I guess the idea is that hank is too arrogant and walt is so meek in his eyes that the idea of him committing any sort of crime would never cross his mind but yeah the lab equipment is enough to put walt under the microscope and that's pretty much at the start of the investigation there's also an established link between walt and massive suspect jesse any idiot could see it it's moronic
He handles the lab equipment thing well, Hank does come to him with the gasmask and all Walt had to say was we had some kids breaking in and that was enough for Hank because he was blinded by his personal relationship.

The whole show is happening in the span of two years which makes it way worse in my opinion.
One of Walt's biggest advantages was that he was family to Hank. Love blinds people. Hank's brain wouldn't let him entertain the possibility of Walt being Heisenberg for more than two seconds because the idea is too painful, so he'll naturally do any mental gymnastics necessary to believe it's anyone else.

What feel like a huge concession to me was the security recordings when Walt stole the barrels. IRL Hank would recognize the mannerisms and the way Walt moves and behaves.
