years. Art schools no longer bother to drill proper draftsmanship into your head, because they get your money whether or not you learn anything.
Additionally, because of this mindset, the actual administration will do nothing to help you. Sure, many of the teachers are great, and you can get a great education if you apply yourself, but going through it you'll see SO many young adults who are just scraping by with the bare minimum because the staff can't be bothered.
You're mainly there just to try to desperately network as much as you can before you finish your degree.
it gives you a literal bs degree
a degree that gives you the skills to
BULL SHIT anything into art
1) LOOK like an artist
2) SOUND like an artist
3) KNOW what your client(s) WANT
4) PROVIDE whatever history, culture, and story to give that art piece, art negative space, act, movement, social/economical/medical statement MEANING
5) SHOWCASE that piece of art, whatever it is/isn't and make it worth something
6) Give EVERYONE WATCHING YOU your heartfelt STARVING ARTIST/LUNATIC/HERO/VILLIAN backstory so your art sells
No one that does the art scene usually buys art from Greg who has a steady job/income, who has no medical problems, who has a loving wife and kids, and doesn't have a DEEP alcohol/drug/dead family member(s), survivor of an accident, member of a political(s) movement(s), etc etc
and a degree shows you have been vetted by a financial institute aka college aka school how to make officially recognized art. finding out you paid millions for a scrap iron collection randomly made by an electrical storm hitting an scrap iron yard doesn't have OFFICIAL art power; though it has a better backstory than most.
what?
As someone who went to calarts, it was a lot cheaper in 2002. Average art school now is like 50k a year, in the early 00’s it was probably 20k.
>as someone who went to calarts
at least going to animation school is a bit smarter than going to a liberal arts school. Animation promises a stable salary with benefits at the very least
It's rich kid daycare.
I don't think art school is the issue here Anon...
If it’s about money then I don’t care and don’t ducking reply to me you stupid fricking worm.
it rapes your bank account
It fricking sucks at making artists. To do well all you have to do is find out what your teachers like and do exactly that. It's the most soullessly conformist place in existence, compounded by the fact that they bend over backwards to seem hip and free spirited.
I know a ton of professional artists who do stuff like concept art for video games and commercials (and they are fricking good), and half of them never went to art school, and most of the half that did either said that it was a waste of time or flunked out.
The only kind of art school that is useful is the conservatory, and architecture school because even though it sucks as well, you need a licence to do that shit.
To become good at art you have to grind it like crazy, not smoke weed and rant about the establishment.
If you go over to /ic/ they will tell you the same thing.
> To do well all you have to do is find out what your teachers like and do exactly that.
I think this is related to
>Art schools no longer bother to drill proper draftsmanship into your head
When I think "Draftsman", Gerhard immediately comes to mind. The thing is, this sort of work is something you can be fairly objective about. You either can deal with rendering a very complex shape with what I think is two point perspective or you can't. Your anatomy is correct or it isn't.
You abandon these kind of hard skills, the only basis to evaluate a work is feeling. And invariably people feel good when you flatter them, and you flatter them best by imitating them.
unless you are rich and have a support network that includes people in the art business is a massive scam, and even if you do, is still a scam, you are just buying your ticket so you can open an art gallery because you are not going to make it as an artist. Jane was a poorgay and daria probably ruined her life.
MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY
>t. female (male)
Moron
That's pretty acurate to female friendships.
accurate depictions of bad things don’t change how confusing it is when you depict those bad things as good somehow
do women really?
unfortunately yes
I have a older sister... Yes, the answer is yes
males with sisters are some of the most horrible males on the planet. coddled perverts that deserve a bullet in their heads
male suicide stats make me laugh so hard every time i read your fat genetic waste losers bullshit here
men kill their friends though. google "man kills friend" and it always some shit about males shooting their friends because they took a french frie from them or some shit
men deserve to die though so men killing other men is a good thing and hilarious
All teen dramas and shows are secretly advertisements for the American university scam. They present is as being there is no other option then going in to debt and going to college, and they act like trades are for losers. Really it's the opposite.
>t. tradecuck
Enjoy your back at age 50.
Sitting at a desk all day isn’t any better for your body and health, to be fair.
Do you think trades are all construction? Electricians and plumbers are not doing physically demanding shit. No more than people working stocking or cleaning shit.
>plumbers are not doing physically demanding shit
Try carrying a mountable radiator or a bathtub to the last floor of a house with your hands. People often forget that plumbers sometimes have to place all that stuff in. Proper retort to "lol, you're killing your health" is "yes, so you have a rooftop over your head"
Just bought a lumbar support pillow, feels great honestly. Hope I'm not too late.
You don't need to go to college to make 250k a year coding at Google, anon.
This is the dumbest right wing meme and will leave you struggling or broke for most of your life while your friends who got degrees for profitable careers soar ahead and smash pussy
>all the seething lefties with useless degrees in the replies
Shit, I guess he’s right...
Daria can do no wrong
unironically the biggest problem in the show
??? Daria is consistently portrayed as kind of a bad person.
when does she face any actual consequences?
>didn't get accepted into her boyfriends fancy college caused she fricked up the interview
>lost her friendship with jane for a good while after stealing her boyfriend
>friends like jodie call her out on her bullshit
>didn't get the wizard college grant cause she messed up the interview being her cynical self
I'm sure there are more but I haven't seen the show in a while, but daria often gets shit on for her attitude
>daria didn’t even want to get into tom’s school; raft was her first pick and she literally breaks up with him because he relies on nepotism
>friendship with jane is only rocky for two episodes and a tv movie nobody watched
>when jodie does, she’s usually in the wrong or both of them are equally wrong (see bank loan episode)
>the scholarship episode is literally about sticking to your morals; jodie and chuck also don’t get it because they were suck-ups
yeah the show totally isn’t written around her always being correcf
Daria was a supremely toxic dipshit to Jane who kept holding her back for the first 5 seasons of the show, so at least they stuck the landing for the finale and kept her as a manipulative c**t for character continuity reasons.
name one (1) event where daria was intentionally manipulative
…The situation in the OP?
Except Daria never “manipulates” Jane, she just says she should at least apply.
>B-but muh lesbians!
What is it with dykes and glorifying toxicity and codependency?
That time Jane wanted to join the track team but Daria guild tripped her into staying as a Contrarian outsider.
>complains about daria “holding jane back”
>OP complaining about daria pushing jane to get a higher education
you homosexuals are so fickle
Step aside, Diarrhea! We have white privilege!
How would Daria react to being told she has white privilege
>there’s an entire plot in the actual show about this
The bank loan one? I wouldn’t say that counts
>jodie implies she’s only being turned down on account of her race
>namedrops her dad to succeed
>shows that status is more important than race
>daria calls her a hypocrite
maybe it wouldn’t count if you’ve only seen the show in gif form
That’s not really addressing Daria’s inherent advantages and the fact that you need to be rich already just for a bank loan speaks for Jodie’s disadvantages
Both Jodie and Daria come from upper middle class families
Yeah but Daria doesn’t have to bring it up just to get a loan
She genuinely looks so out of place with the clashing art styles and I’m assuming it’s unintentionally?
She always looked like that
Left is obviously based more on her Daria (the show) design.
Yeah, that's what I was about to post. Daria there looks like Daria from her show. She's in a mildly different art style.
She switched to the leather jacket later in the show.
I think they altered her design well before the show. Like the one where Buzzcut was trying to teach them how to swim has a noticeably different looking Daria if I remember right.
To be fair, even the main duo look out of place in comparison to the rest of the supporting cast
I thought Beavis and Butt-head themselves ended up looking out-of-place compared to the designs of all the other characters. It's even a plot-point in that movie; some characters mistake the boys for an alien species.
>Winger
isnt that the hyperdick futa furry dude that died?
Nah, just a band that Mike Judge assumed was for lame wiener kids who can't fit in, and because Stewart and his family love that band in the show, the actual band suffered for it. He admitted later that he didn't know that they were actually a decent band.
Art school still seemed like a viable career path in 2002 for certain people. Hindsight is golden but they couldn't have known just how fricked things would get in just a few years when that was all being written.
This, the early 00s were basically the last time where having a college degree actually meant something. Thread is full of zoomers.
As long as you graduated and managed to get a job before the 2008 financial disaster.
Except at other times the show called out the greediness of American universities and joked about debt because people were conscious of it at the time because that’s when it was becoming the crisis it is today. But of course this awareness was abandoned when it was more convenient to have a plot essentially saying “well you still have to go”.
Stop complaining or I’m going to find Doug and bring him out of retirement
That was the word I was looking for! Daria and Jane are "codependent." Thank you!
Were the Lane’s actually implied to be poor? Weren’t they always traveling?
actual backpacking doesn’t cost that much
daria was not a good person
I think most people understood this
>daria was not a good person
"good" is subjective. I think she was really just naive and too smart for her own good.
t. piece of shit that identifies with Daria
>I think she was really just naive and too smart for her own good.
Wasn't her whole deal being the smartest and most down-to-earth?
how would beavis and butthead fit in lawndale ?
Daria dragging down her more socially competent friend Jane is a recurring theme in that show.
She was the only good girl in the show. She has a big heart and cares about people. If she found a smart boyfriend and not a deadbeat like Kevin, she would be med school material.
Agreed, and she showed hidden depths at times that indicate she is smarter than she lets on. And smarter than Daria and Jane give her credit for.
Jane is fine to go to art school,
Jane has legitimate talent and ability (and so avoids the meme that you go to art school to learn how to draw, when in reality you go to develop existing skills and build links). She'd be fine at art school.
If Jane had no talent and ability she'd be fricked.
I don't think Janes poor. Her family just isn't around. There's an episode their gazebo breaks and they pay construction workers to fix it, the construction workers realize they're working for kids and slack off most the episode.
except the point of the episode was that Jane had to make knock-off paintings and sell them to afford it, because they couldn’t repair it otherwise?
I think it was because they didn't want their parents to find out they destroyed the naming gazebo, even if you're rich, your parents will question you if there's 3k missing from their account
I know a guy who went to art school and now he does regular exhibits and some of his work has been in small museums
he went to MassArt and graduated 2011, originally from Waltham
I know a guy who got in because he's literally moronic and got picked for diversity reasons.
>went to animation school
>there was one super autistic kid
>he drew like a 5 year old, imagine peppa pig but worse
>would have meltdowns if you mentioned a cartoon he didn't like
>his art never got better
>still graduated
the school was at least good since they did teach us technical stuff and we all got jobs in animation afterwards (except the autist)
He does have decent skills, he mostly draws from model which isn't so bad. He's just really obnoxious on social media when he isn't posting his work.
