Was high school teacher the best he could do?

He isn't very good at teaching, and clearly hates it

Definitely not. Making him a nobel level genius was a mistake.

he's not a Nobel-tier genius who created some revolutionary chemical method
he's simply a skilled chemist whose autism allows him to create an extremely pure final product and create that product from precursor chemicals other clandestine cooks are incapable of refining efficiently

you think the cooks at Pfizer and Teva corps can't make pure meth? meth is not a diabolical puzzle of chemistry it's relatively basic. the premise in the show is that even Gus and cartels can't just hire opsec-compliant super chemists on tap

in reality cartels can probably find guys like Gale and unlike Walt's claim it really is "good enough"

Yeah that plot-point wasn't very believable. Given his qualifications and experience, assuming he truly wanted to teach (and your right, he didn't seem like a good teacher and he definitely did seem to hate it) he could have taught Chemistry to Masters and Ph.D students at literally any College or University on earth. The show clearly states that he founded a business that became a multi-billion dollar conglomerate, with those qualifications he probably could have been the head of a Chemistry department anywhere, even. It tried to justify his being a Highschool chemistry teacher by him being upset and depressed about being kicked out of Dark Matter and generally being a pushover but that wasn't very believable either. In Better Call Saul they also retroactively make it even less believable when Saul talks about how he should have sued them for what would amount to illegally removing him from the company, and if he were actually this chemistry whizz and criminal mastermind he would have. I guess the 'old Walt' was more of a pushover which is why he didn't.

Yeah it definitely has a few holes in terms of plot believability, but then again so do most shows if you really sit right down and think about them.

are you people moronic? Walt being someone who didn't live up to his potential and knows he could have done more with his life is literally a key plot point to the entire series

he sold his shares, how would that make sense?

It was implied he was forced and intimidated to do so, but didn't want to, and that's grounds for a lawsuit and litigation. He's bitter about it whenever Gray Matter is brought up. If he were smart enough to found a revolutionary corporation with groundbreaking breakthroughs in Chemistry, which would require a ton of legal understanding and organization to do, he would have known his legal recourse in the event of a business coup d'état.

Take Facebook for example. The exact same thing happened to Eduardo Saverin: He co-founded Facebook but was slowly phased our through shady, backroom legal agreements, and he sued Facebook for a few billion dollars. Same thing happened to Walt, and if he were truly that person who founded the company he would have sued for his proper compensation.

I like Breaking Bad, but this is probably one of the most unbelievable plot points of the show. Doesn't lessen my enjoyment of it.

it definitely didn't make too much sense, but I just chalked it up to the fact that he took a HS teaching job in the interim while his wife was pregnant, and then his child was born with special needs so suddenly he had to take on a 2nd job so Skylar could stay home, and had all his time completely occupied

when people work perfect 40 hour weeks it's easy to say they should find new work, but it really does happen where people in dire financial situations get stuck in bad jobs because they have to spend all their time occupied with working

Walt punished himself by becoming a high school teacher and working at the car wash. He didn't want to be anything more because he felt he didn't deserve it

That's the argument they make, but it isn't the most believable recourse given the type of person he would have to be to found a billion dollar corporation

        >gets cucked by his best friend

        >kid is born moronic
Walt was a wienery confident man in the one flashback where they're checking out their house. So he had a lot to lose, once he fell he just didn't want to get up. What I don't get is why he left that company he was working at in that flashback. It sounded big, at least the guy showing them the house implied as much

          >Walt was a wienery confident man in the one flashback where they're checking out their house
Walt in that flashback was Walt after he had already been kicked out of Gray Matter, no? Because Sky was pregnant in that scene iirc, and Gray Matter Walt would have been touring mansions, not a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house in the burbs. He was confident in that scene, but I interpreted that 'confidence' as affected and contrived, as a man trying to keep it together and be optimistic about the future, as a man trying to be the rock for his wife and family, even though he knew it was grim compared to his previous accomplishments and successes.

they kept alluding to some career he had after Grey Matter at Los Alamos or some other government lab out there.
going from Grey Matter to that is pretty reasonable but going from that to teaching public high school makes no frickin sense.
I guess we just assume he let his ego start some shit that got him blacklisted from any sort of work like that?

      Anonymous

Maybe Elliot had enough sway to get him blacklisted from the industry.
But would he really do it? And even if he did, would GreyMatter's rivals care?

  10. 11 months ago

no, but going into teaching was a means of saving face for Walt
if he took another position at a company, even a high ranking one, he would still think as it professing his failure because it's not his company
he would still be working for someone else
while that's true as a teacher, it has the smokescreen of the "noble pursuit of teaching the next generation"
he has a built in cope for his settlement of mediocrity

I think it was because of Skyler, she was probably too critical and risk-adverse for Walt to get another job and relocate or something.

With his experience and degree he would land a 80k job with petrochemical companies in Houston. Also NM has lots of oil in the south. He'd easily get a job there or in West Texas. Then transfer to Houston.
In 4 years he'd be making 140k easily. The show highlights his management skills. In 10 years Walt would be a senior level executive at some oil and gas company easily making 250k or more with tons of benefits and perks.
