That digital meta-actress premise they tried to pull was legitimately interesting at least.

    >1995 : Toy Story

    >1999 : Toy Story 2
    >2001 : Shrek, Final Fantasy Spirits Within, Monsters Inc, Jimmy Neutron
    >2002 : Ice Age
early years of theatrical fully CG animation films were interesting

      >All those 2001 movies

      What an eclectic bunch.

It was a mistake to try to make a movie for all audiences. Most of the games are set in their own universe but they should have put in some more references and stuff for fans. Plus they spent so much on it when it flopped, Enix was able to buy them and put out an FF movie fans wanted.

Advent Children is shit. And Enix merged with Squaresoft not bought them.

They called it "Final Fantasy" and then proceeded to not have any swords and sorcery, chocobos, Bahamut, airships, ANYTHING, and even fricking spelled the Cid character's name "Sid." Gee, I wonder why the built in audience for the brand didn't do anything to save ticket sales when normies decided not to watch a boring sci-fi film where the entire hook was "everyone can tell this tech is not ready yet" CG animation.

      >"everyone can tell this tech is not ready yet" CG animation.
And yet still superior to everything ever made by Pixar. Weird how that happens.

Thread's not about Pixar, site's not your blog, no one cares about your hateboner.

Too bad that "better looking humans than Toy Story 1" isn't something people go to the theaters for. Comparisons to Pixar and Dreamworks are irrelevant, Spirits Within - in a vacuum - was a bad movie and will be remembered as the first and most grievous bad decision made by a company that for the rest of our lives now will never be able to stop making games that have Cloud and Sephiroth in them because that's the only thing that makes enough money to cover their mistakes.

it was the first theatrical CG film to get negative reviews. Shark Tale was the second

It was a clear attempt to sell the JRPG format to normies by scrubbing off anything that could be perceived as ANIME from it; basically what Pacific Rim is to the mecha genre.

The only thing this movie did right is make the first decent attempt at realistic humans. So people who pretend Shrek or worse Pixar did a good job? To hell with you.

      >Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Shrek, Spirits Within
first CG films with human characters, in that order. There were also CG shorts like Geri's Game which started humans

I can't stand the dub. Is there a Japanese track somewhere?

That movie failed because people who don't play video games don't know what a Final Fantasy is and people who did play FF would be disappointed because it has nothing to do with FFVII.

For the later group, this is the movie they wanted.

It failed because it was a movie that claimed to be a Final Fantasy movie and wasn't in the slightest.

And this shit was just 90% "SEPHIROTH IS COMING" and then Sephiroth fights Cloud and gives him a thumbs up and disappears. Trying to be deep and epic and really just padding for a brief fight which is the only thing people cared about.

2001 was a neat year for animated films

I feel thats the year animation peaked, both 2d and 3d coexisted and were trying their best and being experimental; next year Treasure Planet flopped and that the point in which you could start to see 3d clearly taking the lead.

They fricked up by not actually having it resemble Final Fantasy at all. 2001 was just a year before LotR came out. Audiences would have obviously eaten up a good quality movie with swords and magic and monsters.
