There are a lot of on the nose jokes that just don't land. They try too hard to relate to reddit humor to fit the new zoomer audience rather than sticking to the darker millennial humor.
Anyone else feel like the newer seasons just feel kind of "small?" Maybe it's because it lacks that first time wonder of watching the show for the first time, but the show world feels infinitely more tiny when they just re-use the same like 10 people in the background and everything feels too hyperfocused on the main characters. I never get the sense they're part of a bigger world or setting, it's just moving from setpiece to setpiece.
its because they barely have a plot and there's too much going on. they have like 4 stories going on at once just strung together by jokes. after an episode of the new season i don't think i can actually articulate what it was about outside of a generality. that bitcoin one was a confusing mess for each plot. it doesn't feel like a world anymore, it seems to be just moving around characters as set pieces for types of jokes.
Yeah that makes sense, I haven't watched the newest stuff, just the last newer season after the movies and it wouldn't surprise me if this next revival had the same problem. Overall something just feels really off somehow.
i suspect they started to write the jokes first, rather then the story. one reason i think this is true is because groening basically stopped being so involved after season 4 according to himself and a few others, and he always has these rules about when you're allowed to push jokes past the drama, and its obvious its lacking these structural things.
an easy example is his rules for homer strangling bart having to be impulsive because otherwise it ruins the character. might seem like a little nitpick, but its crucial. he had like 100 of these things because he's always been concerned with making stuff exist in some kind of reality.
post movie futurama doesn't really care about making character stories. probably why groenings least favorite simpsons ep was the skinner/fake skinner one. it had lots of good jokes but it kind of shits on everything else
you're giving matt groening too much credit.
his involvement on the simpsons was limited, he was even banned from the writing room because his humor was way too surreal for the show's direction. early seasons were sam simon's show.
he was way more involved in futurama but his actual input on the scripts is very small

he still had these hard-lines that were important. i don't think matt is some great writer or anything, but his pushbacks were meaningful, and he was more involved in futurama as you say. Sam is also not entirely reliable because he famously didn't care if it lasted where matt did. matt had some conception of characters needing to adhere to some strictness and he had the power to do so
Fry is just Bart, but 10 years older. It's the logical evolution of a character that already had years of development put into it. No shit it's easy to make a good character when you're standing on the shoulders of a giant, even more so when you made the giant and know all its inner machinations.
Frick no. Fry is a no-worries dumb slob, Bart is a clever prankster
I simp for she
The "every episode is a sequel of the previous episode" format killed this show. It should have followed the usual "everything goes back to normal at the end of the episode" format
its really just the pacing of the show. there's really odd moments where a scene lingers after a punchline, and it never commits to being a full story or loosely tied together episodes. its got one foot in and one foot out.
the whimsy is inconsistent too, it should have been full sword and sorcery but it has a lot of cutesy fairytale shit as well which doesn't fit because its not being super silly all of the time. you're never exactly sure what its going for. had potential, and some great ideas, but it either needed to be a sitcom or an adventure, and it was never gonna work as a sitcom
you need more than 3 characters for that. it would have to be structured different. it could have worked but not really from what they had. the side characters were very one dimensional. the setting lent itself to quests. futurama had the whole delivery company things that allowed them to have short adventures but they kind of ran out of ways to do that as well.
futurama should have also dipped into more of a 'lost in space' type deal when they ended the movies
I liked the queen before she turned into some pirate marysue feminist fantasy.
Futurama didn't use its premise enough. Too many episodes about hanging out in the city, they really could have gone full star trek if they wanted to, but I guess Groening prefers satire to straight-up dumb humor

when groening had more involvement it had more adventures. David x Cohen also liked to lift star trek stories. i think after the 4th season neither of them seemed especially involved. Groening always has some weird rules writers need to work around but i think it makes for better stuff when he's in the writers room so idk. i'd be surprised if he ever showed up to work in the hulu reboot at all. early on, the reason they didn't utilize their setting enough was because Fox wanted it to resemble the simpsons so thats where you got those grounded plots.
A guy who isn't dumb, but is just lazy and always chooses having a good time. He would be the perfect compliment to Bender. A guy who isn't the leader in most shenanigans, and knows they should be focusing, but goes along with it anyway. It would also make Leela and his relationship stronger. She compliments his lack of focus, by keeping him in check. That would change the dynamics a lot if Fry just wasn't a dumbass.
its fine for fry to be dumb, its just how dumb he becomes where the problem lies. Fry being stupid is an effect of his personality of not really being too worried about whats going on. the slurm factory is prime fry. problem is, as time went on he became more of a background character for some reason, so things written for him were just dumb guy jokes since he wasn't central to anything happening and it kind of solidified him to what he is now
They seemed like they made him dumber of time, he was kind of dumb in the first season but it was more just being lazy/whatever about things than anything else. He's straight up moronic in the newer seasons.
It's very simple: in today's pozzed climate, if you make a male loser a likeable character then you are supporting le evil altright incels.
They need to show that he's a dumb guy but NOT an incel or else the ~~*stockholders*~~ get scared

I wish they didn't force moronic dynamics between characters. I hate how the most common dynamics are confident party guy and apprehensive borderline nagging sidekick. I wish they highlighted more real life dynamics.

“not my problem” personified
I remember that promo in 1999 where Matt draws Fry on a pane oof glass to introduce him to the audience.
its just a special show
Is the new season actually good?
No.
Elaborate or you didn't watch it and are just making an ebic snarky reply

It's okay. Doesn't really hit most of the time, but it still feels like Futurama.

you have schizophrenia

honestly so much better than Simpsons, the closest thing to a cartoon seinfeld too

Bart is much more of a hell raiser than Fry would've been, also Fry is a bigger nerd
bart is also more meanspirited
Not really. He's shown a lot of remorse when he goes too far.
Frick no. Fry is a no-worries dumb slob, Bart is a clever prankster

It would be fine if there were actual jokes.

You kiddin? Futurama but middle ages. Would have worked fine

Very nice. Let's see Bender's shiny metal ass...

I wish Fry wasn't blatantly moronic if he was at least near bart simpson IQ he would be more relatable.
newer seasons just turned him into a little kid

He was a fricking loser when that show came out. Oh how far we have fallen.
This
Fry was supposed to be a loser not a sex haver
