Catching up on the last two pages, man, Ssaelism really does live up to its "Death Metal Christianity" vibes, doesn't it?
And the Gefendur are very much of a type to the pagans who first encountered Christianity, from the Romans to the Norse.
If Kasslyne's history mirrors the history of our own world, this would suggest that, after much persecution, Ssaelism gets its version of Constantine and wins out in the end.
The difference is there were multiple disparate pagan religions throughout europe before Christianity became the main one. Gefendur is essentially the official religion of the entire continent outside the Ssaelits in Alderode. And Ssaelism hinges on it's god killing the gods of the other religion which is a fair amount more aggressive than what Christianity asserted (simply that other gods were false).
A much bigger mountain to climb.
Christianity's views on Paganism were complex, and changed overtime. "Pagan Gods are false" is the modern take, but throughout Christianity's interaction with paganism you'd run the gambit from "Your Gods are actually demons trying to trick you" to "Yeah the Feyfolk are actually christian themselves."
It's interesting, really.
I'm way too lazy to seek out actual scholarship at the moment, but yeah if you look into ireland in particular there's a lot of weird integration of beliefs about fairies and christianity. the book changelings, fairies, deities, and saints covers the phenomenon in ireland specifically but it's actually a bit more widespread than that
Christianity in itself always seemed kinda dull when it's the interaction with pre-Christian cultures and how it adapts into it that fascinates me, like thats basically how we got Christmas.

Christmas might have a lot of pagan traditions wrapped into it but as a holiday it was always a Christian winter feast day pretty early in the religion's history.

well yeah, but that christmas is practically unrecognizable versus what we've got now. assimilating various other midwinter traditions is like 90% of what we'd recognize
Ssaelism has the advantage of it's doctrine actually approaching the Problem of Evil satisfactorily.
"The Creators of the World fricking sucked at it, our God killed them and will remake the world, but he wants to remake it so it's good for everybody, join us!"
Based on what we've seen so far you could argue that the Gefendur pantheon was also formed from an amalgamation of various senet beast worship before they became the main religion and started stamping out other senet beast cults.
this page makes me wonder how much Duane was mistakenly seeing Lem in Sette, but this scene is finally dispelling that for good. their wild hair and the bravado come from very different places - Lem was rebelling, Sette was neglected.
>It seems to be a part of the Geffie religion
It's also a part of Ssaelism, which is why the Ssaelit themselves don't really try to convert anyone. souls will be reborn as Ssaelit when they're good and ready.
aww. man this is still going, that's pretty rad.
Duane FINALLY spends a whole page being a decent Da
>Entire city just collectively tries to push Sette off on a circus
What an ungodsly crime
Sette didn't even TRY to haggle a price
>Sette didn't even TRY to haggle a price
Sette knows haggling only works when you have the power to back up your words.
>Gets her the lion poster and saves her from the circus
points for Nary
How does literally no one else in town find her to be cute?
You get to look at her through a computer screen
They have to LIVE with her
Fair point. And most of the town is also not made up of child lovers.
>most of the town is also not made up of child lovers
ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT.jpg
Shartes, man.
now listen here, shartes may be a lot of things: crooks, thieves, pimps, child lovers, but they will never, EVER be commies!
I dunno how many points he gets since not letting strangers hand off your child to the circus is generally a baseline of what is expected of a parent.
forget it Jake, it's Sharteshane
>not letting strangers hand off your child to the circus
You mean not letting strangers hand off your ticket outta Sharteshane to the circus.

difference is Ssael actually wants things to get better

Essentially that is killing a god though.

“The feyfolk were actually Christian themselves”— this is a new one for me, what’s this in reference to? I gotta read this.

>I could have happily written the two of them fangirling about lions for thirty pages. But there's still a world to save.
>Geffie shits killed off their own lions because they couldn't handle the banter
Weakling cannibals

man can the khert chill for 5 minutes?
>circus owner wanted to buy Sette
I'm imagining a miserable babby Sette dressed as a clown like Dumbo
>clown
She would have been in the Lion show, obvi.
Is sette proof that reincarnation exists or does it only exist for her and her brother?
It seems to be a part of the Geffie religion, whether or not its true.
Remember Sette telling Duane the reason ghost Mikaela always ran away was because she was in a hurry to get reborn as a banker.
Damn, was this a bit of foreshadowing about Mikeala becoming a teenage war criminal? It's also adorable that this is Sette's way of comforting Duane.
