Lawrence of Arabia made the vast expanse of desert look interesting. Villeneuve made the desert look like someone's vacation snapshots on a 4mp camera.

Tbf, the race swapping was probably not up to him. Definitely a Studio decision to meet diversity quotas. Especially now that it's required for Oscar nominations.

They had dinner parties and opulent wealth in the books. For some reason in the movies all the rich people sleep on concrete slabs.

The dinner party scene was actually part of the movie but again, the studio interfered and cut it out to reduce the movie's run time.

Warner Brothers is famous for interfering and cutting shit down. They literally do this shit all the time.
Hopefully we'll get a director's cut which will include the scene.

GOT showed general audiences can tolerate mildly complicated political intrigue. We'll see if the cut material in a director's edition improves on that, but it's bare bones. Killing Kynes off that early introduces problems and the chintsy VFX in visionary scenes doesn't inspire confidence in what has to come.

I remember seeing Arrival and feeling like the look of the film was missing the spark Villeneuve's previous work had.
Of course - it was one of the movies he didn't work with Deakins on.

I do wonder how often it happens where the cinematographer ends up making the director look 10x better than he actually is (I feel Lubezki also does this with certain filmmakers)

Baron harkonnen is clever and cool-headed, the only thing Lynch captured beyond him being generally evil, was his sadism. His baron being an unhinged lunatic, to say nothing of the weird disease fetish, is a serious deviation from the books

That said it makes for a pretty novel and entertaining villain

            Anonymous

I find it kind of amazing that filmmakers can embark on making a Dune movie and not realize that, above everything else (even his appetites), the Baron is a schemer and manipulator. His conversation with Piter and Feyd about the control mechanisms of addiction, same with his rumination about Nefud's addiction to Semuta, the plot to have Jessica and Paul killed 'indirectly', his conversation with Fenring in which he immediately starts plotting to put himself on the throne if charges are brought against him, his control of Thufir with a latent poison and with false information, etc
Really fricking astounding given how obvious it is

I reject both. Villeneuve's doesn't have any depth and Lynch's was disgusting for the sake of being disgusting, and silly on top of that: impossible to take seriously.
To be sure, the book describes Baron Harkonnen as 'grossly fat' and similar many times, but any depiction of him that doesn't stress his exceptional cunning simply isn't a true one, and he's not at all clownish like in Lynch's version.

I had no idea what Dune was, hadn't even seen the trailer for it. Before I went to the theater to watch it, I took about 3 grams of mushrooms and it was a completely mindblowing experience. I've never been more enthralled by a movie. No idea how good it actually is though. Gonna do the same thing to Dune # 2

At least Lynch managed to make Arrakis look truly alien with ancient looking black rock outcroppings.

I haven't seen any Dune movies yet. That said looking at these images.... if the rest of the film is this bland looking... damn.
Was Villeneuve a Deakins-babby? I remember feeling like Arrival was the first movie from him I saw where the cinematography just didn't impress me, and he didn't work with Deakins on that film.

The difference between both pics is that Dune is set around the year 10,000 and Siwa is a 5,000 year old Oasis. So of course the architecture in Dune is going to be more futuristic, but it will still follow the same tone.

Random question - is Dune shot on film or digital?

        Anonymous

You know the answer but there are ways to make digital have a film feel. They are choosing to make their cinematography look like flat shit.

          Anonymous

Oh yeah I agree. I personally think film looks better than digital, but that doesn't mean digital NEEDS to look like crap.
Case in point - Lubezki makes fantastic, beautiful imagery and he works in digital.

I mentioned it before, I wonder if Villeneuve would've benefited from working with Deakins on the Dune films like he did on all of his other, better looking ones.

There are a few things I don't understand about the Dunc universe, if some book nerds could clarify please.
So Duke Leto is in charge of his whole planet, right? But when he leaves it who's in charge? What about the population who lives there, is there any population actually? Or jsut his army? I assume his soldiers have families, but it doesn't look like any families moved to Arrakis, so then what happens to Caladan when the Atreides gets "destroyed"?

      >So Duke Leto is in charge of his whole planet, right?
      Of Arrakis, yes.
      >But when he leaves it who's in charge?
He doesn't leave it in the book; if he did, I'd presume it would be his consort or a regent.
      >What about the population who lives there, is there any population actually?
Yes, a relatively large population of Fremen (natives).
      >I assume his soldiers have families, but it doesn't look like any families moved to Arrakis
Presumably they brought their families, but it's never discussed in the book.
      >what happens to Caladan when the Atreides gets "destroyed"?
IIRC, the Raban clan takes it over when the Atreides move to Arrakis
DUNC was shit, BTW, and Villememe sucks.

It's never made clear in the books, but it probably reverted back to the emperor. Which doesn't make a lot of sense since the harkonnens kept their "main" planet.

        >so then what happens to Caladan when the Atreides gets "destroyed

not explained. its all skipped over. the second book takes place like 20 years after the first book ends and none of it is fleshed out

Not true, the second books mentions Jessica returns to Caladan once the JIHAD got underway so Paul hasn't seen her for years until she returns in the second or third book.
The Atreides keep Caladan, why would they lose it?

One thing I didn't like in the movie is the lack of common folk. The movie was too focused on the big wigs. It's like the entire universe is just a few families and their soldiers. You don't see anything about the civilizations on the artreides planet and barely anything on arrakis. You see a guy watering plants, some slaves and some harvester pilots. The rest of the movie is a bunch of big wigs in empty halls and them talking to servants and soldiers. Rhe worlds didn't feel alive or filled with people at all. It was 100% kings court drama.
