How many chapters are between those book? I know some of them are two or four parters of the same story taking place over a couple of hours but even then there must be at least a dozen guys dead per day.

I remember making that and those posts. Good to see at least some of it vindicated though I need to reread the entire series and update it.
It's a backwater but it's also huge with massive lands and resources plus some fairly new cities. Sendai wasn't all that old when Hikiji conquered that region and he would have taken it without much of a siege. So all the benefits of a then modern Edo city with none of the major costs.
Since Hikiji's main rival in the region has been tree food for over a decade, he's been able to sit back and build his wealth and power while other provinces squabble among stthemselves.

Dogi is the part of Dark Horse that handles everything Usagi, including the Netflix series. The fact that Dark Horse was willing to give Stan that much control over Usagi was probably why he jumped back over from IDW

"Usagi Yomjimo Saga #1" isn't the start of the series, though, it's the start of the first Dark Horse run.
Where I live, that's basically all the shops sell. I'm honestly fricking furious at dark horse for that bullshit. Saga #1 is just about the worst place you could start reading and it's where most people will start.

Ehhhh... personally I'd recommend any of those volumes over the ones before them as a starting point since the artstyle, writing, and overall tone are much better representations of the series than any of the previous stuff. Well, besides The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy.

It's almost like not changing writers and artists every 12 to 36 months results in a much better reading experience.
Simplest way: 1987->2014 (Saga)->2019
Then Usagi Yojimbo/TMNT, followed by Senso (these were written before 2019, but are side stories.)
Saga (2021) would be second edition reprints of Saga (2014.)
1993, 1996, and the Color Specials are all presented, in chronological order, in the Saga.
Color Classics, Lone Goat and Kid, and Dragon Bellow Conspiracy are colorized reprints of Fantagraphics (1987) comics.

For a series that has been running this long I kinda expected more material. Not that I'm complaining. This doesn't seem that difficult to get into. I might dive into the Fantagraphics one first since I'm pretty sure the Dark Horse Saga ones are not in any danger of never getting a reprint.
Each of those big books is over 500 pages.
But yeah, the average number of issues per year for Usagi is 9-10, not 12 like most comics, so we're "down" two big books of material.
it's everything up to the last few years of stories. presumably we'll get volumes, 10, 11, etc as time goes on.
That's a hell of a gift.
Usagi Yojimbo Legends, collecting nebulously canon material, is an unnumbered Saga volume that's due to be reprinted soon.

Not in the traditional sense. The closest we've come is the burnt toast girl who helps Usagi survive a trek through a snowy mountain.
Why did Stan leave IDW? Money? Was it the reason for all the other moves? I know he tried going full color all the time with Mirage first then went to black and white again with Dark Horse
presumably money and creative control. IDW was throwing cash at turtles to keep the company afloat and stan was able to benefit, and after IDW went breasts up dark horse threw money and creative control at stan to get him to come back.
Stan only left Dark Horse because it was bleeding money because Embracer Group swallowed it whole, it's the same reason Mignola hurried up and finished Hellboy
Once the troubles were done I assume Stan just waited out his contract and went home and it can't hurt that IDW is also bleeding money now

I mean it's one of Usagi's defining visual traits. So he has the scar, he's clearly supposed to be usagi, not Yukichi.
The scar also looks kinda drawn on last second with how oddly it's placed.
I'm assuming Stan accidentally drew Yukichi in that panel and maybe didn't have enough time to redraw it or else just said "frick it" and just quickly drew the scar on and then hoped the coloring and the following panels would make you just assume it's Usagi.
It wasn't last minute because there is no scar. Stan did not accidentally draw Yukichi, he intentionally drew Yukichi. The precious page shows Yukichi still awake while Usagi is fast asleep. The next page implies a passage of time, Yukichi is now the one sleeping while Usagi struggles to stay asleep.
This is a coloring error 100%. The anon insisting it's a scar is a moron. It's amazing that he insists that it's a defining trait yet he is incapable of distinguishing a simple eye brown from the usual drawn line.
If it was Yukichi, we should either see the hearth at the top right of the panel or his swords at the opposite corner.

I really hope you either jest or have a condition which causes problems with face recognition, because apart from that erroneously drawn scar and obviously miscolored clothes, it is cleary Yukichi. They are very different.
Right it clearly looks like Yukichi but that's almost certainly just an error on Stan's part. The blue outfit and the clear scar that Usagi has but Yukichi doesn't, plus the following panels focusing on Usagi makes it clear who it's SUPPOSED to be, even if for that one panel it looks like Yukichi.
At this point this is just a weak bait or you really know nothing about panelling.
The eye scar is a large part of Usagi's visual identity anon.
So is his head shape, nose shape, the style of his chonmage, face tuft and lack of any hairstyle. Everything bwsides the scar matches Yukichi. What is wrong with you.
Or, even simpler, Stan has drawn the scar on Yukichi as a reflex and didn't notice it because of 6 panels of Usagi afterwards and the coloring team fricked up, just like they keep fricking up the eye colors, because they fricking suck.

is probably right; he probably penciled in Yukichi's fluff and inked it over before realizing it and hastily correcting things. His cheek fluff even look like a weird blend of the two; it's rounded down like Usagi's whiskers instead of up rather Yukichi's.
I'm pretty sure it's just a nasal ridge. You can even see Usagi with the same resting face in the 7th panel and the last panel of the previous page. You're willing to discarded all other evidence over one dodgy line.
Holy crap, you got it. It's the muzzle line. Usagi has a horizontal lime, suggesting a short and wide animal mouth, while Yukichi has a vertical one, suggesting a longer, thinner muzzle. The size and shape of their chins confirms that.

Yes, their ears are tied differently. Stan made sure Usagi and Yukichi, despite both being white rabbits, are different in almost every possible aspect and feature. Different shape of eyes, head, chin, fuzz, nose, nose ridge/muzzle, ears, face fluff, one has a scar the other has hair and Yukichi is visibly slimmer.
People being confused because of miscoloration is something I cannot wrap my head around. How?

UY in color isn't the problem for me; digital coloring just takes away some of the visual charm of Stan's artwork. I feel the traditionally-done Color Specials struck a happy medium in my opinion, and I wish they would consider mimicking that style in some way.

The funny thing is that digitally colored comics still can perfectly simulate that old comic feeling by simply adding a gausian noise effect to the already colored pages.
ehh, it's not quite the same. there's too many gradients, and in this case the hatching on the trees don't go well with the color in my opinion
Well, the gradients coudn't be avoided since the original coloring was nothing but gradients. But flat coloring plus gausian noise can imitate an old comic book effect quite well.
I took out the gradients, put flat colors in their place and added a different gradient to the background, and it turned out better than I expected. what do you think?

It both is and isn't.
Jei is a recurring villain who appears somewhat rarely, but each time he does the comic goes into full kino mode.
Usagi's cousin is a new addition to the comics and has been around since the IDW run started.
But in general, the format is pretty much the same. Usagi travels around the land (sometimes with a temporary but recurring companion), runs into some trouble, the trouble runs away for a while, then it comes back to bite Usagi in the ass later and shortly after that dies.
Yokai, like the snow lady here are somewhat rare but Usagi has ran into such creatures before, what is a bit new however is the fact that this time Usagi notices that he is being pulled towards something this time, usually he just ends up stumbling across yokai.
Also, nobody has called Usagi a meddler yet, that's a bit rare.
Hey, I'm someone who's been constantly screaming at how shit Sonic comics have become. Is Usagi Yojimbo a worthwhile substitute for disillusioned Sonic fans?
not really? like, it's a wonderful comic, but it doesn't really have anything in common with sonic aside from being about furry characters. It's closest to, i dunno, samurai jack? It's about the wanderings and misadventures of a samurai warrior and its 40 years long with an ongoing storyline. i cant recommend it enough but i don't think much is shared with Sonic.
I'd say it has an ongoing continuity rather than an ongoing story. It's not like Usagi has an overarching goal, not even revenge against Hijiki.
I feel like that was going to be a big plot point early on, but it would mean the comic would be much shorter and end with Usagi's death, so Stan went for the open-ended ongoing route

Jei has a very specific definition of evil that includes a lot of innocent people. You have to be entirely free of sin, seemingly, and not even Usagi is so pure. I honestly don't know how cousin Yukichi escaped his wrath.

Jei serves twisted gods of filth and corruption. His beef with Usagi is because Usagi keeps escaping him; Jei believes Usagi's death is needed to complete his ascension to godhood.
Jei considers most people 'evil' though it varies at times. Sometimes people who were decent to him and Keiko don't trigger the murder alarm and a lot of the time when not dealing with Usagi he's usually fricking up jackasses
With Usagi's case his schizophrenia makes him think Usagi is the ultimate target so he can ascend to godhood. Not sure if that implies that in his logic Usagi is the biggest evil.

Usagi cannot even hold a grudge against Kenichi because despite of all the hatred and scorn he got from him, he considers Jotaro as his real son no matter what, and has been a great husband and father, despite his wife and son's shameful state. Hell, Jotaro and Yuki themselves have said that Kenichi has been a great dad and husband despite of all.
Jei doesn't truly think Usagi is "evil" in the sense we do. He wants to kill Usagi because his evil Gods have promised him that once he does, he will be able to ascend and join them as one of their number.

IDW shut down their boardgames, lost their TV licensing side and now just publishes TMNT, Sonic and Pastel Horses which nobody buys. Their big gambit is to hope the Last Ronin game sells a shitton but they're bleeding money pretty badly. If Sonic or TMNT takes a hiatus you know shit is dire.

The horses used to be IDW's top battlehorse until the editor (Bobby Curnow) stopped giving a frick and anabled the comic staff to go full moron on the stories, cut as many corners possible on the art (even using stolen stock clipart assets, stealing ideas, designs and even panels from fanworks and even drawing the horses on a way that none of the characters even resembled at all their tv selves)
Curnow also enabled the comic staff to bring friends on board to work on the boom despite not being qualified at all, also enabled the comic staff to openly antagonize the fans, use the horses as mouthpieces for their personal fetishes, politic views and sex orientations and a long, long etc until the comic sales plummeted down from nearly 40,000 monthly sales to just 3,000, aka 2,000 sales under the red sales limit. (one of the comic staffers revealed that selling 5K books per month was the line where IDW still could make a profit and anything under that meant selling the comic at a loss.)
The one and only silver linning from that shitty book and shitty staff was that nearly the end of the original G4 horse run, a channer, (YES, A CinemaphileNER) managed to get hired to draw the book for lower deck stories and the guy made such a fricking incredible job that he attracted the ire of the top artists because he made them all look bad, so they pushed Curnow into sabotaging his issues by forcing him to work with shitty writers, giving him insanely short deadlines, fricking up his line art by deliberately coloring it bad, not adding his name to the book's cover and making him give up on some issues on the promise of giving him some fun stories to draw and then never honoring IDW's side of the deal.

It was funny to see how the same offboarders who spammed and attacked Cinemaphile for criticrizing the series also flooded this place to attack the comic once they found out that a dirty channer became an ascended fanboy and was drawing official comics while they still achieved nothing at all.
Lauren Faust herself used to praise Cinemaphile and claimed that she often prepared herself and lurned around to find some of the best thought, and most importantly, the most honest criticism she had ever seen about her works, aka the horses and later the super hero girls show.

Now that I think about it Stan has mainly used names whose romanizations don't have ambiguity in their pronunciations when read by an English speaking audience. Only other one I can think of is Gen (gif vs jif argument), but that's more a quirk of English.
