many long drives in my 20's were fraught with despair and loneliness, and catching a weird college station with an actual person DJ for an hour was very reassuring. I never wanna lose that stuff completely.

I found out people I know in real life prefer it like this. It's strange to me but I guess it's less stressful at the end of the day for some. No pressure to decide on what to watch, no pressure to actually stay invested until the end of the movie. They actually enjoy being at the mercy of having only a few things to pick from.
I plan on setting up a mini PC full of hundreds of downloaded movies and shows and I'm going to use that program that formats everything into cable for my family.

I hate any kind of abonnement so I've never payed for netflix, Spotify or whatever. If I say I use torrents most people go "omg I'm scared of the viruses". I think back to my childhood and remember how many kino TV shows and movies I've stumbled into just by channel surfing into them halfway through and going "what the frick is going on here?" This is unironically a good option for any streaming service to have.

Almost. After the channels, they'll start adding increasing amounts of ads until it's worse than TV used to be. But no, the enshitification won't end there... they'll start migrating certain shows and movies to only being available on those channels, which will then be filled with ads. They have to be careful though. this is like when one airline raises a price, waits a few hours, and if the others don't match the raise they back off for a while.
