Watch it and decide for yourself. I think it's worth a single viewing at the very least, especially in knowing how shit modern Hollywood is.
It's not a movie that'll change your life but it's quite alright.

This is a really good rank, though I haven't seen Oppenheimer yet. Only thing I would change is put Dunkirk higher, it takes advantage of his suburb directing of large scale set pieces and downplays his weakness, which is dialogue.

      Anonymous

I actually had Dunkirk way up in my list when it first came out but for some I reason I haven't rewatched it and haven't discussed a lot since its release. Might give it a rewatch later on but I don't think I'll move it higher than Inception.

Explain how is Oppie is better than TDK/Interstellar. Those movies at least have better and more interesting characters and impactful scenes. Only a handful of good scenes in Oppie.

      Anonymous

I love TDK and Interstellar but the only characters that are better than Oppy/Strauss are Joker, Bruce and MAYBE Cooper. And that's just the writing but performance wise only Ledger is better imo. Gary Oldman and Eckhart are maybe slightly below in terms of performance.

And I generally have low expectations of biopic and kept hearing about how Nolan would NEVER show Oppy being BTFO by Truman(which does happen). It's honestly a very nuanced portrayal that also manages to be exciting. The score is also my favorite since interstellar.

        Anonymous

        >Oldman and Eckhart are maybe slightly below
        I think they were good.
        >manages to be exciting
Sure the oppie's internal emotional scenes were good. But the movie is so fast paced while trying to hide dull plot with exposition so we don't get impacted when they are played(emily blunt scene holding murphy).Sure the score is well done and i like violins and the early montage.

i think this is overall barely 5/10 how would you rate it out 10?

          >i think this is overall barely 5/10 how would you rate it out 10?
9/10. How do you feel about Lawrence of Arabia and JFK?

            Anonymous

Haven't watched JFK. Lawrence of Arabia is great and so well made and you care about the characters/their journey. It's not emotionally flat/sterile. The 2nd half is weaker but still overall great.

              Anonymous

It leans more JFK, Social Network with its frantic editing and thriller elements than Lawrence of Arabia. Which is why I asked. I think a lot of people were expecting that kind of David Lean/Richard Attenborough style epic where characters have a bit more warmth and a story with more catharsis and are going to be disappointed with this.

                >I think a lot of people were expecting that kind of David Lean/Richard Attenborough style epic
Why would literally anybody in the entire world expect this from Christopher Nolan?

                Anonymous

                >people were expecting that kind of David Lean/Richard Attenborough
People wanted more cool set pieces/engaging plot and ending to be more memorable.(like Inception).
That's why most people are like "good but too long/meh/bored/underwhelming.".

                Anonymous

I can't think you can make this plot more engaging. Nolan's non linear style is probably one of the best tools to make something that's unexciting, exciting. Imagine if this was a by the number biopic like Spielberg's Lincoln? It would be a certified flop.

Lawrence of Arabia has had second half complaints ever since its release.

                Anonymous

Thats because people at the time were uncomfy seeing a man get sexually abused and didnt understand him becoming a “bad” guy. The second half is the whole reason the movie is timeless and the greatest of all time. The second half is where it goes from desert epic to character study. The first half is just the great photography and location shooting that has been aped by hundreds of filmmakers from Spielberg to Peter Jackson.

nta. It's just not as interesting or engaging as the first half.

                Anonymous

Thats because youre probably a brainlet capeshitter. The second half IS the reason the movie is interesting. The first half is action adventure to grab your attention, the second half is why its a masterpiece.

                Anonymous

meh it's not paced as well and it overstays at lot. Bridge on the River kwai feels more rounded/executed for it's runtime.

Inception and TDK are the only ones that are actually good, because normies and redditors have rejected them as overrated. Also normies cant even watch Inception now because they get uncomfortable seeing Ellen Page and dont know how to talk about the film anymore.

Cillian in the chamber with his father is the only reason the movie works. You just have adhd and wanted more kewl special effects like the hallway scene.

and that scene was fine, but the 30 minutes it took leading up to it was boring as hell

            Anonymous

Youre lying. Its the shortest section of the movie, they literally “skip” it and take a short cut cause the other layers are collapsing. The only reason you would think it takes “30 minutes” is because its split up by them going to limbo, which is also one of the best sequences because its the culmination of Leo’s arc.

This. I've never seen a more boring action sequence in an supposed action film

I love heist films and I have two issues with Inception. Arguably it's a more tightly written film than TDK and Interstellar but my issues are.

      1) The snow mountain fight has choppy editing that makes hard to follow at times.

      2) The side characters could've used a bit more personality. Have you seen Soderbergh's Ocean's 11? Each side character is given a bit quirk that adds a bit of flair to their characters. Here they're all very serious professionals who stand out much from each other in terms of personality.

      Still a great film.

the boring ass snow fort heist was a slog and pretty much ruined the movie

        >snow heist
i haven't watched it in years so I'll concede that this part was probably an issue, but interstellar still felt worse to me just because of the dialogue. I know the common meme joke is the "love transcends time" phrase, but there were alot of moments like that where it felt stilted like the reciting of the poem.
interstellar is the first time I felt like nolan was just trying too hard to make me feel something if that makes sense. to be fair inception could have had bad dialogue like this as well but I don't remember anything this egregious.

        >oceans 11 side characters
that's true i only remember tom hardy was charismatic and had bad spelling, JGL and page were just template characters. and also saito was based

          Anonymous

Yeah Saito and Hardy were the only fun side characters. I'm partial to Page since she looked real cute there but yeah, she's a template character. But then again you also get shit that you won't get in most heist films which is a great arc both the hero and the "villain".
