It was a moronic movie. Samurai had been using hand firearms and cannons imported by the Portuguese for 3 centuries by the point of the movie events. Why the frick they were turned into some weird luddites/noble savages is beyond me.
If you want the samurai kino, watch Kurosawa's Ran or Kagemusha.

Did you watch the film? It was explained quite clearly that the Samurai that followed Katsumoto felt that the emperor was moving too quickly with his embrace of of the west and that is why they returned to their traditional ways.

It was a moronic explanation. Samurai didn't rebel against rifles, they rebelled to protect their privileges they were owed for fighting against the Shogunate.

It was not a rebellion against rifles. It was as one of the characters in the film put it a fight for the soul of japan.
Katsumoto used traditional methods because he didn't want to see Japan lost to the west. He wanted his country to maintain its tradition. In death he succeed when the emperor refused to sign the agreement.
This really isn't complex stuff. You can say well that is not reality but its fiction. Its not supposed to represent reality exactly.
