      >Was it real?
      >So if you’ve been thinking that Total Recall was just a dream, you’re right. And if you’ve been thinking that it was all really happening, you’re right too. It’s not that the film doesn’t tell you whether it’s a dream or not, it’s that the film works both ways simultaneously, to give you two experiences at the same time.

actually, its masterfully executed. it needs to be ambiguous to work. its LITERALLY part of the narrative, so the viewer, (You) feels exactly like Arnie does.

Solely because it's a philip k. dick plot, everything was the furthest fricking thing from real.
He experienced a cute VR video game adventure, woke up, paid for the service and then went home to rub one out.

Next day wake up early again for work.

Or not. I think these assumptions are honestly moronic.

If you went back in time and told people that they can play ''video games'' and hang out in fake worlds, some times with other people and have adventures, some fricks would have exactly the same idea as you. We would adapt.

Yeah it really happened, it couldn't have been a memory implant if there was multiple scenes happening without him being present to witness them

      Anonymous

It was not real. The scenes shown where Quaid is not present is just for the benefit of the viewer.

There is no possible way to explain the image of the prostitute on the machine's screen before Quaid goes into it other than that everything is fake.

It’s possible that as he was dozing off high on drugs he imagined her face on the screen. It does go out of focus which is a trick implying that the camera view is subjective. If, however, you choose to be an absolutist about what was recorded on camera you actually probably are right because the people at recall could not have made an exact version of melena based on that short description of being brunette, sleazy and athletic but the machine could be extracting the images from his subconscious his head was near the machine and we don’t know what sort of tech this is.

It only looked real because it was Arnold as the main character so everything was believable. In the novel, it was just an average Joe officer worker who wasn't in shape so obviously none of it happened.

But it did happen. He was a secret agent who just got back from a trip to Mars. That's why he wanted to go to Mars and why they wouldn't implant false memories of it, the false memories of not going couldn't override his true desire to do it. Total Recall is about the immutability of desire and how desire can emerge from fulfillment

There's no reason to make it play into your normal life so much so that you can't trust anyone and kill your family and friends. Like even having a successful trip, the guy would never be able to live a normal life ever again. It's not like the other vacations were going to do that and make sure he was super confused if he was actually a playboy millionaire or if this was just a dream. The trip would be just as interesting and far more enjoyable if he knew it was just part of the dream. And the technicians even say, when Arnold isn't around, that they never implanted it.
