while the first was a better movie overall, 2 was a great creature feature muppet movie. People give 2 shit because it "sold out" and became much more kid friendly than the first film but what were they gonna make TMNT2 a super gritty rated R film at the peak of early 90s turtles mania? There's a few jokes and references you only get as an adult as well.
3 was absolutely shit, wall to wall floor to ceiling shit. No idea what sort of movie making politics was going on that TMNT 3 had the look and budget of a Hercules or Xena TV episode. I don't mind a cheesy Xena episode with cheap production value, but I do mid it when it's the 2nd sequel of one of the largest media franchises of all time. Could have been this perfect trilogy instead of this shameful secret no one talks about.
Robocop 3 happened the same year. Two great franchises fizzling out. Not with a bang but with a whimper. Down the toilet and didn't even have the courtesy to stain the bowl on the way out.

but after revisiting 1 a couple years back it really is leagues above the sequels

I thought it looked horrible even when I was 10 and never saw it. By 1993 I was over TMNT anyway so it didnt matter.

As others have said, yes, it was really that bad. 2 is decent, but 1 is what I want from a Turtles movie. Verification not required.
Only thing I didn't like was the villain, I wanted Shredders ancestor or something else.
