Not usually at all. Maybe if the character's relationship has been built up correctly and the sex scene resolves that phase of it. Vast majority are meaningless while adding nothing to the story except as a gimmick. It's like a monster/antagonist reveal or death can be great if tension is built up right, but usually it's just a cheap jump scare or excuse to show gore.
Women like sex scenes because they always flatter them and link the plot to back to sex (what they relate everything to). Someone post the image of that graph showing women 18-34 and 35-50 are much more likely to watch a movie if they can expect a sex scene. I don't have it.
