Well problem is when he starts killing people outside of criminals, and then there's the chance that some of said criminals are innocent. No way a show portraying police as evil would fly, but the son of a policeman having the power to kill? Death Note is inspired by the fact that Japanese judicial system is corrupt, from police to court. JP courts have a near 100% conviction rate, and police will obfuscate cases for the sake of public image if they are too difficult to solve. Over 90% of "suspects" are caught, which is too good to be true. This given with no bar on how long it takes to interrogate or detain said suspects. To avoid effecting homicide rate, many cases of murder and foul play are ruled as natural deaths with only 1/10 of cases having autopsies, most often the diagnosis being heart attack.

He's an idiot because his whole plan is a souped up version of the "death penalty as deterrent" argument, and going by states that have death penalty vs those that don't, executing criminals just doesn't have a significant effect of crime.
If Light was truly intelligent, he might try to use the death note to tackle elements that are actually causal to crime. The biggest of those is poverty.

You say that, but Death Note itself really doesn't linger on this fact at all, if it's even brought up in any significant manner.
Kira is wanted because extrajudicial killing is murder, even if the murder victims are convicts. It's as simple as that.

because it would detract from the show and would require a lot of learning of procedure on authors' part to actually implement right, but a court case around a death note user actually does sound interesting if done right, especially from defendant/prosecutor perspective

i just saw 10000+ wwetoids or asiatics who mention japan's near 100% conviction rate and almost all of them had no idea what they were actually talking about so i just find it a bit deppressing

      >villain is evil because…he kills violent criminals…

So if you actually want to reduce crime, you need to make positions in our world that have an exacerbating effect on poverty, impossible to occupy.
Write the name of every owner, head warden, & major shareholder of a private prison into the Death Note. When those positions are occupied by someone new, kill them too. People will get the message fast and refuse to occupy those roles, and they will have to stop doing private prisons.
Then do the same for payday loan services and other predatory lending & credit people.
If you remove these institutions that actually trap people into poverty, then people will be able to escape it, and crime will go down.

Of course, Light is incapable of thinking this way because he doesn't recognized any institutions as flawed or predatory. He only sees there being bad individuals who need to be culled from the population. So he's incapable of creating positive systemic change.

the problem with what you're saying is that a vast majority of people don't commit crimes of necessity - Black folk and hispanics are out there doing drive-by shootings on parties with children at them, cutting heads off, stealing useless luxury goods - sometimes just for the thrill of stealing and running from the law - raping, and generally being rabid animals. poverty isn't a cause of crime so much as it is a social comorbidity of shit government, shit judicial and penal systems, and dysgenic practices. being poor doesn't help but i've been poor all my life as are all the people i live around and they aren't criminal pieces of shit. doesn't help your argument that plenty of "poor" people actually live like kings off of abused social services. it's as simple a matter as getting rid of the trash.
it's why europe became a utopia relative to the rest of the world, they'd been ruthlessly killing all their troublemakers for thousands of years and at some point all they were mostly left with was loyal, civil, obedient, generally kind people. africa hasn't been doing that, india hasn't been doing that, south america hasn't been doing that, parts of asia haven't been doing that, and now contemporary america isn't doing it - if anything a lot of them do the opposite and implicitly reward sociopathy, malice, greed, and egotism.

BUT i will say as an addendum that i do partially agree that already dumb races are much more inclined to be pieces of shit when their environment and the people around them are trash. broken window theory and all that. still doesn't change the fact we live among masses of barely functioning animal-people waiting to snap over nothing. those people will NEVER be able to be helped even if you gave them the world. it will take hundreds of years of generationally, genetically taking out the trash to see an earth of good peoples of all races. but that will never happen because even though everyone knows exactly what i'm saying they're too cowardly or too blinded by naive falsities spun up by deceivers and people who profit off evil and chaos to admit it

Because moronic laws make it so that it takes 50 years before an inmate is actually executed. The only people who are actually intimidated by the death penalty are jurors who end up not wanting potential blood on their hands so otherwise guilty criminals end up walking just because the prosecution got overly wienery. The way its structured right now makes the entire process pointless and unbeneficial

Light was a schizo narcissist in denial almost immediately. He prioritized challenging L and reveling in his cult of personality to refining society through justice. You could argue he needed to defeat L and by extension the world's resistance to him to establish a direct authority on the world but he was obviously insane. Whether that was all him or the Death Note is like Sauron's ring is debatable.

I've read the author's other works and Death Note was his magnum opus. Bakuman was a neat look inside the manga industry and gives the audience the behind the scenes of how it all goes down. Consider it almost like a documentary in the form of a generic story.
Platinum End was a battle royale where he was trying to do the intellectual battles that DN had but fell short in the execution. The main character was a loser and his strategies had to be fittingly dumb. The best character was someone smart but they didn't last. The author should've stuck to that kind of perspective but I get how trying to differentiate yourself from previous works would lead someone away.
