She's real because you see her reflection in the mirror when Paulie doesn't. Spooky shit.

The way it was filmed was definitely spooky but in all reality it would be unfathomable awesome to see an apparition of The Mother of God.

Seeing a Marian Apparition means you’ve done wrong by a good woman and heaven is on your ass if you don’t change your ways. The Holy Mother is saying she knows what Paulie did, in disgracing his mother

        Anonymous

Was that right after the scene with him going off on his mom? I guess that'd make sense but I never heard about the 'heaven on your ass' thing that coincides with the vision.

          Anonymous

Yes this is after Paulie disowns his mom, and right after he decides to love and take care of her. Angels can appear to indicate you’ve taken a wrong path and heaven is watching

I don't doubt that. I saw a sign after my brother's death that put to rest a lot of pain I was feeling, so I can believe it.

It can also mean good things but if you scream at and disown your mother and then see one then yes it’s an disciplinary invitation to change you ways

Something about how she was portrayed entirely realistically is unsettling.

Realistic as in full on Lourdes apparition attire? I agree

It was also unsettling because it was framed as a jump scare with a jarring guitar riff

Realistic as in it was just some normal woman in some normal cloth. There was no mystical effect or lighting added. It was played completely straight. That level of realism made her floating pose creepier.

God, heaven and hell are all real in The Sopranos, the implication being that most if not all of the major characters are going to hell. But Paulie lives through the whole show and the Virgin Mary appears to him. Does that mean he can be saved? If so, why would God choose him?

      Anonymous

Paulie is deeply superstitious and believes Catholicism literally, like a classic Christian with no metaphors or anything, even if he’s really dumb about how that’s supposed to work. The other characters get a lot of signs throughout their stories, this is after Tony dreamt about going to hell in his coma and started to become a better person, before he got bored and selfish and decided to never change. Paulie is just the only who believes enough to take it really fricking seriously when he screams at his mom and then the Mother Mary shows up to indicate she’s watching and judging him, so he changes and loves his mother. Then he’s one of the last survivors of the crew who isn’t dead or in a coma or maybe dead in a restaurant and such. Possibly because he knows there’s more to live for, like his mother, than to just die on some selfish hill somewhere

I agree. In my opinion, ‘Kennedy & Heidi’ is when Tony reached the point of no return. Hence why he looks like an evil possessed clown in that episode and why pic related is shown at the casino.

Once you begin to see the religious symbolism, you notice it everywhere and wonder how you ever missed it before. Mad Men is another example of a show that’s very overlooked in this regard.

Supper natural powers exist in the sopranos. Tony can dream walk, Paulie can see/talk to the dead, Carmela can freeze time, and some made guys can turn into a fricking house.

The supernatural aspects of Sopranos are utter kino and really elevate the show beyond "le crime show". It makes things more real in a sense, just like the dreams.
