it’s the weakest renaissance movie, even compared to hunchback or pocahontas
which is a shame because it definitely has a unique artstyle and color palette not seen often in disney. it definitely was better as a tv show
>pocahontas
what? no, Hercules has >Better Main Protagonist >Better side characters >Better Villain by wide margin >It's more fun
Pocahontas >Colours in the wind >It's prettier?
And that's it, also not to mention both films are poorly based in their original stories but Pocahontas was real
>Mine Mine Mine is super underrated
So was "Savages." And sadly, the thing they have in common (hint: what's in their lyrics) is the main reason why people refuse to acknowledge how good they are.
I watched it with a friend who has no invested interest in Disney and hasn't seen any of the Renaissance films, but enjoys animation all the same. He said Hercules was just okay and that the Gospel music carries it. If they went with any other direction of music, he would've gotten bored. By comparison, he loved Tarzan, Lilo & Stitch, and Atlantis.
It's pretty good. It's a fantastic musical apart from the fact that Hades doesn't have a real villain song, as good a performance he gives I don't think James Wood could ever convincingly sing. Probably give him something Sinatra or Dean Martin-esque as a contrast to the Motown-Gospel style of the Muses.
Herc himself is kind of a problem, they deliberately set out to have a more interesting male lead than the last sixty or so years of feature animation and they only really half-succeeded.
As a kid already read (a kids version) of Hercules and I got really mad that the movie wasn't following the original story of Hercules and that Hades was the villain and not Hera
It would have been pretty hard to make Hera the villain without having the actual issues she had against Heracles in the myth, Disney would sooner gay representation (which they push for now) than ever let kids know terrible marriages exist and infidelity runs amok in said tainted relationships.
Hunchback, Hercules, and Pocahantas all suffered from Disney attempting to tackle more mature stories without being able to fully commit.
They all fail to elevate the source material.

Hunchback is worse. At least Hercules is entertaining, and visually the artstyle is appealing.
Hunchback has a killed OST. Frick you.
Probably Menken's best actual score, even if half the songs are kind of throwaway. Ominous Latin chanting is a surefire aural enhancer.

Mine Mine Mine is super underrated but everything else yeah, Hercules bodies it.

>Hunchback
What! That's one of my favourites. Minus the gargoyles.
Yeah

It's a pretty average movie. Visually however it's definitely one of my favourite Disney flims. I love the art style.
Never understood why ancient greece looked like vegas

Yes.
Man, the fluffy fandom really ruined this image for me

I liked it, and the animated series.
S'pretty good. Good hero's journey. Bad mythology lesson.
It's dangerous to go alone. Here, take this baby pegasus.
Frick you, stupid flying horse.
I loved it.
