The Star Trek Continues project that Vic Mignogna headed up is basically as faithful a reproduction of the filming technique, sets, props, and costuming of TOS as can realistically be made. It is for people that wanted more TOS exactly the way TOS looked when it was made and it does a pretty good job in that regard.
The actors playing the classic roles and episode scripts on the other hand are all wildly hit or miss but there are a few gems in there, like a pretty darn good follow-up to TOS's classic mirror universe episode.

Certainly the Klingons go against Federation ideals however, the shit the Gorn do would be far more unpalatable for the UFP to tolerate. The UFP may frown on Klingon civilisation however, at least Klingons do come across as an actual civilisation with aspects the UFP could reasonably understand, respect, appreciate etc.; meanwhile, the Gorn just come across monstrous and actively hostile. The Klingons also provide some geopolitical value to the UFP (e.g. balancing the Romulans, helping out in the Dominion War) and are too powerful to simply ignore or overcome. That’s kind of the point. I mean the gorn obviously evolved on some sort of death world where everything not of your species is trying to lay eggs in you or eat you or both. When they finally get off world, all the class-M planets they find are these smorgasbords of things that are both tasty AND not trying to kill them at every turn. Oh they came across a few alien ships every so often, but they’re crewed by idiots who are just as passive and tasty as anything on any habitable planet they find, and they don’t have any concept of how exploring works because they don’t assume everything they come across is “eat or be eaten”, so they shoot them down and take their shit. I mean the planets they come across are filled with tasty critters, but the aliens they come across are supposed to be apex predators themselves. Not as good at it as the gorn, but enough that every encounter is treated as hostile, because they don’t have a concept of cooperation between cultures. You either submit or die.
And that’s what makes them a challenging adversary in Trek. On a very basic level, the whole “mutual cooperation between species” is an entirely alien concept to them, and the federation having to work past that is an interesting story.

Not really. SNW has less episodes so it needed to be good right out the gate. There's no room for "improvement".
It's SNW 12 episode seasons VS 26 episode seasons of Voyager and ENT.
This could be fine if it was a cast of OC characters in the TOS era on a different ship. It's bizarre to try to replace the original cast when Shatner and Nimoy are so iconic and their story was already told.
That's the biggest problem with the Trek franchise. It's that everything now has to be a reboot or continuation or adhere to worst trends of contemporary filmmaking and sci-fi stories. The Golden age of Trek with TNG and DS9 and VOY were totally original properties that took risks and gambles and were created by people who had watched the same movies and read the same books Roddenberry watched and read. Now Trek is controlled by people who think original ideas are poison and that Captain Horatio or Mutiny on the Bounty are quirky millenial sex acts and even the fan content is just worse iterations of what the main studio is already doing but on a poorgays budget. The best Trek show we've gotten in 20 years is The Orville and if that's not the saddest proof that the franchise is as good as dead I don't know what is.
It's taken me about 10 months to get through it, but I'm just about finished with the complete TOS so I might check out an episode and see how it goes before I move on to the original Trek films.

He's somewhat right. I kept watching Discovery, hoping it would at some point have that positive, wholesome atmosphere that made me fall in love with Star Trek when I first watched TNG around 2013. I also tried watching Strange New Worlds. But these new Star Trek shows are always so grimdark. They don't ever let the viewer rest. Even when there's a simple scene where a character is eating or just chilling out, there's always a pressure in the atmosphere. None of the characters ever have chemistry. They're all like some sort of corporate stooges trying to one-up each other while pretending to be friends. Painful to watch.

All these fan films are cringe, from the bad acting to the ill-fitting costumes and sets that look even cheaper than the ones in TOS, but it's like some fans feel they have to embrace them to stick it to Paramount. As if you can't just reject both.
The Star Trek Continues project that Vic Mignogna headed up is basically as faithful a reproduction of the filming technique, sets, props, and costuming of TOS as can realistically be made. It is for people that wanted more TOS exactly the way TOS looked when it was made and it does a pretty good job in that regard.
The actors playing the classic roles and episode scripts on the other hand are all wildly hit or miss but there are a few gems in there, like a pretty darn good follow-up to TOS's classic mirror universe episode.
I never watched it but, I saw this posted in another thread. Seems pretty good monster design, in particular trying to go for something that could be from the TOS production era, for what I imagine was a shoestring budget by amateurs.

It doesn't really bother me much more than anybody being friendly with Klingons in the series that take place later. Canonically they're an interstellar war cult that feasts on the hearts of their enemies.
Certainly the Klingons go against Federation ideals however, the shit the Gorn do would be far more unpalatable for the UFP to tolerate. The UFP may frown on Klingon civilisation however, at least Klingons do come across as an actual civilisation with aspects the UFP could reasonably understand, respect, appreciate etc.; meanwhile, the Gorn just come across monstrous and actively hostile. The Klingons also provide some geopolitical value to the UFP (e.g. balancing the Romulans, helping out in the Dominion War) and are too powerful to simply ignore or overcome. What value and reason is there in the UFP tolerating the hostile Gorn?

I mean the planets they come across are filled with tasty critters, but the aliens they come across are supposed to be apex predators themselves. Not as good at it as the gorn, but enough that every encounter is treated as hostile, because they don’t have a concept of cooperation between cultures. You either submit or die.
And that’s what makes them a challenging adversary in Trek. On a very basic level, the whole “mutual cooperation between species” is an entirely alien concept to them, and the federation having to work past that is an interesting story.

This could be fine if it was a cast of OC characters in the TOS era on a different ship. It's bizarre to try to replace the original cast when Shatner and Nimoy are so iconic and their story was already told.
That's the biggest problem with the Trek franchise. It's that everything now has to be a reboot or continuation or adhere to worst trends of contemporary filmmaking and sci-fi stories. The Golden age of Trek with TNG and DS9 and VOY were totally original properties that took risks and gambles and were created by people who had watched the same movies and read the same books Roddenberry watched and read. Now Trek is controlled by people who think original ideas are poison and that Captain Horatio or Mutiny on the Bounty are quirky millenial sex acts and even the fan content is just worse iterations of what the main studio is already doing but on a poorgays budget. The best Trek show we've gotten in 20 years is The Orville and if that's not the saddest proof that the franchise is as good as dead I don't know what is.
It's taken me about 10 months to get through it, but I'm just about finished with the complete TOS so I might check out an episode and see how it goes before I move on to the original Trek films.

I also tried watching Strange New Worlds. But these new Star Trek shows are always so grimdark. They don't ever let the viewer rest. Even when there's a simple scene where a character is eating or just chilling out, there's always a pressure in the atmosphere. None of the characters ever have chemistry. They're all like some sort of corporate stooges trying to one-up each other while pretending to be friends. Painful to watch.
