Alien demonstrated a respect for the violence on display. Each character is unique and memorable and serves a narrative purpose that isn't exclusively being killed. Alien also had the good sense to imply horrible violence rather than provide a gratuitous view of, say, the Alien veganally impaling Lambert until she died. AVPR has no respect for its characters or its violence. It's a film that is made with nihilism.
