Was cyclops always lame before he made his own x-men outside of prof x?
My eyes almost always glaze over when Cyclops is in shit. It just seems everything about him is just so boring. His powers are lame, eye beams. His personality is lame, just leader man. His design is lame, default super hero with Geordi la forge glasses (but not as cool as jordi's). AM I missing something?
Was he grandfathered into shit just because he was in the original?

Just to answer the OP's stupid question, Cyclops was always the "Xavier away from Xavier, the subordinate who always tried to keep everyone on the straight an narrow and lawful when Daddy Wheelchair wasn't present. In other words he was a Square.

When they finally decided to make him an interesting character.
He was always lame and Marvel realized that and never gave him a long running series. Even in a schlocky way he wasn't accepted by the fanbase. Even his brother has more memorable stories
He was the generic bland mid guy for self inserters like those anime isekai protagonists.
The thing that puts me off of this angle tho is that Self inserts usually have some kind of super special something about them. Like an anti-power field, or even being notably weak. but Cyclops is just painfully mediocre in everything. Not even being notably weak.

No. its like a second rate batman villian power (not even notably obscure like a third rate polka dot man kind of villian). Obviously useful for a little bit of firepower, but just conceptually bland.
As much shit as he gets for being lame because he's seen as a boy scout, we've already seen that reasoning is bullshit. For more than half a century, Superman was one of DC's biggest properties, sold a ton of merch, and had a lot of media made about him, and he's THE boy scout for the company. Captain America for Marvel was also quintessential boy scout for Marvel, and he was huge in World War 2, and even if he fell off a bit afterward until the MCU boosted him to worldwide popularity, people still resonated with and loved the guy.
So, what's Cyclops's excuse? If he wasn't being made fun of, he was always just seen as being kind of there. How is it that Supes and Cap could have a clean image and have periods of huge success while Cyclops never had that same experience?
Cause Cap and Super man have shticks.
Even if Cap is a boyscout, It allows the author to play with the ideals and idea of America. Thats just a lot of inspiration right there even if ignoring the character itself.
And Superman isnt just a boyscot, hes THE boyscout. and has a shtick of being particularly powerful and having to deal with the consequences of that exceptionality. Again, even outside the character of Clark himself. The whole grew up as a normal kid with good parents in a small sleepy town and trying to bring a down-to-earth humanity in a more than human person.
While Cyclops is just A mutant. one of many. he doesnt have a particular bent in his concept by itself. And his particular character insnt any more predisposed to anything then any other. he just kind of IS the leader guy because the source material says he is.
