Yeah, i get that they want to do Tangle and Whisper stuff, but having Sonic show Tangle the ropes for a few issues would be cool. Especially if there's lessons on bantering with enemies and striking dramatic poses.
Very original, lots of options for contrasting designs. You've got 3 mammals, an insect, and a lizard. Maybe swap out one of the mammals for an aquatic creature? I'm assuming the beetle can fly so you won't need a bird.
God I wish I had saved the edit people made of Sonic as Donovan forcing himself on Guts as Elias.
Ironclad beetles gave up flight for indestructibility. They cannot be stomped to death and will survive being run over by most cars. Their shells form an interlock that reinforces itself the more pressure is applied. The downside is that they have no offensive capabilities. When threatened. They tuck their legs and antennae into their armor and hope whatever is bothering them can't swallow them whole.
Ah, that makes sense. Pretty cool! Also didn't realize salamanders were amphibians, I must've been thinking of iguanas or something. I'm actually a huge fan of axolotls, it'd be cool to see one have the power to switch between water and land forms. There's almost no axolotl mobians so you'd end up with a pretty unique design. You could have one of the mammals be an improbable flyer like Tails is.
No worries! And yeah, I was thinking of an axolotl specifically but had previously gotten negative feedback regarding them. So far the dynamic I had in mind is:
>Zorilla is the "muscle" of the group. They are basically the tenrec to a skunk's hedgehog. Convergent evolution. Chemical attacks, but mainly gets by via intimidation.
>Sable is the charmer. Super flexible, escape artist.
>Vischacha is the eldest and closer to "team grandma/grandpa" than team mom/dad. They're not grey in the whiskers but have a much older personality than the rest.
>Salamander/Axolotl is their personality foil, given the neoteny of the species. Airheaded and childish (for better or worse). Can get by in land or water. Axolotls can naturally recover from even having their spines broken, so this one's a bit clumsy (slips and falls are pretty low-risk injuries, so they often get bumps and bruises that heal up by day's end).
>Ironclad Beetle is a bit of the opposite of Axolotl's squishy-but-regenerative build. They are basically bulletproof but would be completely put out of commission by the things that do manage to get around their defenses (low tolerance to chemical weaponry, and acoustic weapons, for example). Despite being such a tank, they're slight in stature and very conflict averse, almost cowardly. In a pinch, Zorilla will pick them up and use Ironclad's virtually indestructible body as a club (willing or not).
Yeah I saw that, sthg's not the friendliest place for constructive criticism. If you like them, I'd say go for it. The gill fronds are pretty iconic, and would be nice to see them unfurl when going underwater.
These all sound great, and have a lot of opportunities for cool interactions.

Yeah, I think giving the beetle a greater support role could work well. It even makes sense given their dislike of actually being caught in the fray. I imagine they're more single-discipline in their tech abilities than the oodles of general-purpose tech geniuses in the setting. I think they'd either be a vehicles specialist (the team has no speed type or flying support) or a strategist, but it's possible that Viscacha is the team strategist instead given their more advisor-like role.
Cool! That was an issue with Antoine in the original cartoon, he didn't like fighting, but didn't have much to add to the team otherwise. Yeah, I don't think they'd need to be Tails/Rotor-level, just be competent in a specific field. Vehicles would be good, we don't get enough cool vehicles in Sonic since he doesn't really need them. having the Viscacha as the strategist would be good, since you could have the salamander/axolotl interrupting/messing up the plans by just rushing in.
It's all sounding really fun. They're robust enough to be an official or clandestine team, mercenaries, treasure hunters or bounty hunters.

Yeah, that's probably what I was thinking about Pliny the Elder probably isn't the most reliable source of information anymore. I was sure they had something to do with fire. Now that I think about it, Chaos was probably based on (non-mythological) salamanders. It is a watery lizard thing goes through a number of growth stages.

I don't want him to be an invincible Mary Sue, but he was created to be immortal specifically so that Gerald could find a cure for Maria, and is partly alien to boot. If anyone's biology could stave off the virus, logically it would be Shadow's. I wouldn't be against the effort hindering him, though. His immune system would still burn energy.
He’s created to be ageless immortal, not immune to every disease. Presumably studying him would’ve allowed Gerald to stop Maria’s body from deteriorating, but Shadow’s never been said to be immune against all diseases.
There was that old thing about being immune to viruses and getting a bacterial infectoin. NIDS is a virus, given the name.
There would be no point in studying Shadow if his biology couldn't fend off Maria's disease and potentially repair the damage.

So he was talking shit on the IDW #50 cover not having Sonic on it and being too expensive (he's a boomer and doesn't know about variant covers or that inflation's a thing). I wanted to see what art he's been working on. Pic related is a cover he recently did and he's still able to make Sonic look fricking terrifying. I'd say more, but it's clear whoever hired him did it as a joke.

I was expecting something far more horrifying. It's not a masterpiece, but it's nowhere near as frightening as some of his other art.
He should just drop the whole Sonic thing and turn all his characters into actual humans. That Eggman and the cartoon kids don't look too bad. The problems occur mainly when he's blending animal and human characteristics together.

What you expect? Ironically Starline being trashed is the point of his character.
He talks about the “Sonic cycle” ad verbatim. Admires his predecessor but grows to hate him for faults, thinks he can do better and makes his own recolored OCs to prove it, yet falls into all the same traps as he does nonetheless, and worse.
He’s a joke about fanwriters and critics, thinking they can do better than the weiters with their OCs. Being destroyed by Eggman is the narrative behind his character. This is his most fitting end.

Well Amy would never have been a semi-replacement for Sally and maybe israeliteel wouldn't have been created or given the role later on. The more I think about it, the more I'd want it.
Turning Elise into Sally is the same problem with doing it to Amy. Both fans will still complain about Elise being turned into Sally rather than just bringing her back. That's even assuming Sega would want to acknowledge Elise again afterwards. Didn't even bring up the shit-pping wars.
Thing is, people care about Amy. Assuming Elise wasn't a human smooching on Sonic, she's still attached to Sonic 06. And it would be a coin flip if Sega would allow her to come back. As for shipping, despite her being Sonic's love interest briefly, Sega would still have the "Sonic can't be in a relationship" mandate in place. Or they would've pushed for it because it's a character from a game and they might've found a way to use her again in future games. With Sega it's hard to figure them out and we're talking about a what-if spanning 17 years.
If Elise didn't make much of an impact in story as a human, I doubt much would've cared for her anyway as a hedgehog/bird/whatever.

Doubt, they don't like to put too much emphasis on relationships. Or at least, they like to pick and choose what they like (Vector's crush on Vanilla coming from X), anyone but Sonic apparently.
I headcanon that Sega hates relationships because their attempt blew up in their face. They got roasted over Sonic and Elise with many labeling it bestiality. No company wants that attached to them and any further attempts might bring it back up. And Sega is petty as frick so if they can't do it then no one can.
Is it weird to feel that Sonic x Amy would seem like a more serious possibility if she traded in the skirt for pants? Something along the lines her Sonic Riders outfit maybe.

Does IDW actually suck? I heard someone ranting about them in an old TMNT thread.
IDW isn't bad. It's fine. The problem is that it's kind of bland and directionless after a while. But a lot of people like it.
Honestly, it sucks. The focus is on a bunch of OCs like Tangle and Whisper, so the actual canon Sonic characters seem like underdeveloped guest stars in their own comic. The Metal Virus arc is overlong and grimdark to the point of parody, everything else is by-the-numbers filler, and the pacing is actually pretty slow, which is ironic for a Sonic comic.
That said, the quality seems to be steadily improving, so it could get more readable as it goes on. But we're on issue 50 already and overall I'm not that impressed.
There's really no way around the OCs, since game characters aren't allowed to have arcs or experience any actual consequences, and the precarious position of the writers as essentially expendable outsourced labor makes them even less willing to push boundaries
Whether it's Sega fricking it up with mandates, or the writers fricking it up with bad writing, the fact remains that the comic is a dull slog.
I'd take Archie's insanity over the nothing-ventures of nobody-worth-caring-about anyday. At least you could laugh at Archie.

Yeah, late/Reboot Archie had some serious potential. Unfortunately it spent all its time worldbuilding and got cancelled.
It's pretty meh. I liked Issue 50 but only because Eggman got to shine and seemed like his post-breakdown Archie self.
The comic's fine, but the company is in even worse shape than Archie. They've lost major licenses and sales have not been good. There's also been a lot of delays on IDW Sonic issues.
It's mostly pretty bad, but Issue 50 was genuinely enjoyable (ignoring Sonic being a psychopath that is). The company itself is in dire fricking straits though.
IDW going under and the comic going to another publisher would be a good excuse for another reboot. Preferably so that the universe is not based on Sonic Forces of all games.
The only publishers even on the table (or at least, the only ones that could take it and not instantly make it total shit) are Dark Horse and Image. And Image no longer takes outside licenses, so Dark Horse it is. And there's no guarantee either that say, Ian and Evan will come back if IDW goes under and another reboot happens.
Frankly, there's no excuse for SOA just moving it in-house and sticking to digital and TPB if IDW goes under. They could still employ the writers and artists as freelancers.

Honestly, given that Sonic fans have been pushing for just random character interactions between the game cast and pointless fight sequences over long plots and story arcs, I'd argue that they should starting moving things in-house & just make the same type of stories that the annuals where doing but in trades.
The games universe doesn't have enough material to create a sustainable ongoing without using OCs, but they have enough to keep making annual graphic novels (including even game adaptations)
That way, you have a better chance at sustained quality by controlling the pacing & the comics can reach the actual demographic SEGA wants: dumb kids who rather be reading the manga section than touch a filthy comic book.

If Fronteirs succeeds, it might actually prompt Sega to get their shit together regarding the franchise and not just toss out any and all worldbuilding each time their attempts fail.

Most people that like Sonic will probably really enjoy it. It's got great art. I think a lot of Archiegays find it's softened the edges too much and it's "lesser" in most ways.
I think that's a reasonable assessment. The number of OCs would have still annoyed me but I wouldn't have had any better yard stick to measure IDW against.
