The two closest things to an even fight for the US in the 20th century are Japan in WW2 and the Chinese in Korea. They decisively won the first, and eked out a draw in the second. The US military's actual performance is middling in fair fights.

I watched this movie last night and it was really kind of interesting how his politics changed. He was all patriotic and America love it or leave it when he went to Vietnam and even after he was wounded and saw war crimes he was still patriotic. It was only after society shit on him and all his peers were anti-war that he decided the war was bad. So it was peer pressure not personal experience that changed his politics.
