Great film. But the fact that the main character is clearly an Englishman who makes no attempt whatsoever to disguise his accent and that no one comments on him being an outsider is slightly distracting.
I think it works, he’s pretentious and thinks himself above his situation. They comment on his demeanor when they snidely refer to him as a teacher I think.
The English weren't outsiders in Australia at that time. Educated people would often affect an English accent because it was considered more proper.
I think that's fair enough, though I suspect his being English would have at least been commented on in a working-class town in the middle of the Outback. It seems like a strange decision to me but it's easy enough to ignore when the film gets going.
They might have called him a pommy bastard or something in real life, but he is repeatedly asked if it's his first time in the Yabba so he is viewed as being outside the community.
Cinemaphile always recommends great films to me, but my friends never want to watch them so they stay in my backlog for months and months until i finally decide to watch them alone
Watching this movie as a kid, it depresses me because it was reflective of my Dad's alcoholism.
Watching it as an adult, I realised this is just me and my mates. >Is all you people do drink? You could shoot someone and thats alright but you refuse to have a drink with them and you scream bloody murder. >you're mad ya bastard
here are some more great Australian films to keep on topic with the thread >Animal Kingdom >Bad Boy Bubby >Breaker Morant >Celia >Chopper >Gallipoli >The Last Wave >Long Weekend >The Loved Ones >Mary and Max >Picnic at Hanging Rock >The Proposition >Snowtown >Roadgames >Romper Stomper >The Rover >The Turning >Where the Green Ants Dream
