People at times really overestimate how much an "executive producer" does at times with a show. Savino was still the fricking primary showrunner. Genndy was already done with Dexter since 1999 and was busier producing Samurai Jack to care much about what the frick Savino was doing with the reboot.
It was CN that wanted the revival and it was CN that decided to put Savino in charge of it. It was still Savino that picked his crew of artists and writers. The biggest blame you can put on Genndy for the abysmal seasons is that he didn't care for it anymore - which he had been pretty clear about as he moved on to PPG and SJ.

Cheyenne Curtis and a few others just ganged up on him and used their friends in the industry (mainly Rebecca Sugar, Hirsch, and Daron Nefcy sounded the trumpets on their twitter. Boy Hirsch was awfully quiet on "harassment in the industry" when Roiland's thing happened btw... but I digress) to leverage against him and when that failed they used that slimeball Amid Amidi to make a false story go public and forced his firing. When the animation guild had their show trial, Savino wasn't even allowed to speak, Cheyenne and the other accusers shouted over him, and they were praised by media for being stunning and brave for it... but that doesn't sound like a fair trial nor the actions of people without something to hide.
But Savino was kind of stupid for his defense. He made the number #1 crucial mistake of apologizing (in fact, it wasn't even really an apology for anything, but was near enough and timed enough to be construed by his enemies as such) and his defense was doomed from the start. My guess is he was more focused on saving his marriage at that point.
Savino should've gotten a lawyer and tried to sue them. You never give up and apologize in a situation like this. You have to fight back and prove your innocence
