The point of the song is how the wealthy and well-connected were able to avoid the draft or entered the military in positions that were safe. John Fogerty, the songwriter of Fortune Son, got drafted and although he did not see combat that was down to luck rather than influence.
Which is funny because now it is played at certain political rallies to generate patriotic feelings towards those politicians who actually are indeed fortunate sons. But no one cares about the lyrics.
Same thing is true for Born in the USA. People just take the chorus and view the whole thing as some patriotic America frick yeah anthem ignoring the chorus being juxtaposed with verses about how war fricks up veterans and society doesn't really care about them.
ww2 infantry only saw about 40 days of combat time a year while in vietnam it was closer to 240 days a year. And you didn't even really know who you were fighting.
my uncle was a helicopter gunner in nam. they called him "shitty smitty". one time I put on some jimi hendrix when we were drinking and he said "...that's what we used to listen to killin asiatics".
at a homeless shelter in san Francisco the cook was a nam vet. I was able to shoot the shit since i worked mostly in kitchens and despite being homeless would cook weekends on his days off. Told me he visited a Vietnamese restaurant with his group in some city, he was always hard of hearing and didn't understand when the asiatic chef was laughing at Americans "you like pooch?" turns out it was well known the restaurant served dog and the good old boys would pull pranks on their army bros visiting. He said he was shocked, but the food was good.
I have worked with and been stationed with dozens of Vietnam vets and not one of them has every complained about it. LBJ and Nixon discovered fairly early on that draftees were worse than no troops at all. They had a generally negative value. They continued to use them just to kill young blacks.
Forrest Gump, dumbass
It’s just Forrest Gump. You won’t find Fortunate Son on the soundtrack for any other major Vietnam War film.
and COD Black Ops
Bet the troops hated that song because contrary to Hollywood most of them were volunteers

Fonz never said Ayy! while pointing two thumbs at himself.
why did she do it
She’s a dumb b***h
The feels. She couldn’t resist the feels. Then she married Ted Turner which is arguably worse
When Elvira worked as a go-go dancer at some place, young soldiers would cry on her shoulder about being sent to war.
