It's why ww1 is one of my favorite subjects, literally no European country knew how to wage war against other industrialized countries and had no idea of the consequences. The first few months of the war were incredibly chaotic and thousands of (calvary) men were ordered to run in to machine gun fire because neither the men nor the commanders knew any better

the crimean war, american civil war, french and prussian war and the italian wars of unification were already miserable experiences for everyone involved and "modern" wars in a sense, but with less trench warfare and heavy artillery. the writing was already on the wall and the italian wars even led to the creation of the red cross because wounded soldiers were dying at horrific rates.
there was never any honor in war for the generations that experienced it, they were always glorifying the last generation's war like you are doing now.

The dumbest part of the remake was not including the most important scene when the main character returns to Germany. It literally resonates the entire theme the book/movie wants to carry over. Instead they added some Compiègne Wagon scenes to it which added nothing to the movie other than making it feel like a documentary for morons
