There's legitimately no good reason out there. Just seems like someone at NBC decided they didn't want to do it. The cancellation was really unexpected, season 4 even ends on a cliffhanger. The ratings had dropped a bit but nothing remotely extraordinary and they will still overall healthy. The creators apparently tried to get another network to pick it up but they all wanted to change the show so in the end they just let it die.

Nah, Greg Garcia just spoke about it in general terms that they'd need to be compromising the creative voice of the show or something so they opted to not bastardise the show instead. I am surprised someone NBC didn't throw some cash at them now to do a final season and stick it on their streaming service considering how desperate those services all are for original content that has an existing audience but I guess everyone has just moved on.

it suffered with the writers strike, they had to trim fat to move leno to 10pm
none of their comedies at the time were big hits, even the office wasn't a success at the time
I genuinely have no memory of any developments in this show despite watching a lot of it. All blends together into a giant mess of the exact same shit.

This was good too. Same creator and a lot of the same actors in recurring roles and even has a mini Earl reunion episode
