Wait anon, are you implying this comic is not there how based, manly and free Alderode is and that Cresce is a pathetic commie feminist shithole?

                Anonymous

The author of the comic has quite literally said she'd much rather live in Cresce than Alderode, though she's not particularly fond of either of them as a place to live

                Anonymous

Cope lies. We all know she'd choose a little bolthole in Sharteshane to conduct her nefarious business from.

                Anonymous

If you've ever lived in a city where there's a legitimate threat of a mugging, homeless everywhere, and everything is controlled by the mafia you would put up with everything bad about Cresce and Alderode over that. You have no idea how good good pickpockets are.

Seriously, there's nothing worse in life than walking the streets and having to watch your back the whole fricking time paranoid. Or living in a place with literal human and animal shit on the streets. Yes, Cresce keeps its streets clean but all the positives that reflects way offsets communism with slavery when you have to compare to Sharteshane's negative aspects that cannot keep its streets clean.

It really makes me wonder how awful the pymary schools are outside of Alderode and Cresce. I imagine it's so fricking undisciplined in those countries that it doesn't even come anywhere close to being a nuclear terrorist threat like it would be in our world.

                Anonymous

I doubt there are any "proper" pymary schools outside Alderode and Cresce to be honest.

                Anonymous

I treat pyrmary instructors like I do nuclear weapons scientists and wonder how or why they would leave Alderode of Cresce to start their own school outside of those countries in the same way Iran must get its nuclear scientists educated outside of Iran.

I don't know how the frick a person can leave Iran, study for ANY amount of time there under state-sponsored scholarship, enter the field of nuclear development, and voluntarily return to Iran unless the nation is holding your family hostage. Like if my co-worker was like, "I'm going back to Iran" I'd be like, "You know the West kills people like you in Iran right? Do you suddenly hate eating sausage, your wife's freedom, Amazon, and an unmonitored Internet?"

                >Do you suddenly hate eating sausage, Amazon.
They already hate that before going to any western country.
                >Wife’s freedom
Like if they don’t have a different concept or freedom.
                >Unmonitored internet
                Lmao

                Anonymous

                >I don't know how the frick a person can [...] voluntarily return to Iran
Believe it or not, but a lot of Iranians support the Iranian system. Your mistake is to believe that all people are just like liberal, open minded westerners at heart.

                >your wife's freedom
Funny thing, Iranian women may not have a lot of public freedom or power, but they govern the household in exchange. You hear that Iranian women always have to be accompanied by a male relative when outside the home and think this means men control where the women go. You could also understand that a man of the family needs to make himself available when a woman wants to go somewhere.

Point being, other cultures have different values and some people really don't give enough of a frick about amazon and funko pops to throw away a millennia old culture over it.

                Anonymous

Why not? We know Sharteshane is the largest exporter of pymarics on the continent and while it's true they don't have public education it stands to reason there's private schools set up to make the next generation of dildo designers or whatever.

There are probably a few. Combat Pymary and noncombat pymary are two different things. Combat Pymary is short term. It's used to arrange aspects temporarily to harm or defend. You need to think on the fly or have a few really good tricks. I'm sure someone who doesn't know how to use pymary in combat can kill with it but that's no different than someone with a gun who's not really trained.

Ah, but men are made financially responsible for offspring they do not want. The financial contribution of a man is usually a couple years worth of wages. Those years of work stress are also not easy on the body.
Ask of women to shoulder the consequences of their decision by themselves. Like equals.

I was rereading earlier and I forget, did the prostitues in the nevergreen escape? I know many of them survived the silver, but do we know if they escaped the purge that came after by the crescian traitors?

They did, we last see them running off into the mountains. There's a dude carrying Dawn while Vanilla is supporting Dawn's legs, and the dude is saying, "I'm too twink for this shit."

I'm guessing the experiments with Roger Foi-Hellick was something to use the curse to turn all the non-Souds berserk, like instead of the curse being targeted to a single person make it so those affected go into a rage against anyone else. Alderode's armies would be decimated by their own hands and Cresce wouldn't need to lift a finger.

He's right it's Lemon's fault but he's totally wrong about pressing an attack they cannot win for some political gain.

I cannot think of a time when spending men for something as intangible as pride or honour or politics has ever went well in the long term. The Germans spent not only their adult men in WW1 but when they were very obviously losing spent their youth (teenaged) forces and Germany lost an entire generation of young people. Vietnam I feel shattered American trust in higher institutions forever and it was followed by Nixon, the pardon of Nixon (which was the right thing to do by the way), and the disaster in Iran. And this point will be proven again with Ukraine.

At the end of the day having a whole nation of people who are alive is ultimately the most important thing. This wisdom to prioritize the people and nation over something like justice, was the decision made by the German chancellor following the country's loss in WW2 when he opted to not chase down every Nazi he knew were vastly in the population. This is the mentality held by rational actors in Russia and the United States during the Cold War that held them from pressing the button whenever there was false detection of a missile strike because everyone understood that if they were getting nuked it was BETTER to soak the nuke and not nuke them back. When faced with complete and full justification to launch they realized it wasn't worth.

You burn his entire legacy to the ground. He was a popular rebellion leader, it would have been much simpler to Sting him and be done with it if they simply wanted him dead. The Curse completely poisons every memory of him. Any Ald who followed up him would have all their feelings twisted towards hate and disgust. Look how Vampire turned out, he even knew how the Curse would feel and act and he still got fricked by it. There's not an Ald alive who could even stand the thought of Roger Foi-Hellick now. If they had simply killed him he would have been a martyr. By cursing him they made him and his cause radioactive.

Only reason he didn't die is he knew they'd be cursing him and had Crescians there to help out, otherwise the guy would have been torn to pieces.

Nobody who wanted to use this curse would've thought that the curse would be placed on someone who'd simultaneously become a *lower* military priority whilst being in the presence of a *higher* military priority.

I have to say one of the most entertaining things about this world is watching enemies of the state find harbour with enemies of the state to the surprise of the state. Snowden is the most prominent example. I remember years ago people were defending that guy, I did too - UNTIL he fled to Russia. And I looked at all my friends still defending him and I was like, "Guys, Russia. RUSSIA." These past three months I cannot explain how fricking smug I feel about Snowden.

I'd bet that the people in Alderode are like "Okay, Cresce has helped him, that was unlikely but sure." Then it's like "Okay now he's married the queen and she's pregnant" and suddenly everyone's worried for their job/life and the boss comes down with executioner/bodyguards in tow and he's like "No, I'm not going to kill you guys, that's fricked up. Nobody could have seen that coming." That'd be like Snowden moving to Russia and shacking up publicly with Putin's daughter. You would actually applaud your enemy for so thoroughly flipping you off in the most absolute manner by letting the dissident have sex with what is essentially the head of state.

It makes it that even if the target survives, they'll NEVER be able to mount any sort of internal resistance within Alderode as most of the population with inherently and irrationally despise them. Thus, they can never be an internal threat to the country again.

I wonder what are the chances that Quigs and Matty end up somewhere near Roger this chapter.

I've always fricking loved Duane's plats. On the one hand they're clearly kids, full of fear and trouble. But on the other hand they have such trust in Duane, and such competence and skill. And such a fun sharp attitude.

The mix of it all is really great, and I'm glad we got to see it. Who knows? I guess they're all elderly now, but maybe we'll see them again at some point.

As you'd expect. He's young even for a plat to be doing this kind of fighting. But the alternative was being a plague orphan in a quarantine zone, so the PTSD might be the preferable option. I couldn't say.

    They lost four Vliegeng?

Three vliegeng died in the fight against the shrine's troops (12_02).

Three vliegeng attacked the shrine proper (16_2).

Two of those died(16_49, 16_117), and only Diva returned.

So how did he arrive at a number of four?

Wonder what his reaction will be to learning Duane is still kicking. Would he be happy or would it just break him?

Wait, so the way Lem talked last chapter, they were always planning to rape and pillage the shrine to make Cresce pissed at the queen for placing children at a military installation.

But now it sounds like they went off script in doing more the scouting the area?

      Anonymous

They were on a scouting mission.

The storm protecting the shrine was abruptly lifted during the scouting mission. A scouting mission has only a small force. They always planned to attack the shrine, but they were planning to do so with a FULL force, which Lemuel explicitly says: Lemuel wanted to go back to get reinforcements before launching an attack, but Ricker insisted on going ahead, because he didn't think the shrine would be well-defended (he seemed to think there would just be a "few shrine maidens") and not much else.

Ricker made a fatal miscalculation and got the majority of his squad killed.

To be a little fair, if it weren't for the main characters being there, the operation would have likely gone off without a hitch.

Though if they weren't there, the storms would have been indefinitely raging, so I guess it's a wash.

          Anonymous

Taking a moment to test that idea... suppose the storm had abruptly ended and Duane and co weren't there.

There would've been no shrine maidens to be found, because they would've all been locked inside the warded hall (Siya and Sara and the two blue girls were only out because of our protags). So they would've raided the place whilst only having the lizards to contend with. Lizards did kill a few, but mainly got slaughtered. So point to Alderode.

The Alds could've raided the place and dropped the allepakh still, which would've obliterated the shrine after pillaging what they want. So that's true. Point to Alderode.

And one of the vliegeng was killed by Uaid, so that's another point in Alderode's favor here.

They still have the shrine canon to contend with. Lemuel was able to destroy that, though, so point to Alderode.

The Crescian army plus firelopers arrived not long into the fray, and they only ceased fire because of the threat of Allepakh. So that was bad luck.

So yeah, you're right, the operation would've been much more successful if our protags hadn't been there.

I got the feeling Ricker had very self-oriented reasons for wanting to go in with so little supervision. The first thing he and his boys did was start looting. The second was to look for teenagers to rape.

Honestly this is all less on Lemon than it is on the idiots that gave someone like Ricker so much authority. But then I guess they might not have had too many options if the Eatlarch curse confines them to blondes only. What a clusterfrick

          Anonymous

Correct. Lemuel even says this-- that Ricker was not thinking with his head. Ricker was a piece of scum who was principally concerned with rape and pillage, and little else.

My suspicion is that Lemuel and Ricker were of equal rank, just in different ways. Lemuel is a vliegeng captain, but Ricker was the one leading the squad down below.

It's also possible that even if Lemuel has rank over Ricker, that Ricker's force of personality and stubbornness/greed just meant that Lemuel had no way to rein him in. This has been the undoing of armies throughout history the world over, when paid mercenary armies would stop fighting and drop everything to start looting, even when their commanders were trying to push them to make pursuit. You can arm a man and hire him to fight, but he's not an automaton, and armies always struggle with discipline and cohesion.

But the fact that Ricker was able to turn Lemuel around and make him (and the other vliegeng in the team) drop Ricker's squad off on the shrine, and order them to await Ricker's signal to pick them back up, suggests that Ricker had higher authority in this sphere. It's uncertain whether that authority comes from his rank or through his popularity with his men/the men all wanting to raid. Lemuel may have had to weigh the consequences of refusing, and of returning to Grenzlan and being chewed out for refusing to allow his men to raid a highly vulnerable and valuable target at a seemingly-opportune moment.

High command must have also expected Lems vliegeng squad to engage the shrine if given the opportunity. Lemuel says they are only there to scout, but who scouts with four vliegeng, a full company of soldiers and a weapon of mass destruction?

why send the souds to rape the shrine if they're so invaluable? did they think roger foi-hellick had set up a harem there?

      Anonymous

My guess is that the vast majority of their force in the area is soud, the non-soud force is minor and in a support role (like Mason).

      Anonymous

Soud aren't valuable, they're only particularly valuable in this one circumstance in assassinating the queen who unexpectedly is "shielded" by someone with the curse. If it were any other queen from history or any other target the Soud wouldn't be any more useful than any other soldier.

The caste system is a social construct that defines their value, which puts the Soud on the lower rungs of society but we as the audience know isn't a great way to run things but hey, you have to justify how the Soud don't fit into the hivemind and what better way than to treat them like shit. Just like how the Aldish social system defines women as second-class, it doesn't make sense but that's how they do it.

They weren't sent there to rape the shrine, that was Ricker's personal objective.
