Mainstream Trek 'nerds' love all (new) things Trek because it is Trek. STD, LD, STP suck? You must not be a fan, no matter the reasoning. A new show is coming out from the producers of them, what do you mean you don't want to watch it? You must be a ~ist. There are no standards or taste, consuming is based on the product name alone and dissension from this is bad and wrongthink.

Sad but true. I have a glimmer of hope for the true believers though. A little history lesson. In the mid-00s, Wizards of the Coast released D&D 4e. As with 3e, it was a complete rules system overhaul that many were not on board with. This led to a schism in the RPG industry. s.
Some players wanted to play even older versions of D&D than even 33. TSR was a dead company by the late 90s though. No digital versions of those rule books existed except poor scans at best. Wizards was not about to publish them either since they had a new edition to market.
So dedicated nerds transcribed the AD&D rules. They made the entire text legally distinct from all copyrighted and trademarked elements. They reorganized the rules for the sake of use, and then they released OSRIC. This was a milestone of a grassroots movement called "Old School Renaissance."
The OSR did the same thing to other old versions of D&D. These were "retro-clones." Labyrinth Lord was a clone of B/X D&D, Swords & Wizardry was Original D&D, Darkest Dungeons was Rules Cyclopedia D&D, and so on. This inspired other designers to revisit the old D&D rules and tweak them for new original takes on the rules. It became a cottage industry, and some ideas even influenced WOTC's 5th edition of D&D.
The nerds must turn their backs on the companies that turned their backs on them. They have to make their own versions of what they love with blackjack and hookers. They must gatekeep against people who want to subvert the hobby. Never forget.
