I'm reading it as we go too.
Classic Jei
Wait did he tell all this to the goons last issue
Jei told the Yuki-Onna he'd been chasing Usagi for years.
Have potatoes or sweet potatoes ever been mentioned before, because it was the white foreign devils that brought them to Japan
Are they any weirder than pineapples? Anyone see that this issue btw? I'm rereading it again and I can't find one for the life of me.
Try on page 8, partially off panel.
MOTHERFU...
Clever girl....
When did the pineapple thing start? I know it's in lots of issues, but I don't remember it being commented on by other anons from chapter 1, so there has to be a first pineapple point right?
IDW, I think. Before that, we had huge radishes and huge fish.
I seem to recall a young Usagi and Kenichi looking for sweet potatoes in the mountains, but I couldn't tell you the issue. Relatedly, Katsuichi once planned to roast a pumpkin for his and Usagi's dinner, though I suppose that could have been a Kabocha.
The Portugese introduced them to Japan a few decades or so before the series is set. The shogunate actually encouraged peasants to grow sweet potatoes since they're fairly easy to grow in small gardens.
What I like about Usagi threads is how educational they can be. Also sword fights.
This bit reminds me Batman villains. Like, they are usually supernatural freaks of nature but for some reason they round up criminal thugs to follow their insane themed plans.
I knew we shouldn't have stopped for potatoes
Just in time to not fight.
Shut up, Yukichi
Don't be mean to Yukichi.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!
I love that as soon as he puts together that it's jei usagi is in haul ass mode
Not many foes make Usagi shit himself like that.
>Lord Hikiji's men are up to no good: Bring em on.
>An army of bandits pillage the villages: child's play
>Crazed Yokai on the loose: Good excuse to pal around with Sasuke
>Jei's within a 100 miles of you: PANIC!
A crazy homicidal lunatic whose only goal in life is to kill you and who always 'reincarnates?'
Of course you'd run.
Jei is the only thing Usagi doesn't meddle for.
You can only kill a guy so many times before you just want him to frick off and leave you alone.
Jei is the only opponent in the entire comic (barring maybe the Lord of Owls) who Usagi has never ever beaten in a straight fight. All of his wins were purely circumstantial and came down to outside influences stopping Jei before he killed Usagi. Usagi is right to be absolutely fricking terrified.
There's a few people who can still whup Usagi, Tengu, Nakamura Koji could probably kick his ass, Katsuichi, probably others. Though you're right, I wouldn't really classify any of them as enemies. They're either on a more cordial basis and the whole Tengu was Usagi being a shit head and bringing it on himself rather than the way Jei is absolutely gunning for him.
Love Usagi he knows he better run. Despite Jei been defeated many times he still doesn't think he can win.
>meddleman chooses to not meddle
Is it meddling when it's your own damn business?
>the one time in all of history Usagi does no meddle
You do not frick around and find out with Jei.
For some reason I draw the line on Jei knowing how to track footprints. Dude spends 100% walking around like a zombie following people based on their weird psychic energy and now he knows about such an earthly skill as following footprints and gate estimation?
He could have gotten it from the people he possesses
In fairness, snow makes tracks so much more obvious.
Chizu status: Forgiven immediately.
This is honestly my most feared way of dying.
I'm sure we'll see a worse one in about, oh, three or four chapters.
Jei makes an astonishing single leap forward, just like my kids when they see a birthday present waiting on the couch.
Yup, full Jason.
>Hey, where does that river lead to?
>It falls into the Kuri-sutalu lake. Why do you ask?
Await for Jei's return in the upcoming Usagi Yojimbo stories:
- Jei Takes Ginza
- Jei Goes to Enma's Hell
- Jei Ekusu (starring Space Usagi!)
Jei vs Space Usagi would might a nice off canon story
>Jei is an unkillable mad AI which can leave behind it's current body, at will or after it's destruction, and by touch alone possess any android, cyborg or appliance and warp it to fulfill his evil needs (and make it resemble him). He might be the nanny droid, he might be your tv bot, he might be the the spaceship you're flying in.
They have melted him, hit him with an EMP, crushed him into scrap, cut him into pieces with laser swords, exploded him, fed him to rust amoebas and trapped him in a HDD which was later shot into the sun, but he always comes back from a missed fragment or a backup copy that activates after the current version of Jei AI (J.A.I.?) "dies".
I'd read the shit out of this.
>In space no one can hear you *fuiii*
>Jei makes an astonishing single leap forward, just like my kids when they see a birthday present waiting on the couch.
I hope a drunk driver runs over your kids
I had no idea Stephen King browses Usagi threads.
He's only one guy count: ... I forget.
He is only one guy
One guy mode activate!
Yukichi has unlocked achievement: one guy.
We should do a tally of sensible bandits
Also a tally for "he fights like a tiger"
Should we also count into that number the mercs who stopped fighting during the stone episode?
Anyone smart enough to not throw their life away over something stupid and Feudal counts
>sensible bandits
There's probably less than 10 instances of that, maybe less if you consider those that were sensible but late enough to still die.
Fuii
Shark Jei coming soon from the Asylum.
samurai showown quote? Or Moby dick?
Certainly the latter. I don't know that Stan was ever much of a gamer.
Well frick.
good riddance
Ehh hes probably fine
>Jei will appear in Jei goes to New York
Jei-san X
Mostly just got his ass kicked
>Jei goes to New York
>Another TMNT/Usagi crossover
>This time, Usagi and Gen end up in NYC, and meet up with the turtles
>Jei's there somehow
You know come to think of it has the comics ever done the crossover from the reverse side? I know the 2k3 show had Usagi and Gen visit NY but I don't think the comics ever did.
Not that I recall. I suppose if a "reverse" crossover would happen, it would be in a TMNT book, or with the TMNT writers. That said, I would like to see Stan write some "fish out of water" gags about Usagi in modern day NYC. We got a bit of that in the short Space Usagi crossover when Space Usagi accidentally transported regular Usagi from the past, and in the Wherewhen comics, but we could always use more
>Jei somehow possesses Shredder, combining into one unkillable revenant
>Dragged the soul out of a yuki-onna
>Fell into a freezing river soon afterwards
Is he getting a power up out of this?
Jei is still the same body in Senso until he gets zapped
It's Jei. He'll be back.
Is this the first time Usagi's really acknowledged Keiko in speech? Cousin Oliver mentioned her a few times, but before that it seemed to usually be Usagi vs Jei with Keiko off screen or waiting to find her uncle again.
It really has. Because honestly, this was the first time anyone who encountered Jei and lived to tell about it actually told Usagi about it afterwards.
Usagi having the foresight to not try and follow Keiko miiiiiight be a bit of an ass-pull, however.
>instinctively wants to search out Jei's pet e-girl
Jei letting you live is always worse than when he wants to kill you.
The end........ ?
Inb4 it's Usagi's home village again and there are shogunate guys there looking for him.
previews for epilogue issue. I am very curious to see the fall out for this.
there is still 1 issue left? jesus
And that's a wrap. Thoughts on t he issue? Is Jei Dead? What will become of Keiko? What's next for our heroes? Are any of you reading this? See you in 30.
Jei went full Jason here
Even his "Death" was pretty Jason.
Usagi should have chained him to the laske.
Something that's been consistent about Usagi's wins over Jei is they come down to Usagi using the environment. In their initial fight, Jei was struck by lightning in an openm field, in Circles, Usagi threw him off a cliff, and here, Usagi chooses to fight on a frozen river. It's a clever way of maintaining that Jei wins in a straight fight.
As in the fight in Circles, Usagi only lives through this because an ally pulls him up (though obviously Yukichi is more of a friend than Kenichi.)
For a supposed agent of the gods it would quite seem the gods are working against Jei
I mean, he is an emissary of the dark/evil gods, so naturally the good gods would want Jei dealt with. (That being said, does Shinto have a good/evil god dynamic like western pantheons? I know Izanagi and Izanami, but are there other good/evil gods?)
Good/Evil isn't as clear cut. Is Lord Ennma evil.?
He's generally pretty bureaucratic.
If we were doing DND alignments, he'd definitely be Lawful Neutral. His job is to judge souls in the afterlife and decided if they go to heaven, hell, or purgatory
Neither, he just really hates Sasuke.
That's pretty evil, dude. Sasuke's the best.
Hey now, . He LOVES sasuke, Just in a japanese fashion, like companies love their salarymen.
Yes, but keep in mind that they may also be talking about taro.
Putting the CHO into kabuki-cho.
TEA IS LIFE OR DEATH.
TO BE DEFEATED AT TEA IS TO EXILE YOUR OWN HEART.
TOMOE HAS NO GAME.
It was fun, you'll think Jei would be a joke at this point for how many times he gets killed but something the comic does well is show how much o a treat he can be, and how close to die is Usagi every time they cross path.
Stans art is still so nice
Thanks for the storytime OP.
Made this one for the last issue's thread, but I'll post it again because sure why not.
This is excellent content.
I'm just now imagining Jei as a fussy parent making sure Keiko's all bundled up warm for playing outside.
>Hey boss can we get some potato-Fluuu!
Nice stuff!
THATS WHAT YOU GET FOR ASKING FOR JAAIIMO.
Oh frick, is that the end
The spear went with him right
Or is Keiko the final Jei
Remember what they were saying about the current, friend.
Keiko will pick him up down the river someplace.
Ah, I got overexcited
Or some hapless fisherman will find a spear and before he can think to pawn it he'll hear the flutes out off in the distance
It all comes to the same place.
Jei can turn any spear he touches
Wait wasn't there a cold demon? Did I miss an issue?
Yup. Jei killed her.
Shit I did miss an issue then. Will have to track it down.
I missed that one as well. I wanted to see what Yukichi did with ice ghost mommy.
https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/141041283/#141041283
I do wonder what's next for the series after this mini wraps up. The return to Dark Horse is all well and good but are we just getting minis from here out or are we gonna go back to a monthly release cycle. I'd really like to see more done in ones.
frankly, usagi should had ended a while ago
You should have ended a long time ago
true, it's not too late to end myself. maybe tonight
ALL THINGS WILL DIE AND ALL THINGS WILL BE BROKEN.
Say hi to Lord Enma for me.
The comic will most likely end up inconclusive. Stan has no intention of stopping until he croaks and no end or particular direction for the story in mind.
The whole appeal is to be episodic. Oh yes there has been continuity and changes but it's very much about the journey. If the series does ever wrap up it should be in a small way.
I disagree tbh. Most of the series has had overarching arcs that stretched for 4-5 years each.
Episodic doesn't mean shit like the simpsons where nothing between episodes matters. But all the arcs have still be largely self contained.
Not really. It's still a continuous story which I like about it.
Stan mentioned in an interview that, if UY were to end, it'd end small scale, Usagi meddling as he always does in a small village, and then walking away into the sunset, never to be seen or heard from again. There'd probably be no resolution to Hikiji or Jei, just an ambiguous "the adventures continue..." type of ending
Hikiji is such an interesting concept for an enemy. And I don't just mean when he was a human either but just the fact that he's so far out of Usagi's reach that the even the idea of battling him is impossible. He won. The war ended and he came out on top. Maybe somewhere down the line he gets taken out as part of political backstabbing Nobunaga style but really we're just watching the story of a guy who was on the loosing end of a war in a new government he can't do much about beyond help the people in front of him. This isn't Star Wars where we fight an evil emperor. Hikiji just.... is.
Awesome draw, dude.
The way stan draws humans really reminds of tezuka
I can't imagine him NOT being an influence.
I thought it was ice hocking on the cover.
THREAD THEME.
Bump
When is she coming back, anyway?
I'd hazard a guess that she is going to be some sorta foil in the "Tomoe gets married to honorable Samurai she doesn't love and Usagi is forced to watch" episode. Which we might get in the next 20 years at this pace.
>Which we might get in the next 20 years at this pace
Even with superior japanese genes folded 1000 times you're being quite optimistic with how long is Stan gonna be able to hold a pencil
Implying Stan won't come back as a Gaki who will keep on painting and writing new pages for whatever publisher he chooses to haunt.
Noriko assassinating Tomoe's husband under the mistaken impression she actually loves him would be a neat development.
>Tomoe is about to get married to Samurai uglu bastard
>Noriko seduces him and arrives at the wedding as the new surprise bride
>Tomoe sighs in relief and Noriko notices this
>She is angered by the realization Tomoe didn't love the fat ugly old samurai and kills him
>Meddling ensues
>Nyah! I killed your husband, Tomoe!
>Oh no!... Anyway.
Here's one panel, I can't find an "anyway" panel
>Man this tragedy will surely break. If not for that one minister's moral support I might fall apart completely......*whistles nonchalantly*
>Coming back
I also really just want to take a second and point out that for as long as the comic has been going this is still only the third or fourth time Usagi and Jei fought.
Because of the yearly storytimes I think we just all take things for granted, like Tomoe being a major character
Even though I'm a Chizu gay I do rather miss her
>we took Tomoe for granted
We lost her right after she became a truly complex and well developed character. Seriously, she's been little more than "PROTECT THE LORD" for two decades, then TTotMoM comes along, shapes her into one of the best and most likable characters in the comic, and then one five o'clock tea later she's gone for twenty years, appearing only in two alternate (?) future comics.
Are you counting that TMNT crossover?
I wonder if issue 5 will involve a character we know or another spirit coming for vengeance.
It will probably be mostly coda for all the stuff we've seen to this point, Jei's current fate and then maybe a tease for whatever Stan has planned next.
Cheers Anon
*kanpai
>*Kanpai means sometimes you want to go, where everyone knows your name. And they're always glad you came. You wanna go where people know, where people are all the same. You wanna go where everyone knows your name.
>Kanpai was filmed in front of a live studio audience.
nice
I keep avoiding Usagi Yojimbo cause I keep hoping it will end, and then I can finally collect it all in one giant Bone-like compendium, BUT THAT DAY NEVER FRICKING COMES!! WHAT THE HELL, STAN!!?
>Japanese cartoonist too consistent to quit
>muh ending
You're a moron
>all of Usagi being compiled in a single compendium
It ain't happening.
That would be a monster of a tome. Like it's easy to forget just how much Usagi there actually is.

Either Jei's going to pull a SURPRISE MOTHERFRICKER or this is where we part ways with Yukichi officially.
>Yukichi just decides to bounce because the crazed psycho wolfman
>Hey so it was nice meeting you cousin but I just remembered I left something on back at ..... BYE!
>Keiko just finds Jei downstream and tells him to stop being silly
>Oh Uncle, you needed a bath anyways.
>What did you do wrong?
>...
>Well?
>I chased him out onto the ice.
>What should you have done?
>...
>Uncle?
>Graaah! Not fought on the ice!
I'm about to make another commission to the guy that made Usagi x Kazehime ship art. give me ideas for what you want me to commission from him next?
Chizu and Kimi sitting next to each other, both visibly absent minded and blushing slightly. Chizu thinking about Usagi, visualizing him all heroic and manly like and presenting his exaggerated muscular torso. Kimi thinking about Chizu, who in her thoughts is wearing a slightly too revealing kimono and visibly teases the viewer (Kimi). Nothing NSFW.
>give me ideas for what you want me to commission from him next
a what if situation where usagi stays after the tea ceremony.
Ok could you go into more detail?
What if Tomoe knew how to brew a decent cup of tea and had, as the kids say, game
>instead of cat hair in your tea when visiting a cat lady, Usagi gets a live tokage in his tea from Tomoe, the tokage lady, who even has tokage pictures on her walls
Kek
Probably the same
>Ok could you go into more detail?
no
What if Tomoe is transported to New York to hang with the titles for once?
sex
Frick the hell yes!
I swear the coloring went bad again when it was decent last issue
>tfw we are few months away from next storytime
>tfw Furuta Oribe is about to be executed
Tea anons... Hold me.
>>tfw we are few months away from next storytime
Can’t wait!!!
Neither can I.
Any particular wishes for any memes or jokes you guys would want to see this year?
Make it gay
As a joke
Pic related is as gay as I will ever make it.
>TFW I got the Zatoichi and Lone Wolf and Cub Blue rays for Khristmas
That's nice. I got some Kurosawa stuff last year.
I got a woodblock print
Very nice.
Very nice. I have all the volumes except 9 and the IDW stuff and fricking hell what happened with 9 its out of print everywhere while also being the newest one. Which wouldn't be weird by itself but you can still get t he earlier volumes fine
These were my first physical usagi books, im sure ill end up with the others down the road. Im not sure why 9 is hard to get, is there any particular stories in it that would make it desirable?
>Very nice.
Thanks, now I’ve got to figure how old this particular print is
I bought myself books 3 and 8 of the dark horse saga with a gift card
Time to update the reading list again...
Jei vs Space Usagi would be awesome.
Past the first four I believe, I found the odd-numbered Zatoichis are usually better than the even-numbered.
>I suspect IDW's financial troubles are related.
Stuff between it and the DH rights exchange probably threw a lot of it up in the air too.
Cute Chizu. As for the book, this one contains The Hidden specifically which is a very good story. There's also some TMNT stuff which would probably drive up demand.
I'm loving all the Jei stuff coming out.
Just to be sure, the annual storytime hasn't started yet, right?
We're still few months away from that.
No, that’s in march
Say one thing, whatever comes next, Usagi's first priority needs to be to get the hell out of dodge. Where did are resistant ronin gps tracker have him pinpointed last check in? Might be a good time to check out the opposite end of the country. Maybe hang out on one of the smaller islands.
