No such thing for most DVDs only effects stuff that was poorly manufactured or specific types of recoverable CDs. DVDs will last hundreds of years if not longer.
i like watching old skate and bmx films on my vcr
skateboarding is still popular so a lot of the old videos have been given decent upscaling recently but bmx is basically dead at this point and all the old videos were ripped online 15 years ago so they're all 360p and practically unwatchable on a computer
I guess you bought that as a wall piece or something? VHS is an obsolete, inconvenient format that degrades with every playback. I'd maybe understand owning copies of ultra rare things that were edited or not re-released, but even then, I'd make a digital rip.
Zoomer scare tactics like this fail miserably. They dont degrage from playback, and i hate to tell you this people used to rent vhs cassettes and they got the shit played out of them.
We know how vhs works and they will continue to do so.
a buyer paid me 50€ for a couple of used up vhs tapes and magazines.
collectors with money buy all kinds of moronic shit and they dont care about the price.
VHS was no good for movies and I'm glad we're rid of it. You only get to see half the screen thanks to the aspect ratio. I MIGHT get something on VHS if it was made for video, and there is no LD rip, and the digital versions were ruined somehow.
It's like collecting 8-tracks. Most of them are worn out but even if you get a fresh one, it's just a shitty format. If you still enjoy it good for you.
>all these anons seething over tapes while their garbage plastic discs unwatchably skip from a hairline scratch
I used to get VHS instead of DVD from rentals and the library because of that. I bought new DVDs though because I wasn't moronic enough to destroy them.
VHS is only really like itself and betamax. Disc format has only superficial differences and doesn't last nearly as long. I prefer the noise, as it adds a more analog and mystical feeling to the viewing experience. Makes it feel more important. I don't really care about bluray special features or 4k 8k jargon BS. I just want something that feels warm and will last the longest. It's more based on if you keep your VCR working right than how you take care of the tapes, as long as you know what you're doing from the get go.
I do have some tapes and two functioning VCRs. Like I said, I will use tapes if those criteria are met. While they can be digitized, actually viewing them so they look as good as the original tape is a pain because of interlacing. HDMI and Displayport don't even support 480i. It can be done but not with the convenience of just using VHS.
I don't really care to have artefacts in my video. I can tolerate them of course, but I don't really enjoy looking at film grain or video noise or blocking, I'm just trying to watch a movie. To me a good digital version is the best.
BTW, when it comes to preservation, digital data can also be put on magnetic tape. Decades on it will be hard to get the tape drives for them or even VHS players and CRT tvs. I feel the only decent backup strategy is to keep several copies of my data on different devices. I can transfer that to whatever format may be used in the future.
Blah blah blah. I want to see my HPPD visual snow. I don't care bro. I keep telling you

They get noticeably worn out after maybe 100-200 watch/rewind cycles. A whole TV series probably won't be played that much unless it was a rental/library set but as a kid I wore out some tapes personally.

I bought a used VHS copy of Starship Troopers from a "vintage" hipster storefront and it's borderline unwatchable. Looks like it was probably watched 200 times. Same story with my used copy of MI:2. It swore me off buying any used tapes. Not even laserdisc has this issue
its a lot of money to spend on something thats worth like 5 bucks, you can find shit like this at a goodwill for a buck a piece
If you wait around trying to find shit like my pull on Craigslist or at some thrift store you'll be waiting til you're 92 anon. I live in a small town, and have limited means.
me but with laserdisc. Just bought the full Japanese set of On The Air
Cinemaphile please help me, i've been looking for a long time for an image of 2 stacks of VHS tapes. one side is coded red and the other blue, and the post said "which color are you watching"
>projecting this hard
I don’t collect DVDs either, moron
I’m so beyond you lmfao, what a pathetic little mind you must have to jump so quickly to seething and projection
I hope you enjoy your $200 streaming-only chromebook
It's not like discs get damaged automatically. they'll never be scratched if you just use them normally and put them back in the case when you're done. they should never even need to be cleaned.

>have a nice day, zoomer.
I'm GenX. OP seems pants on head moronic to me. This is some hipster bullshit? Why the frick would you want VHS? Are you stupid?
Note the VHS release of Twin Peaks omits the first episode/pilot film and you have to track down a separate long OOP "International Pilot Release" version of it and stop about 2/3rds of the way in, since the International pilot has material from the second episode remixed into a new context and a completely unrelated ending that was tacted on get funding for the pilot as it was sold over in Europe as a stand-alone film.
I hope you didnt pay $175 for this junk

Anyone who starts an internet comment with this word is a huge gay
Imagine seething like a wimpy homosexual over anons investing in the objectively superior form of physical media.

Why would I greentext a cold statement?
Imagine dragons
>can't imagine things
lmao you have no internal dialogue and get filtered by breakfast

>32k a year spent at the bar
>2 weeks salary
oh noo what am i gonna do now??
BAM
B..but it was graded
does this still play?
most tapes last decades longer than discs, as analog magnetic film has higher longevity than degrading plastic
Discs don't really degrade, I still have movies I bought in the mid 90s.
disc rot
not a thing. i still have blank cd's from like 25 years ago that burn fine.
disc rot
No such thing for most DVDs only effects stuff that was poorly manufactured or specific types of recoverable CDs. DVDs will last hundreds of years if not longer.
(You)
Outside of the rare bad printing anomaly disc rot only happens if you live in a swamp.
>$175 for VHS
yes, anon. unless you're buying shovelware trash or disney films, rare collector pieces are usually expensive
VHS belongs in the garbage, it's not a format you "collect" you fricking mongoloid.
zoom zoom
what's the point of wasting money on such dogshit quality
dogshit show for teenagers.
>/vr/
OK
>cartoons
If they were actually made for it, sure.
>shows and movies
Zoomers are moronic and misunderstand vinyl harder than millenials did.
Is Fire Walk with Me worth watching even if you haven’t seen the original series?
i think it would kinda spoil the original experience
Just watch the original series dumbass
No.
Figured it wouldn’t make sense. I’ll check out the first season
You'll need to see both seasons for it to make sense
Just watch season 1 and then Fire Walk With Me. Trust me
It's not even worth watching if you HAVE seen the original series
>we have a Jessica Harper spammer now
It's been a long time coming, she doesn't get enough love.
She really doesn’t.
Damn thats comfy
>paid
It hasn't been shipped, theres still time
"okay kids, in 1999 someone invented something called Napster, then people..."
why would you buy VHS instead of just downloading DVD rips? VHS was never good
I bought a VHS recently for an obscure movie because it’s the only version in full screen, barring a 35mm hard matte scan which will never happen
that makes sense. sometimes you can find those ripped by some autist online already
Maybe on a private tracker.
i like watching old skate and bmx films on my vcr

It's called "media preservation," but I'm sure a plebeian such as yourself wouldn't understand.
Shut the frick up.
Gooning homosexuals do not get to condescend anybody, not even in irony.

See
I can't believe how many morons are throwing out old porn. Literally sitting on gold.
i found a bondage vhs in a charity shop for 20p

Buy it, transfer it to digital, sell the digital copies through paypal.
I love analog audio. Is analog video worth it?
>all these anons seething over tapes while their garbage plastic discs unwatchably skip from a hairline scratch
OP here. I also purchased Lynch's Dune, as well as the filmé "Communion." Cope, my good anons. Cope, yes... Cope - and seethe.

Thanks to vhs we got open matte releases that showed extra actress nipple and pussy that was supposed to be cut out for theatres.
you're just making more work for the people who need to clean up your house when you die.
I'm only 24 kek jesus christ man
If you wait around trying to find shit like my pull on Craigslist or at some thrift store you'll be waiting til you're 92 anon. I live in a small town, and have limited means.
Baste
The point of the thrifting is to look for things in a broad sense. I picked up Ben-Hur on VHS for a buck and was pleasantly surprised.
>I'm only 24
oh excuse me mister immortal. enjoy eternity with all your garbage. I hope it collapses in on you and entombs you for a thousand years.
me but with laserdisc. Just bought the full Japanese set of On The Air
Be careful buying japanese discs of american stuff, they dub and sub them over there.
Just saying.
Graphics prostitutes are those worse tbth
I'm good since I picked up Twin Peaks from Z to A when it came out

eBay?

How big was beta Max compared to vhs (physical size)
Cinemaphile please help me, i've been looking for a long time for an image of 2 stacks of VHS tapes. one side is coded red and the other blue, and the post said "which color are you watching"
