That would be broadly true, too. No Foi-Hellick Affair, no baby brother going Heart of Darkness in the army. And never mind his state's or his own role in that.
Anon if it wasn't then it would've been somewhere else. What broke Lemuel was military life and realizing his big brother was as much of a moral coward as every else in the Army.

He's already had a big part of his worldview shattered today (Mikaila surviving), he still doesn't have it in him emotionally to think about it critically.

Sette and Duane are on shaky terms already with their future uncertain. Ripping out his memories is a convenient way for her to keep him as they travel to Alderode, and Sette might see her ability as a great way to address the Duane-Nary problem.
As far as we still know, the khert only records memories when it processes souls of the dead. Duane has been stumbling through his own khert memories for six years, which are likely harvested from whenever his soul is freed in the future. So all of the memories we've seen in the khert probably don't get ripped out of Duane.
That's of course if the khert isn't actually an active recording device, not waiting for death.

Duane's also kind of a freak and not normal, and he's ending up inside the khert with his soul and memories completely intact. Seems more likely to me that the khert's playing out what's in his head already rather than conjuring his disjointed memories from wherever else they happen to be floating around. Khert's a cool place but it sure ain't organized.

is right, doesn't this mean that at least some of the memories would be recursive? Whenever his final memories are released into the Khert, they'd include six years of wandering through his own memories and memories that have been manipulated by tittybird, which because of the timelessness of the Khert he could be experiencing memories of memories of manipulated memories as much as the actual events. Possibly before any of them even happen!
His own memories he experiences as part of his own internal khert, there's no recursion, he's just looking in his own RAM and recording his experiences to the end of his data array, upon his death this will be added to the server(khert).
The worst part about this I think that the queen is going to live. And Sette is going to grab at duane with her claws ripping a piece of him out.

I think Chea and her are going to live and the mouse girl's going to be another sacrifice. But I mean for Duane the worst part is that an important piece of him is going to get ripped out. I think sette's going to help him live his best life by removing his zealotry.
I think that’s too easy and artificial a resolution for his zealotry or any character flaw really. More likely she’ll remove something he treasures on accident if she removes anything at all.
I just realized, does Sette know that Miki is alive? Did Duane ever get around to telling her?
Duane just said that she knows the queen took EVERYTHING from him. And to her, she knows that Miki's death probably hurts Duane more than even his own death.
What if she rips out all his memories of his daughter so that, from her perspective, he won't be suffering so much?
Sette is too smart to do something stupid like that. I don't think she knows Mikaila is alive though, they never really had a talk after the shrine.
I mean this is a pretty stressful situation, she might not be in a state to behave fully logically here. And if that makes Duane calm tf down so she can stop these people from dying, I could see her doing it in the heat of the moment.
Who knows how her claws work on others she might rip out something out randomly. Duane has no one to blame for what's going to happen but himself.
Her own father forgetting about her would be one of the worst things imaginable to Sette, no way she's deliberately bring that one anyone else, even someone she thinks is dead.
On the contrary, I can see Sette cutting Mikayla out if she thinks its for Duane's own good and the good of Settegang. To her Miki's dead, but now Sette and more need him more than a dead girl, and they must focus on how to survive the present.
Sette is good at heart and empathetic, but she's still a Frummagem. If she can use something to her advantage, she will.

Yep, we've already had that role filled by Sara, for which Duane was partially responsible, and Cara, for which Duane had no responsibility but which motivated him to pursuing the silver and Cutter/Starfish.
Either Chea isn't going to die because Toma saves her somehow, or Chea isn't going to die because Duane snaps out of it and lets Sette do her thing. Also there's no way Chea is going to die when Matty explodes in a few pages.

Duane's being a pissmop as usual, but it is like only a day since the shrine. He hasn't had the time to work through all the revelations, nor has the setting really allowed it. It's understandable that he still believes Cresce was behind the assassination, but he isn't any better than Lemuel if he's willing to let Chea die to hurt Cresce. I guess that's the point of this scene

I don't give two shits about the queen. While she's not about to be killed by a monster of her own creation, it's pretty fricking close. She is not a good person, and she does not deserve to be saved, no matter how nice she actually is up close. And Duane is basically having a PTSD flashback right now. I hope he snaps out of it and realizes that Chea doesn't deserve to be in danger because of his trauma, but that's not how trauma usually works. This is still a comic about characters who have all seen some shit, and most of whom have done some shit. With the only exceptions mostly being too young to have done some serious shit.
I hope Duane sees the light. But the motherfricker is literally blind, and I can't blame him for having no eyes.
